  1. I think the instructor usually provides the suit for the course, and if you do it at z-hills then there is a huge chance that it will be a wicked wingsuit you use. Think Robert Harris is offering the course there now. Any instructor who doesn't have suits is an instructor you'll want to avoid. That said, we've had a few students show up here with Wicked Wingsuit rentals for post-FFC training, and most of them have been quite pleased. All the suits I've seen come through here have been in good repair. The *only* issue I've seen with the suits is a couple that have been poorly sized, and in one case two years ago, created severe problems for the student (he put 3" foam blocks in the toes to shorten the suit).
  2. Only for a demo, but never in real use. I use a Droid for pre-viz, and it's very good for what it's for.
  3. http://billboyheritagesurvey.wordpress.com/2012/01/25/never-mind-the-width-feel-the-quality-de-fish-in-lightroom/ Has a tutorial for the lens profile. Once you know how to choose a preset for the lens, the rest is pretty easy.
  4. One interpretation is Low Skill/Big Suit. A couple of other people have come up with their own version of the acronym.
  5. Thought you didn't want this out there? I've shared it with the instructors here. It's gonna get out. There are a few issues in that jump, but the first link is that you're in a suit beyond your currency, skills, and knowledge (as discussed last month in the General forum) It's just another LSBS story, and that particular story has helped a lot of people meet the reaper this year. Very glad you learned from it, and hope others do too. That said, what is a really bad experience in your mind...happens to a lot of people. Sad thing is that there is an entire culture that feels that emergency/instability procedures don't need to be taught to new wingsuiters. Had you received proper instruction/direction/coaching or made the phone call...this wouldn't have occurred in the first place. Thanks again for making the vid, thanks for sharing.
  6. Chicks Rock! Literally. Andreea Olea, Shellie Anderson, Cate Heneghan, and Kristina Keifer set the first Docked Wingsuit records in USPA history. In one jump, they achieved: -National Docked Record -National Women's Docked Record -State Docked Record -State Docked Women's Record and just to round out the weekend score, they took off the wings and participated in the WSCR record (Women's Star Crest). Very sweet achievements; congrats, ladies! See the video: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201467787989937
  7. Congrats to you! I don't smoke, but am a big supporter (and appreciative) of e-cigs.
  8. Imagine how excited you'll be when your name appears in the magazine for the first time...
  9. Sure you can. Whether it's useful for a landing or not is another topic. I predict we'll see a real occurrence of this in the coming year.
  10. Elsinore has a van onsite at all times (parked in the landing/packing area) and the packers/staff will drive to pick up anyone beyond the tetrahedron. I've picked up many a jumper. There is also a full-time driver for the van on Fri-Sun. AFAIK, everyone here uses a camera on AFF jumps. Some are mudflap mounted, some are helmet mounted, but everyone wears them.
  11. Or they'll use something from one of their competitors. Samsung has some terrific tech they announced at CES last year, that is well-forward of what Ambarella has available (albeit at a much higher cost).
  12. RiggerRob, don't expect USPA to address "angle dives" at all. Despite full-time, working in the sport pros like Brian Burke advocating for standardized training, USPA was scared off by a small but very vocal threat. "Doing the right thing" frequently is not on their agenda. Brian's article is spot-on, and addresses what many larger DZ's have already implemented regarding horizontal flight group control. We had two fatalities this past year, entirely related to poor planning and implementation of horizontal flight groups. Let's hope it ends via greater awareness and practices.
  13. to add to what Chris said, use a laundry bag to wash it in (big netted bag)
  14. This is only true in a separated area, divided away from the student and main landing areas, so it's a bit of a stretch to say that "they allow big turns." Generally speaking, those making big swoops are also on hop n' pops. That said, since the swoop pond was covered, big turns have pretty well gone away. The same can be said for Perris (or any other DZ that no longer offers a pond). Elsinore has full-time Load Organizers as well. Both DZ's are very good DZ's, and if one was to look for faults vs benefits, any DZ can be found wanting.
  15. My guess is Elsinore, around 1975. Who? No clue. However, there is a photo that used to be on the wall of the old cafe' that has someone looking very similar to the driver in this pic.
  16. Elsinore has a very large staff of AFF instructors, loads going all day, every day (running a Caravan and Otter ATM). Perris has a restaurant and a pool, Elsinore has a food wagon and a fountain. Both have large landing areas for students. Elsinore has a more 'friendly' vibe, Perris is a bit more 'head-down, focus on the team skydive' vibe. Both places are great, and you can't go wrong with either one, IMO.
  17. I believe that it is a new waterproof casing that is smaller. Very tight fit. Yes, it's the housing that's smaller (20% overall smaller package) but the "naked" camera is the same body. it's great the camera is staying the same for this gen.
  18. Hi DSE, is this referring to the original Drift or all of them (Drift, Drift HD, Drift HD Ghost)? The reason I'm asking is that my 2nd camera is Drift HD and I have not seen a lot of difference compared to materials from 1st or 2nd gen GoPro's. - Petri ~Neither first nor second gen GoPro ever excited me/most professionals. ~Yes, have tested all the Drift's. They didn't like my last two reviews, so have not tested the latest firmware update to the Ghost. The company has terrible tech support in the US anyway, so it's not been worth chasing down. In the production world, bitrate, custom settings, quality compression take the prize, and at the moment, it boils down to the three cameras I mentioned above.
  19. Don't be too surprised if you see something from someone other than Ambarella soon.
  20. In case you haven't signed up for the 2013 Performance Cup competition yet, and are wanting to show how bad ass you are in time/distance/speed, now is the time. https://www.facebook.com/events/606000842756325/ If you're not aware, this year we have separated the wingsuit comp from the tracking comp, so wingsuit comp is on Saturday, tracking comp on Sunday. We've also added a separate division, for ladies only. Ladies scores will be mixed in with the general scoring pool, but will also be separated for their own comp. Cash prizes for the Ladies Cup provided by Simon Repton/Wicked Wingsuits. Sponsors include prizes from Paralog, Phoenix-Fly, Replay Cameras, and Sony.
  21. It's not a bad little camera. Not as rich as a gopro, not as smooth as a Sony AS, it's just "another POV camera in the 14mbps compression range" space. There is a point where either you're getting a decent POV camera such as a GoPro Replay Sony or you're buying one of the many plastic toys with lenses and a low bitrate Swann Ion Pioneer JVC Drift
  22. This. I'm a fan of the Optima because it allows for fine-adjustments that are valuable. Solo only works in 500' increments. Several helmets are available with external-access pockets for the Optima, too. And the kicker is, L&B customer service is simply the benchmark for our sport.
  23. It may have also been further pushed in while crammed into a seat, but wasn't properly checked on the way to the door. It's skydiving, sometimes things happen in spite of our best efforts to see that all goes as it should. If he tried twice and went to his reserve, it seems he did as trained. Does someone have a problem with his actions?
