  1. 16mm is plenty wide (often too wide) for skydiving stills. The 16-55 is perfect for most skydiving work.
  2. From all initial appearances, it's a very nice setup. I won't have one to shoot with til second week of March, but I'm impressed thus far. Caution, if you DO decide to use an adapter, be sure it's a good one. I've twice seen cheap plastic adapters rip off on deployment, costing their owners a lens. Stick with metal adapters, and for the Sony NEX mounts, they're not cheap.

you'll soon see a review on the AX100 in freefall.
  4. It'll frustrate you at first, coming from a real editing application, but the output is very similar, even if twice as slow to achieve. it works, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.
  5. That was my point earlier, Jeff, was that the subject has not given the photographer the right to sell/license the image, and then also offer up evidence that the photographer has indicated he has not sold/licensed the image. According to Lambert, neither did he give permission to the photographer to use the image outside of the specific use (magazine) nor did the photographer grant any license to anyone either. You're the lawyer, I just pretend. However, those two instruments seem to be the best starting point for a conversation with the user of the image, if Lambert is wanting to avoid litigation, no?
  6. Actually, Germany and Israel aren't *all* that different. Both subscribe to WIPO, both are signatories of DCMA, both are signatories of Berne. Stopping them from using the image requires legal action in both countries, and given Lambert's proximity, an exporatory phonecall or email will likely start a productive line of conversation. If anyone is interested in reading the most recent Israeli legislation on copyright, it's a fairly simple read. In the USA, man....could one have some serious fun. Imagine how great it would be if the food chain bought the image from a USA stock house?
  7. iMovie is more like Windows Media Maker than it is like Vegas or FCP. They're all NLE's tho.
  8. Many employers will hire people with a few tattoos but will tell them to cover it up, but in the longer run don"t expect many promotions. Some people will try to fight it by saying it goes against freedom of speech but one must remember that they are representing the company that employs them. Various branches in the military have restrictions on tattoo placements/visibility. Edgy Edgy 2 Edgy 3 If you're trying for "edgy" Gary, you'll likely wanna do something with the hair, unless you wear a set of well-worn but cool leathers and ride in on a well worn, well loved Harley. Watch Sons of Anarchy; Jax is "edgy" but still dresses like a biker.
  9. I'm using the full cloud too, but it's expiring soon. My understanding is that this 'new" lease method uses a combo of keyed access to your account for verification so that the cloud version can't be hacked/piratebay'd. Perhaps I'm not understanding that correctly. I guess I'll find out when my current subscription expires on March 1.
  10. you apparently missed the point in the news article and news broadcasts. The minority against TJ's has _always_ been the minority. They are merely loudmouths that wanted to flex muscle and when TJ's pulled out they now scream "Oh shit, no! We want you here..." Can't blame TJ's for not wanting to deal with the drama. They have a business to run, and if the local community isn't 100% happy about it, move on and build where they are wanted. The lot sat empty for 15 years. If they can't figure it out in 15 years, it's unlikely they're going to figure it out for another 15. What TJ's sells or doesn't sell isn't the conversation. FWIW, they sell competitively priced, high-quality goods at their stores. And yes, they do give back to the community. Research their employee ratings, research how many minorities they intentionally employ, research who they are. http://www.traderjoes.com/stores/neighborhood-involvement.asp Donated 260M$ last year) http://www.forbes.com/sites/glennllopis/2011/09/05/why-trader-joes-stands-out-from-all-the-rest-in-the-grocery-business/ "The Trader Joe's brand is diversity on steriods" http://www.glassdoor.com/Overview/Working-at-Trader-Joe-s-EI_IE5631.11,23.htm A terrific asset to any community, a terrific asset to their industry, and loved by their minority employees (the same sort of local employee's they'd be hiring in the reviving Portland area). I like TJ's enough that I'll drive 125 miles each way to shop.
  11. You know this is my area of specialty... I'm not a lawyer, I just pretend to know a lot about copyright law. And fortunately for you, it's a really, really easy conversation (inside the USA). Israel also is a signatory of Berne and DMCA, so this is a super easy conversation other than the time zones/distance. A-get a written statement from the photog that he didn't license the image. B-Write your own statement that says you haven't granted anyone the right to your image. C-contact the restaurant's exec team and share these two items with them and ask them how they'd like to settle the matter. Altering an image in any way does not dismiss the illlegality. You're referencing derivative works, and in this case, derivations don't apply. They're not building new works built upon portions of the original image. They've using the whole image. Chances are fair they bought the image from a stock house that obtained it illegally, or via the rights you granted another publisher. Either way, it's a fairly simple conversation to have. And in their financial best interests to dismiss it as quickly as possible.
  12. I do run Bootcamp, and as Fletch mentions...it's a powerful option. No Apple-compatible software can touch what you can do with the Sony apps. Not by a far cry when it comes to speed. Otherwise, iMovie, FCPX, and Premiere are your options for budget software. iMovie is pretty powerful, so is Premiere yet Premiere has a steep learning curve. FCPX is quite similar to Sony Vegas, but it's a lot slower due to the number of clicks, menus, and methods.
  13. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/02/trader_joes_decision_to_pull_o.html[url] A less sensationalized, more objective version of the story from someone who was at one of the press conferences. Looks like as in many things, a small yet loud minority hosed the majority and TJ's didn't want any part of it. FWIW, there is a TJ's in the midst of a Buffalo, NY area that is fairly poor; the community seems to feel it's good for them (and I've been driving over the border to buy food there, seeing it first-hand).
  14. I couldn't get any info regarding post-signup costs from them either. I can't imagine it would be huge. This is Adobe's next step towards reducing piracy of their product. I've signed up, but haven't tried running it offline yet.
  15. I don't use the NEX for stills. Been meaning to get a custom switch built, Trunk had mentioned he's done it successfully. I'm only using it for video.

  17. Interesting. I've observed several physical altercations, although never been involved in one. Guys pissed off over girls, guys angry at other guys, tandem instructors peeved at another guy for cutting them, off...etc. I'd submit that skydivers like whuffos, are people no different than their counterparts in the world. I've personally observed one skydiver taking it upon themselves to try to cost another skydiver his civilian job. A military instructor also got tweaked at another instructor and indeed did cost the other man his slot in a prestigious assignment. People are people regardless of what they do for fun. I'd submit participants in skydiving can be just as wonderful or just as nasty as anyone else in any other leisurely pursuit. Being a skydiver doesn't offer immunity from social woes that other groups may experience.
  18. I use an NEX5 in freefall (for some video). I use a 7D or a 60D for stills. hard to beat the NEX or the new Samsungs for quality/price/speed. I like the Sony because of the lens options, and because I can adapt almost anything to it.
  19. Sounds like I owe you an apology, Chris. When you'd admitted you only had a few skydives and that most of your skydiving knowledge comes from the internet, and given that the accuracy of your advice is dubious at best, I assumed that meant you're no longer skydiving. Please forgive my assumption. Why does it matter if the OP asked for instruction or not? The OP is wanting to get as many jumps as possible to become a camera flyer. Solo jumps won't help the OP's skills leading to becoming a camera flyer. Flying relative to another skydiver however, _is_ beneficial, and is the only path to flying camera with tandems or other skydivers. It is impossible to know if one is backsliding, sidesliding, or driving across the sky without a relative target, right?
  20. To point a loaded firearm at a police officer is "stupid" in my opinion, and the outcome of that situation is likely less deadly than the image you're suggesting is safe. It seems you're not aware of the potential issues here (that have killed others in the past in similar circumstances). Proximity flying may seem stupid to you, but it doesn't put a minimum of three people at risk. Proximity is a solo endeavor and not relevant to this conversation in any way.
  21. http://rivernewsherald.org/lodi-skydiving_6-29-2011.html I'm only commenting on the fact that he has successfully navigated a lot of turmoil, stiff competition from many other drop zones, and continues to run a successful dz that a lot of people enjoy going to. Bill did that with hard work. What have you done? The parachute center continues to put more aircraft and more loads in the air than any other dz in the area! There is a huge selection of student gear. He is on the record many times and in many videos that he leaves the teaching to others, if you want to continue to defame the character of one of the hardest working guys in the business that's your business. If you want to help Chelsea out, that's your choice as well. But you can either help, or not, that's your choice??? C You speak with the tone of someone who knows Bill. Since you don't skydive, I'd wager you've never met Bill let alone visited Lodi. I *do* know Bill, and I'd also wager he wouldn't give you the time of day. Bill doesn't take kindly to bullshit. To the OP; Lodi is an option if you know what you're getting into. It's not as scary as some say it is, it's scarier than others think it's not. There are some issues there, but I jump there occasionally and enjoy it. People that start there as students are not the same sort as people that start elsewhere and then visit Lodi. Find a local mentor there, and that will help you navigate the waters much more easily. Go with a plan. Go with a goal of having some identifiable, specific skills when you leave. Jumping by yourself simply because the slots are cheap do no one, especially yourself, any good. You won't be better, smarter, safer; you'll merely have more exits and landings with a few minor knowledge gains as a part of the process. Seriously, identify what you'll leave Lodi (or any other DZ) knowing after you've invested the time/$$ into the effort. If you do this, it really doesn't matter much where you jump.
  22. Wingsuiters are typically able to fly near the traffic pattern, and with bigger suits becoming the norm, this possibility becomes "normal." Our pilot noses the aircraft down while flaps are down and power reduced so that the prop wash isn't as much the problem as it could be. In other words, the tail is high, speed is slow, and everyone is happy. Wingsuits don't care much about maintaining altitude when climbing out.
  23. I've had non-air time with all of them. The 330 seems to be the most applicable/price point friendly. The wider lens is awesome, and works well without a lens adaptor (on the head of a good flyer).
  24. My curiosity was to find a best practice DZ and understand what sets them apart. And like you mentioned, there must be a small dz out there might have something cool running at their place, so I am hoping people will start bragging about it ;) I have not seen a lot of DZ's but I agree that Skydive Dubai's video dept is top in terms of gear and content output. Having a dedicated video department, full-time editors, top non linear systems puts them "above the rest". Tough having all the bells and whistles does not necessarily make you the best in the game. I think you meant "though having...."? This is true, however a DZ that has these things bought them in anticipation of significant recoupment revenue. Elsinore has full-time video staff, top non-linear as well, not to mention my personal Avid system parked there for the past two years. "If you build it (in the right area) they will come." Pope has done a great job building the program at Dubai. I'd like to think I've done the same at Elsinore. And again, I'm sure there are a couple small DZ's out there with great capabilities, but they're probably based around the personal gear of local professionals. For example, there is a guy with a RED and a supercharged AVID system at a very small dropzone in the Mountain Region. He's also a multi-Emmy winning editor/compositor.
  25. Yes, the bitrate is the same between the two models, yet the codec is not. The codec is the _most_ important aspect when talking about compression/bitrate. The codec is how (for example) GoPro claims "up to 45Mbps." They're using Cineform's codec to make that happen.
