  1. What she said... HDV works great. AVCHD works great. If speed is your need, lose the Mac. If you just want to be able to import vid....Any cam that reads on a PC works fine on a Mac. If it's an MPEG-based format (most are these days) then you'll be converting to another format. That's the price of using Apple. CX100-very common GoProHD-going to be extremely common HC5-quite common HC3-quite common these are all HD cameras. SD cameras (for the most part) are DV, and DV can be imported to Apple as a DV.mov file, which requires no conversion.
  2. Not to mention the broken-down Volva you had in there. Great headlights on that thing bro! I was really surprised to see you and Rick driving it. My gut still aches.
  3. I'd be happy to. Just gotta get my .55 back from a friend who borrowed it.
  4. It's twice the width of whatever your camera's widest point is. It's plenty wide for most uses. Michal, Chris, and (I forget who) borrowed this lens from me during the wingsuit event, maybe they can post some video. I did some jumps with it yesterday, shooting a multiple wingsuit rodeo. Haven't jumped a tandem with it yet, but it will likely become my default.
  5. well officially they had the 26th of oct as a cut off date which was originally in the FAQ.. They then decided to postpone that since they didn't have over 70 people, and people like my self weren't yet sure we'd be able to make it. People were still beingqualified up until friday before the event. Please don't confuse people with facts. It gets in the way of their "reality."
  6. The smartest thing for the organizers to do was put PM in the lead. When they did, it was immediately obvious, as the formation came together quickly and cleanly. Say what you will, but there aren't very many people in the world that can fly a base as clean and consistently as PM.
  7. I have a mix of most of these... The ProSG cards are faster; but can't say I notice a WHOPPING difference. Never have tried to time them. SG cards allegedly provide 30Mbps read/write Non-SG provide 18Mbps read/write. In some cases in the USA, Sandisk markets the same cards with different names ie; I believe the Video HD card is the same as the UltraII ProHG. Pretty confusing, eh?
  8. Lurch was just trying to be ahead of the H1N1 scare. This year, he couldn't fit it in his Dufflevilla.
  9. True, very true. I'm sure that when the critics make the effort to put on a big-way event everything will be perfect. Umm....where has the effort been criticized?t. No-one said the effort was criticized. Re-read what I wrote. If someone has a personal issue with one or more of the organizers, maybe they should just stay away and organize their own event. Can you say that with a straight face? I can't think of a single effort in any sport, business, or other activity where personal issues weren't at least somewhat present. I disagree with the grid. I disagree with the negligence that contributed to the Sebastian fatality. So does most of this community. But I put any personal issues aside, and I was here. I am here. I support wingsuiting. Period. I don't like you at all. I find you to be exactly what the gang in Chicago described. But I wanted to fly with you anyway. In other words, I put aside my personal issues. We all have personal issues. Just that some of us are mature and capable of putting them aside for the betterment of the community, the sport, and achieving something great. Believe it or not, that's what "adults" do.
  10. I have, and often do, work for MTV. If you want to use copyrighted works, MTV doesn't own them for the most part. Nothing has been "done" with the videos. They're archived as they were created. Copyright prevents anything from being done to them. You can request access to any vid ever seen on MTV through www.loc.gov. The vids are owned by the artist, label, or production company that produced the video; sometimes owned by any mix of the above. As Quade said, the MTV "type" of edit (whatever that is) doesn't generally fit into anything outside of music video. If you're referring to an ADD edit, that works, but the new Discovery is more your model. Fast cuts, lots of angles, lots of B roll, and lots of $$. Look at the social shows being targeted at your same market; they'll give you the best sense of what is happening in that group.
  11. I'm in Elsinore, and have plenty of suits if someone wants to demo or do an FFC. Would love to jump with you.
  12. True, very true. I'm sure that when the critics make the effort to put on a big-way event everything will be perfect. Umm....where has the effort been criticized? I support and will support Scott Callantine, Justin Shorb, Ed Pawlowski, Phil Peggs in any and everything they do. Anything they've undertaken in the past, I've been amongst the first to register, first to be there with video equipment, support, and helping vs hindering in any way possible. This would include paying for hotel rooms for others, airfares for organizers, food for the group, etc. I admire the hell out of most of these guys. I'm really, really impressed with this event's outcome. Were it not for Ed's expertise on large formations, Callantine's excellent capabilities at communicating, Shorb's ability to keep things on an even keel, then this event wouldn't have come off like it did. One of the organizers pointed out that communications were actually worse this year with the group, and I'd concur with that, but the communication once here, was pretty damn solid. Eli Bolotin was a huge asset to the formation and we didn't have an "Eli" last year. My friends did an incredible job, and when I say "my friends," I'm also referring to most of the organizers. I'm really proud of my friends that were in this formation. I'm very happy for them to have their names on a USPA record. They've earned it.
  13. A pc mic can be used provided; -it is pointed at the side rear of the mouth not more than 3" away. -it has a windscreen (you can make your own with a wad of silk. Do NOT use foam) -you have something with which to isolate the mic from the desktop. A washcloth, doubled up Tshirt, etc will work fine. Experiment a little, you'll find the best point. Then again, it might be that you're not after a "movie voice" but rather just a voice on a DVD that sounds just like you. A DV camera mic works very well, BTW. Done it many times in hotel rooms.
  14. Mine uses industrial strength velcro and a thin bungy.
  15. Steve was a tremendous human being. He was a great flyer. but more than that, he was a great human being. We had quite a few conversations this week, and every one of them left me smiling. He had a very quick wit and unique sense of humor. Fly free, Steve. A huge hole is left in the sky with your passing.
  16. The registration FAQ made it abundantly clear that advance payment was required, as was endorsement from a captain. No provision was made for walk-ons. The registration letter is available for all, I posted a copy of part of it in the wingsuit forum. I wasn't able to qualify during the summer (being in ICU and a rehab hospital for three months sorta keeps one from flying). Everyone, including most of the captains knew I wouldn't be qualifying until the captains reached Elsinore. I didn't want to register until I'd been qualified because I didn't want to donate 150.00 of nonrefundable money to the "charity." Here is the registration letter sent to every participant. What is "abundantly clear" is that: A-funds are due on acceptance B-Registration is open til 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 7. The bold is emphasized by the organizers, not me. (BOLD="abundantly clear" to most) My flying skills were "accepted" at sunset on Friday, November 6 and both captains told me to register in the morning. Apparently they weren't aware of a change in registration policy either. The head of the event said that the word 'registration' was a misfortunate use of the word." In other words, "we admit an error." I wasn't a "walk-on." I was on the DZ two weeks before the event, the organizers saw me and spoke with me nearly each day of the four days they were here before the event. Were the excuse one of "we don't think you're physically capable".... that would have been one thing. FWIW, I was/am capable and have been flying my wingsuit for the last two weeks in flocks and with students. Folks here aren't stupid, read the registration letter and decide for yourself. Frankly, none of it means anything further to me at this point. I lost a dear friend yesterday, and the record, much like last year, is empty. The FAI rules and the ridiculous grid system don't matter. Steve flew his heart out, had a huge smile and a handshake at the end of each jump, and I'd just as soon remember his presence and words only moments before his fateful exit. Really...that's all that matters at this point. A good friend from our community is now gone. All the bullshit politics about registration, the grid, the poor organization/communication, safety issues...none of it matters anymore. A good friend is gone.
  17. If more skydivers were like Mike, our sport would be significantly more popular, we'd all be healthier, and the plane would require a gallon of Ozium for each jump. Mike is truly a man among men. And he takes pretty good photos, too.
  18. Just for sake of clarification, I'm not "in" the formation. There was a misunderstanding about registration. Based on the letter I received about the event, I was under the impression I could register til Saturday (see attached). As Taya, Jeff, and one other organizer put it, it was a "misfortunate use of the word" and registration had actually ended two days previously. In this case, "registration meant "check in." Therefore, I have not allowed to be part of the formations.
  19. Many happy returns on this day. Loved the photo of Rickster in this month's Parachutist.
  20. here is the formation from this morning.
  21. Sparky is pretty astute, no doubt. Following his advice served me well in the early days.... OP; I've got a Sabre 2 that has never given me issues, ever. Openings are great, even with 10lbs of gear on my head and opening in a full track with lots of nylon between my arms and legs. Although all canopies seem to have issues of one kind or another, most of the complaints like this relate to the jumper, not the canopy. I had one that just vexed me. I finally had someone shoot video of a deployment. Figured it out in one, it was all me.
  22. Let's clarify this... Yes, there is a person who was "qualified" for the record on their second WX jump. However...the caveat there is that the person in question is a multi-time world champion in both FS and VFS with thousands of jumps. This person did exceptionally well in the videos I've seen, outside of sinking out from time to time. This person has one of the best wingsuit pilots in the world as their coach, and they did several coach jumps prior to the actual record prep/formation jumps. And...this person wasn't on the four-plane builds.
  23. It's gonna vary, and it's important to be aware that a re-do on a jump isn't always a "fail" but rather "you did OK but I'd like to see you do better so that on the next jump you're coming from a stronger ability." One person I'm aware of had 33 AFF jumps. Could have had his A license before getting off Student Status.
  24. As I mentioned in my OP, I'm of this same mind. In this particular scenario, even after asking the student a direct question about the skydive, the young man was quiet for a moment, then started giving her advice on the way up. It was clear he wanted her number and name. I nudged him with my knee, and he got the hint. In the same vein, I've had wingsuit students terribly distracted by others chatting them up, and although wingsuit students are experienced skydivers, had an interesting experience with a student that had nearly 10K skydives. Another wingsuiter started chatting him up, I asked my WX student a question to hint to the other guy "be quiet, we're working here," and when the other guy didn't stop, my student told him "please let me concentrate on what I'm doing, OK?" The person I was teaching is an AFFI/E, and it was nice to see this attitude.
  25. Nice. The sunset jump is SRGB on the top end and computer RGB on the top end, or appears to be, based on laptop scopes and the latitude in the shot. Very interesting. Never seen that done intentionally before, but if that's their intent, it's pretty smart.
