  1. That is NOT "Wingsuit Freefly." It is "Atmo-wingie" and I'm damn proud to have invented it. That shot was on my 5-6th wingsuit jump in John's Firebird, shortly before I bought my Blade from LouDiamond.
  2. You believe that this blow switch will last forever and ever?
  3. Searching the forum can be productive.
  4. It appears to be the same person who posted an ad on my wall as well.
  5. Coupla more. I like gainers, diving exits not so much. Turn n' fly, especially on high speed passes are fun. Here are two shots of Scott Callantine on exit.
  6. Cya tomorrow. Looking forward to the (probably very brief) discussion on the Coach Rating/AFF/TI rating changes.
  7. Terrorists win. Sheeple accept most of what the TSA does in the name of "security." Seems it's significantly easier to be struck by lightning in the USA than to suffer from a terrorist on an aircraft.
  8. Most cameras display (on tv) at 1920x1080, but actually store the information at 1440x1080 (non square). (DSE correct me if Im wrong) CX100/105 can (at Uber-HQ mode) store the information at 1920x1080. But Im not sure what the resolution is that the images is capturing? The highest quality/bitrate aside, in all other modes it shoots 1440x1080. When editing, hardly anyone notices the difference though...so for most, not a thing to worry about.. Pre-sets and 'Wizards' have taken the fun out of that subject You're pretty close on the above, Jarno. *most* HD cams store at a size different than the display size, but the CX100/105 store (in all HD modes) at 1920 x 1080 pixels. Before everyone gets excited tho, full rez storage from a 1/5 imager is very different than full rez storage from say...a .5 or .66 imager. It's also why low light is a challenge for all the small HD cameras. NONE of them have great low light. Displays see the incoming signal and upconvert to full raster images. Panasonic is the king of fudging pixels, as they are the only company that fudges with both vertical AND horizontal resolution, while Sony, Canon, Grass Valley, Ikegami, JVC only mess with horizontal resolution (if any fudging is being done). Broadcast HD is *usually* 1440 x 1080, but in some areas of the world, it's only 1280 x 720 (which is always square pixels). Didn't mean to write a novella, and trying really hard to avoid the techno-speak that seems to piss a few people off.
  9. I've asked. That's about all one can do.

just covering my own ass in the event that someone from the film festival associates my company with the filmmakers comment of "worked with at the Sundance Film Festival."
  11. Sensors may (often do) have non-square pixel resolutions, but the real rub is in the storage. For example...Canon HDV camcorders have full resolution/square pixel imagers/sensors, but record the media at 1440x1080. Why? To save bandwidth. By using non-square pixels (as does the world-standard HD production format known as HDCAM), bandwidth is reduced by 25% out of the gate. More bandwidth=less compression for equal image quality. Make sense? Here's the secret to working with non-square pixels if you don't wanna know the math for uploads. Always set your project settings in your NLE to display square pixels and not compensate for PAR. or...read my tutorial on uploading. Work at: 1280 x 720, 864x486, 640x360, 480x270, and 320x180 and you'll be happy (assuming you're uploading widescreen. Please put a quarter in your CD tray and email it to me. I'm expensive when it comes to sharing knowledge. Matt, it's easy to say "get a square imager/full resolution camera," but that won't solve Yuri's issue if he's uploading anything but 1920 x 1080, and even then, Flash encoders can screw it up (but they usually don't). Frankly, I prefer 1440 x 1080 when dealing with identical bandwidth. The move to 1920 x 1080 imagers for AVC was purely a marketing move, and no one really sees benefit unless the bandwidth is cranked up to 24Mbps, and even then...1440x1080 is gonna be a delivery standard for many, many years to come.

Al Gore beat you to it. The article isn't entirely accurate about a few things, but there is a lot of enthusiasm for the project John is doing, so we'll likely see more media coverage over the next few months.
  13. Buy my book "The Full HD" and I explain it in great detail. Umm....MOST HD broadcast isn't square pixels, MOST camcorders do not capture square pixels. All of the web is square pixels. MOST of the people posting video to the web are clueless about PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio). Thank god there are still professionals left in the video biz who actually get it, know how to deal with it, and can post it accurately. Unfortunately, Apple devices really f**k this for the rest of the world, which is why most morons post the wrong PAR. .909, .85, then you start tossing in SAR on top of PAR, especially DV acquired at 4:3 SAR and output as 16:9, and you get a helluva mess. Keep asking, Yuri. I hear a cha-ching with every question. BTW, the problem with pixels isn't the media, it's the operator.
  14. Andreea, thanks for the push to do some linkage at PR. Very cool stuff. Great pix, Jeff!

An interesting, if not entirely accurate article. http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2010/02/14/news/doc4b761b2c0f21c665778202.txt
  16. Like it or not, expirations are part of many business offerings. In many cases, it must be so. Representations and warranties could become a clusterfu** when buying or selling a business, property, or other tangible. If you don't agree, what *is* reasonable? What if you bought a DZ to only later discover that the DZ had 5K in outstanding certificates? You really think you're gonna recover that from the previous owner if he failed to let you know about the outstanding liabilities in his P/L statements?
  17. Probably in the same column as "I don't care how long and how many clicks it takes to get it done, looking cool is more important." Seriously. There is a reason that most of the heavy-duty stock animationware, rendering engines, etc are on PC, and there is a reason that a huge volume of the computing horsepower at Pixar is PC-based. Skittles, I'd agree with overclocking, or at the least, waiting if you don't need it *right now.*
  18. What wasn't average was that the Canadians recognized First Nations in a very honorable manner, and gave them due respect.
  19. Two true and recent stories related to GoPro; 1-Person with approx 80 jumps decides they can handle the camera. On the ride to altitude, a very experienced camera flyer asks newbie "What you gonna do if it snags?" Newbie is befuddled. He explains to newbie that cameras are a serious distraction, and if newbie hasn't even thought about snags, then sure as hell newbie hasn't thought about the distraction factor. Newbie shines the experienced person on, and jumps with it anyway. Then newbie explains on the ground that they forgot to put their goggles on "not because of the camera but because they were in a hurry to get out." Duh. 'Nother newbie slaps a Contour on (just slightly larger than GoPro in length, smaller in profile). Newbie does jump with another newbie. Both have less than 100 jumps. Both wonder how they got below 2K before they deployed. Both have A licenses, meaning they should be opening 1500' higher. Both were shaken up. Both denied the camera had anything to do with their "oops" moment. Both of these incidents occurred in the past 30 days. I'm sure there are many other stories like these, and we're just not yet hearing them. I wonder how long it's gonna take before a "just gonna turn it on and shoot the sky" lowtime jumper hurts themselves or someone else. I hope it's a long, long time. Please, get the experience and muscle memory before you toss any kind of camera on your head. Please?
  20. Vegas; Add Generated Media, track motion to place it in the corner. Looking to kill a logo or timestamp? Virtual Dub has a plugin that will do a reasonable job on timestamps, but it won't remove a logo/watermark.
  21. I agree. Recruitment videos tug at the heartstrings and many of them offend me just as much as the bullshit PETA ads featuring Sarah Mclachan's music, showing cute kitties and puppies that are going to die because there aren't owners. I have no problem with recruitment pieces that are like this one, I feel military service is a selfless act (for most) and I honor and respect the hell out of our armed services. If people choose to make that their way of serving others, more power to them. I might not agree with the politics that drive the military to do what it does, but the soldiers aren't responsible for those decisions. Without soldiers following orders, there would be no order. In the case of this video, I'm exceptionally impressed with the 13 year old that wrote the music and concepted the video piece. For me, this one isn't a question of politics. It's just an inspiring work by a couple of teenagers. Were it not military-related, I'd have posted it in Bonfire, simply because it's a nice piece, from an unexpected source.
  22. The person that sent it to me was one of the people who worked on it. His comment was that they were "mostly amateur." The director and principle photographer were not Guard, so they had enough budget to bring in hired guns, so that makes a big difference. If you watch the "Making of" piece, it's shot with low end cameras and a pro-sumer grade steadicam, coupled with HDV. Gear doesn't dictate quality, but it supports what the editor tells me.
  23. The Price of Peace is an moving music video produced by a bunch of mostly amateurs in the National Guard. The songwriter/performer is a 13 year old girl. Regardless of which side of the political spectrum on which you fall, it's worth watching, IMO.
  24. Jack be nimble Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick. Jack weren't nimble and Jack weren't quick. Now Jack has a french-fried di** #### Old mother hubbard went to the cupboard to get dear Rover a bone. When she bent over dear Rover took over and gave her a bone of his own... George Carlin was a funny guy.
  25. There is a lot of fun jumping that occurs there. Both DZs are great for fun jumping (they share a landing area), although I personally prefer Skydive Hawaii. While it *is* a tandem factory, they also take pains to accomodate fun jumpers and will make you feel welcome the moment you step onto the deck. Be aware, you don't show up at 1:00 in the afternoon and expect to jump all day. Show up early and expect to jump until early afternoon til the trades pop in.
