  1. can you park in front of someone that is falling straight down, no movement, without moving yourself, ie; "fat, dumb, happy." Can you put your face into theirs and not move from that place? This, IMO, is an essential skill for shooting tandems, and it's a skill that isn't developed by learning to sitfly at jump 25 and then screwing around with freeflying until one reaches the "age" of flying a camera. It takes a lot of belly time to be able to fly "fat, dumb, happy."
  2. Stay outdoors. Then there is no problem.:-)
  3. Air time. Practice. This is how you assure the confidence. What aircraft are you jumping from? This may make a difference. For example, if you're rear-floating a larger door, track "up the hill" as you leave the aircraft to stay close to the tandem. IMO, the BEST way to learn to fly with tandems is to be sure you have the ability to fly no-contact RW. Take friends out, fly as close as you can without touching. Learn to be in their face and back off very fast from the exit. I wouldn't consider jumping with tandems til you have this skill. Can you fly a column of air in a fat/dumb/happy slot? If not, learn to.
  4. Lighting flickers at 50Hz while the camera is timed for 60Hz. There is a flicker/pulse that occurs when shooting in most indoor lighting situations. Some folks don't mind it, others are driven crazy over it, and the flicker/pulse is suspected as a trigger for photosensitive epileptics.
  5. Still haven't received mine, but at least now I understand the context. Congrats for being published (again), JD!
  6. Only 30? You'd be surprised what's hiding out around this place. The flag jump here was done with the Silhouette 190, and this canopy is too small for my weight and the weight of the two flags (two small for the bigger flag alone). This is why I suggest considering larger (you weigh more than me, I think).
  7. Damn, does it EVER!! Saw a guy do a BAD ASS swoop and blindman on a Velo into a rodeo arena. The best part was when he hit the chutes on the end.
  8. In the event you're using a computer, then PAL/NTSC don't matter at all in outdoor environments, only indoor environments. So..shoot away, then set your software to output PAL or NTSC. Vegas, Premiere, Canopus, Avid...all can convert on the fly.
  9. Ouch, surely that's just a spoof...?!? if it is, it's a good one. If it's not, it's not terribly different than some of the stuff we see here on a semi-regular basis. The other day, had a dude that had joined three of the GoPro arms together to create a looong arm. he also had it tethered. Plus a contour, also tethered. Plus metal screws holding on the GP, because of "the extra torque of the arm." There have been several of the "boom" arms that have shown up recently. So this...is no surprise.
  10. Mike, I love my Navigator and monster Silhouette for the flag jumps/demos. Ask Lob to take the 260 sometime or borrow my 240. Airtwardo and Sparky have given me some really helpful tips/guidance. Go bigger than you'd think, IMO.
  11. well...at least he's not here on DZ.com pontificating on why it's not a big snag problem, opposite side of deployment, etc. And you know what? He'll probably be just fine jumping it for a long while. It's not the ones you get away with that make it a bad day...
  12. Didn't take long for the Cineform word to get out, did it!? Folks will love the Cineform compression, and it spells some good futures for GoPro. GoPro is next to the VASST booth at NAB this week, so I'll see what info I can drag out of them. We've been users of Cineform for years; it's one of the best compressions available. In 3D, this is critical; keeping a good image while keeping file size down.
  13. That suck! Was really looking forward to seeing you there. Had a kind of unique practical I wante dto share with you.
  14. do you use a computer or hardware/linear editing to create DVDs?
  15. Their new plastic sleeve mount is super nice, and no way will it go anywhere. It can even be sewn to a jumpsuit sleeve or leg.
  16. It really is, isn't it? Super easy to pull 3 min flights without arm fatigue too. Flying into a 30kts headwind last night, got much more distance than I can get in my Ghost 2.
  17. I honestly don't know that a shorted cable would fill the card vs generating an error. I do know that counterfeit/cheap cards can create problems; I observed this happening only yesterday.
  18. I don't doubt he did. I also don't doubt that the staff (and majority of peeps that jump at Elsinore don't do HP setups or downwind landings in the main landing area. That's what the swoop pond and area surrounding the swoop pond are for. It's also why I've put up several blades near the pond. And if you did downwind the landing in the main landing area as FMD, you can expect to get a talking to (the first time). The second time might not be so soft (and it's been that way since I arrived here a couple years ago). More to the point, I do not ascribe to FMD in general terms. Yes, winds shift, but not *that* often. We both know the winds generally change twice a day, and those who have been on organized WS loads with me usually hear "we'll be landing towards the lake (or the buildings) but be sure to check the blades." It's also why I've asked wingsuits at Elsinore to land at the swoop pond, simply to manage traffic around tandems (this is a courtesy request, not a policy). Landing direction CAN be managed responsibly. I'm not saying that Perris doesn't; I'm saying I've had my own experiences there that left a long-lasting impression (whether it's appropriate or not). Have I seen downwind landings in the main landing area at Elsinore and most every other DZ? Of course. And consequently observed one of the S&TA's or instructors having a conversation with that person immediately after. I've never seen multiple jumpers addressed with "you guys should have taken one for the team." My point of "FMD implies a responsibility" is the one I'd hope folks take away from my post. If you're going to land downwind, either announce it in advance and/or land in a high performance area. If the DZ doesn't have an HP area, then take your own pass. If the DZ doesn't provide a separate pass, then find another DZ that does.
  19. you're sure of the cards you're using? What other consistencies are there between the two setups?
  20. I choose to not jump at this DZ predominantly due to FMD. A few years back, FMD downwinded it on the grass (and ended up biffing onto his face). I didn't fully understand the rule and landed into the wind just east of the grass. Got a talking to and told I needed to learn to "take one for the team." While I understand the point of FMD, it also sets up At bigger DZ's, I feel FMD implies responsibility on the part of the FMD. Saying "take one for the team" to 22 other people on the load is not appropriate, IMO. Particularly when the FMD is a hot-shit canopy pilot in addition to being an AFFI, tandem vidiot, training for comp, etc. and is ending their work jump with a 270 or 360 (or bigger) in the middle of traffic. For all the crap Lodi takes for being a non-USPA dropzone, the place at the least has a great safety record with regard to collisions and low turns.
  21. Camera settings? Cable malfunction? Error message?
  22. track and project property settings?
  23. You're welcome to contact Chris Gay and express your opinions. Chris and members of his team created the topics and information.
  24. Canopy Control Excerpt 3 Canopy Control Excerpt 2 Canopy Control Excerpt 1 Available from most any bigger gear store. Chris Gay does a great job, IMO. Yes...I'm biased in favor of them.
