  1. That's pretty fucking horrible. But I'm laughing hysterically over here. I'm definitely going to hell. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  2. Forcast of golf ball sized hail? Actually, I'm distinctly worried about that. I keep taunting her, and she's probably going to test me harder and harder each and every time. Although maybe it's a sign that I really am supposed to be a rescue swimmer. If shitty weather can't stop me, and pain/discomfort can't, then that only leaves death. Maybe I'm about to reach my final realization about becoming a rescue swimmer. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  3. Just completed 300 arm haulers and 300 situps. That's enough for today. Tomorrow it's a swim, then a few hours of work, then I go to MEPS to check in, and get my last remaining medical issues out of the way Tuesday. 4. Ran another 3 miles at an 8 min/mile pace again, still reconditioning. I give it another week or so before I'm able to break that 24 minute mark convincingly. Funny story though. Exactly a week ago, last Sunday 12/2, I ran my 3 miles in a blinding snowstorm. Upon finishing, I taunted Mother Nature with, "You're going to have to try harder than that to get me down." Well, apparently she's been taking it seriously. It's been freezing the last few runs, and the one I did on Thursday it was about 22 degrees minus whatever wind there was. Still survived the run, and felt pretty good about it. Well, today she really took the taunting to heart, and slapped me with sleet. Interestingly enough, the sleet stopped altogether just before I finished the run. It was strange, almost as if Mother Nature called it quits because she knew she wasn't getting to me. Now I feel like she's going to hit me with something far worse the next time. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  5. Updating what I said earlier, I did 300 situps tonight in addition to my swim. Tomorrow I'm going to run, probably not in the pre-dawn hours unless I'm not hungover. And I'm going to do more flutterkicks, because they definitely helped my fin swimming. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  6. One more small update to make, since the new thread is not yet available. Swam Friday morning, finally figured out how not to choke off my oxygen when using the snorkel, so I flew through my 500m with the snorkel on. Did it in something like 7:10. More kick development and anaerobic conditioning, and did 300 pushups when I got home from work. Swam again this morning, and despite having pulled a small muscle in my right upper back, and everything else being sore, I still swam a faster 500m, completed in 6:50. Getting below the 7 minute mark with the gear swim is a first, so it's got my ego pumped up even more... as if that was possible. Anyway, I'll probably do a bunch of ab work later, and running tomorrow, so we'll see how all that goes. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  7. Nothing too crazy here, but when I was at camp with the Boy Scouts years and years ago, the turd shack there was absolutely rancid. I made sure I pooped an hour before I left for the week there, and hopefully wouldn't have to poop the whole time I was there, coming home to the biggest poop I'd had in a year. One time I couldn't quite last that long though, something I ate kicked in a little too hard, and I had to shit in the rancid turd shack. Another buddy came with me, Ray, fat ass Korean kid. Little did I know he had a camera in his pocket. Well, he snapped a picture of me looking at him from behind the stall divider. Then when I was done, after the monster I dropped, he proceeded to aim the camera down the pit and take a picture of it and every other turd in there. Then he tried to light it on fire, only to realize it wouldn't work and he'd wasted all his matches for the week. Since then, my best turds have been the bigger ones, the ones that I can sit down and take time to enjoy. Edit: Also, story of the worst turd of my life. Went to India with my family, business trip for my dad, whole family sponsored by his patient to fly to India, spend a couple weeks touring, taking in the best of India, and we got to travel on what was called the "Palace on Wheels", basically a really well-appointed train travelling from city to city. One night I was having dinner with my brother, and an older couple we met on the train. I had a bowl of spinach soup along with everyone else, and it was really tasty. Of course shortly after I had the soup, I became horribly ill, puking and shitting, shitting and puking, and it was all deep green. I was puking while I was shitting, shitting while I was puking, and it went on for 12 hours like that sitting on the can before I finally started feeling a little better, and it was a few more days before I was shitting normally. My parents were worried I might die, and when a doctor and a nurse by profession both think like that, you know it's bad. 8. OK, another small update. I did complete what I said I would, 500 flutterkicks and 400 arm/leg lifts. Tomorrow's another swimming day, and I'll tack on some pushups and pullups in the evening to build my upperbody a little more. 9. Reverse pushups are a Stew Smith favorite. You lay on your belly like you would if you were starting a pushup, hands on the floor roughly shoulder width from each other, and instead of pushing your body off the ground, lift your hands off the ground, pushing your shoulder blades together. Really works your upper back. As for today, I did a 3 mile run in about 24 minutes, then did two sets of 20 jumping lunges per leg, despite the pain after the first set of 20. Tonight I'm going to do a bunch of flutterkicks, and a bunch more arm/leg lifts. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  10. Went for a swim today after my day off, really pushed myself hard. Did my first 500m in just a scratch over 8 minutes, right where I should be. Did another 1000m of kick development, then another 500m with fins and snorkel in about 8 minutes. My legs were screaming by 1000m, but BFD, still completed 2000m. Came home after work today, and did 400 situps (hurting by 300) and 400 reverse pushups (hurting by 200). Tomorrow's a fun run day, gonna hit the track for 3 miles and jumping lunges until it hurts, then a few more jumping lunges. 11. Took a day off today, and I'm glad I did. Restored some of the energy I've lost, and tomorrow should be a better swim day. And the recruiter got back to me today, said my waiver was approved for the pulse-related issue I had when I first took the CG medical, and I'm scheduled to resolve the last remaining issue next Tuesday, then I get to figure out some final questions, sign my contract, and figure out when I ship out. 12. Took it a little over a year ago, just before graduating with my BA. It wasn't all that difficult. It was just like the SAT, just a little tougher, and as such I got almost exactly the same score on the GRE as I did on my SAT. Study a little, better safe than sorry, but don't worry too much. 13. Yeah, headache was gone in a few minutes when I realized how bloody cold it was. Couldn't focus on the headache, focused instead on trying not to let my fingers get frostbite. As for the snow, most of it's gone around here too. No rain, it just warmed up slightly, and most just slowly melted. We might get more in a couple days, but not sure yet. Swam this morning, and it went like shit. Definitely one of my many off days. Still accomplished some good things, but not as much as I was hoping for. Part of it was my right arm was hurting like hell from pullups, so I couldn't quite get it to perform at its peak. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  14. Yeah, never had awesome snow tires on any car I've ever owned, including the RSX. But yes, I've heard the RSX is great if you put snow tires on it. I just have a set of high performance all-seasons on right now, beat to shit from a couple years of autocrossing and hard driving. Need to replace them, because snow and these shit tires are going to cause me an accident for sure. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  15. Yeah, Pintos and snow don't mix well at all. Got a FWD Acura RSX myself, and that definitely doesn't mix with snow, but I've made it work pretty well. I actually find it a worthy challenge to constantly compensate for loss of traction, and make it up one of the many hills around my area. Used to drive around my parents' old minivan, FWD as well, and that was a beast. Actually, it was called "The Beast" because it really was. Driving that in the snow was a death wish. One time we were headed way north, I think to Vermont, and the car was so low on gas, the digital displays were starting to lose power, and the digital speedo stopped registering. That was fun. 16. Driving in it isn't all that bad. Shoveling it can kiss my white furry ass. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  17. Wow, how'd that get in there? "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  18. Right, so couldn't run yesterday even if I wanted to. Told my parents I planned on getting in a run in the afternoon, but of course they had a dozen chores for me, reasons to keep me out of the house and off the couch relaxing until the run. So to hell with running yesterday. Got up this morning, my head was pounding, slept in another 10 minutes, then got up, said screw it, and went to the track. It was snowing lightly as I was leaving the driveway, but nothing sticking. Got up to the track, only light accumulation. By the time I was into my first half mile, it was snowing hard, and by 1 mile, I couldn't see jack shit, a thick coating on the ground, and every inch of my front had a covering of ice over it. Eyebrows, eyelashes, all over my face and neck, my shirt was covered in it, and my hands damn near froze off. But I ran my 3 miles in 23:50, almost a minute and a half faster than my last run a few days ago without snow. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  19. Got a choice today. Either I run this afternoon in addition to my swim, or I wait till tomorrow morning and run in the snow. Snow running is kind of annoying if there's any accumulation, but there's not supposed to be much with this storm, and at 6 in the morning when I'm out on the track, there should be none. It's a risk though, can't guarantee the snow will hold off until after my run. On the other hand, if I push myself too hard today, I won't be working out again until Monday for sure. 20. Lazy asses should feel compelled to exercise. It's good for you, and you know it as well as I do. And yes, it is 90% mental, and most people have about 80% mental capacity total. Can't give what you don't have, so you build up your mental toughness, then it's not so much of a problem. Swam a little over 2000m this morning, some with fins and goggles, some with full gear, some anaerobic conditioning, and some kick development. Came back and have done two sets of 10 pullups already, shooting for at least 50 on the day, and a 2-3 mile run. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  21. Congrats on the milestone! Good work! I've been doing regular swims as usual, been running 3 miles a few times a week again, did 300 pushups, 300 situps, 200 arm/leg lifts, and 200 reverse pushups this morning, and I'm doing a swim and a run tomorrow, along with some pullups to push my upper body that little bit extra. 22. If you're a gentleman, you'll hold the door for us ladies too. And I'm using that term loosely. Not too loosely I hope. Only as loose as it needs to be. You're good. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche

  24. Yeah, count me in, although I guaranteed my spot in hell a loooooooooong time ago. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
  25. Good episode. Watched it off the DVR the following day. "If at first you don't succeed... well, so much for skydiving." - aviation cliche
