What's Your Favorite Part of the Skydive?
k_marr08 replied to mattyblast's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm a newb, so maybe I have a different perspective from all you experienced guys, but the freefall is the best part for me, though watching the opening (if it's nice) is when I feel most comfortable and relieved - means my canopy is good! then smooth sailing (hopefully) until the packing area -

Skydive Long Island Swooping Competition???
k_marr08 replied to k_marr08's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
haha nope - this is a completely seperate competition hosted by Skydive Long Island, Neptune's Beach Club, and Fidelity Borrowing - they put a lotta money into making it a fantastic weekend, and no one's signed up due to poor (or NO) promotion. SoOoooo basically, if you're a swooper, and you live in the NY area, and you wanna take a drive and have a lotta fun, and probably win all 5 prizes lol considering you'll be the only competitor there, sign up!! (I took off work for the weekend, and I wanna see some swooping!!! Obviously I can't participate, and all the guys who do swooping at SDLI are working that day at the DZ lol) "I believe the risks I take are justified by the sheer love of the life I lead" - Charles Lindbergh -
I'm a newbie, and if I honestly wasn't soooo passionate about this sport, I would have quit already because of the cost. I don't make too much money bartending 2 days a week, but I'm willing to spend it all on skydiving, and of course keeping my car running so I can get to the dz. so far, ONLY FOR training and a few solos so I can get my A, I have spent $3,673.50 - that includes the 13 AFF jumps, the 3 required tandems, 5 solos, and 1 coach jump. In order for it to get cheaper, I have to spend $5,000 on gear (haha..I'll be renting gear for a while..costing $61 per solo jump) Forgot to add membership into the USPA which was I think around $50. and the SIM was $30. Thank God there are nice instructors at the dz who are willing to coach me for free aside for paying for their slot on the plane. so that would cost $85 for a coach jump instead of $122 (Because I have to include gear rental) Also one really nice guy (Larry that would be you) is letting me use his rig whenever it's around and it fits me better than any student/rental rig. So I have some outside help. But yes, intro to skydiving is insanely expensive, and if anyone were unable to afford it or not quite so passionate, they wouldn't go through the training. Skydive Long Island Swooping Competition???
k_marr08 replied to k_marr08's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Does anyone know about this?? great prizes, it is this coming weekend (7/21-7/23) - anyone in the tri-state area should pm me about details - so far no one has signed up and it's less than a week away, so it could be easy money for those few who do!! (this should be you! as long as you have a D license and under 150 sq ft. canopy) pm me or call the dz for more info : 631-208-3900 ---there is a thread on the events forum explaining most details, plus: http://www.skydivelongisland.com/swoop.shtml "I believe the risks I take are justified by the sheer love of the life I lead" - Charles Lindbergh -
For those of you who live in the tri-state area, get your butts over to Long Island this weekend for the swoop thing!! - as dog said before, 1st prize $2000, 2nd prize $1000, 3rd prize $500, 4th prize $250, 5th prize Pro Dytter - NO ONE HAS SIGNED UP!!! in other words, if you sign up, meet the requirements (D license, canopy under 150 sq ft) and do the 6 jumps, you are guaranteed to win unless you bring more than 4 friends with you!!! Sign up and come out!! Free drinks all weekend! What are you waiting for?!?!? "I believe the risks I take are justified by the sheer love of the life I lead" - Charles Lindbergh

Statue of Liberty is good on a couple of ferries in the area (walking up all the steps wasn't worth it in my experience, but looking at it is pretty cool) - battery park has some interesting (and free) things going on, but I've only been there in the summer, so it might be different when it's cold. see the rockettes. go to the top of the empire state building - watch out, the hot chocolate is burning hot!! times square is nothing really great, just another part of the city (I'm sure you'll get to it at some point without even trying)...ellis island is ok if you have ancesters who came over there and you know their names (you can find them on a wall) but it's not really that interesting...also if you find that airline tickets are cheaper coming into JFK, they also have an airtran which will take you from the airport to Penn station. Chinatown and little Italy are pretty cool - in chinatown you can buy some nice gucci (and other name-brand) watches and sunglasses for under $10 (you can talk them down too) Make sure you understand the subways before you even go. they will be your best friend. the streets make up some kind of grid - know that before you go. (streets run east and west and their numbers start south and go north. avenues run north and south and their numbers start east and go west)

I live in Baldwin - if anyone needs a ride I can help out, but I like to leave at all different times, so if you're coming out to Baldwin you'd have to leave pretty early in the morning (and plan it out with me in advance). pm me if you need a ride.

my sister moved to nc from ny (where I live) maybe 5-7 years ago - she just started saying "bless her little heart" - ALL the time - I think it's hilarious - my brother also moved to va 10 or so years ago and has since said ya'll without even realizing it (also all the time) When I was driving in NC I noticed that plenty of drivers drive wayyy too slow and to not get stuck behind ANYONE - also they can't turn very fast, it takes them forever even to turn right???!! but it is a nice place - people are very very friendly, and in that sense it's much nicer than the majority of the people up here in NY. Brake fire on opening - what caused it and how to avoid ?
k_marr08 replied to lintern's topic in Safety and Training
I'm very new, but have had 2 toggle problems already - one was unstowed (could have been from the hard opening I had on that jump) and due to good instruction I knew that if the canopy is turning on its own grab the toggles and try to turn it the other way - so did that and that unstowed the other toggle and it was fine. the second problem was a little scarier - the small knot that stops the toggle from going through the little metal ring, went through the metal ring. so it was basically stuck in full flight and took me a good 2000 feet of yanking and pushing the knot back through to fix it for a safe landing. (thank god I opened high in order to perform some maneuvers for A requirements) pretty sure that last one was a packing problem but showed it to the rigger at my dz and I believe he's going to make adjustments.
