Thank you Spot! I liked the first one the best, it's the most "sophisticated" in my eyes. And I liked the second guy's dog fight idea...

Can I use your skydiving footage for a documentary?
Laszloimage replied to jscorcia's topic in Photography and Video
" how the same mindset, mentality, and lessons learned from becoming a licensed skydiver can be applied to help people become successful as entrepreneurs" Your idea is true! Complying with that I'm more than happy to license some aerial footage for an appropriate fee -
Ville, While I agree the shallow depth of field isn't always the most in skydiving (like beach boogies when the scenic in a back is important too, large formation in a flat angle when everyone has to be sharp, and few more scenarios...) in other occasions really makes the image. Today I took my 50mm F1.2 lens on my Mark-II (580EX flash too) and set it to F1.6 As I mentioned before framing in freefall with a 50mm lens isn't that difficult. The 1.6 in the other hand requires a relatively steady skydive in order to get sharp images. The AI servo needs to follow the subject super precisely, 10-20cm change in the distance makes a huge difference. Mark-III (or even the 7D in this matter minus the crop factor) would be a better option. But as I said as long as I no "hard core chasing in the sky" the Mark-II does a good job too. I came down with about 30 freefall pictures only 4 or 5 of them was out of focus... http://www.laszloimage.com/2013/June_2013/#June_27_13%20016.JPG http://www.laszloimage.com/2013/June_2013/#June_27_13%20026.JPG http://www.laszloimage.com/2013/June_2013/#June_27_13%20027.JPG http://www.laszloimage.com/2013/June_2013/#June_27_13%20024.JPG

Today I had a chance to play with the SL1. I think it's the best SLR for skydiving in the APS-C size category. It has a better image processor (DIGIC-5) than the 7D! If some into the "burst mode" I think 4 frames per second is still pretty good. I tried the AF with my 100-400mm lens while a swooper was coming at me and it was able to follow the subject without any problem. All shots were sharp. It is a very impressive camera for its price and size! Ebay has good deals: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EOS-Rebel-SL1-18-0-MP-Digital-SLR-Camera-Black-Body-/230978969457?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item35c76b5f71

Thank you for the compliment Ken! The 50mm lens is quiet manageable for any fairly experienced camera guy with sight on the helmet... Beyond that becomes tricky The 70-200 was open all the way to f 2.8 The 50mm was used around f2 and 2.5 for the other two shots. F 1.2 is hard to work with.

I can make it with a lot smaller profile right angle plug though...
-
Thank you! Shame on me, I wasn't even aware of these! Now I know... Too many stuff out there to be able to follow everything.
-
Thank you! 5D and 5D Mark-II bodies. The first shot with Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS lens, the other two with Canon 50mm f1.2 L lens.

A few mirrorless models from Samsung have a hard wire remote option The models are: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/898123-REG/Samsung_ec_ex2fzzbpwus_EX2_Digital_Camera_White.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/937485-REG/samsung_ev_nx1100babus_nx1100_mirrorless_digital_camera.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/966428-REG/samsung_ev_nx2000bfwus_nx_2000_digital_camera_with.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/882574-REG/Samsung_ev_nx1000blpus_NX1000_Mirrorless_Wi_Fi_Digital.html I can make a switch which connects to the camera's USB port, or I can make an adapter for your existing 2.5mm mouth/bite/tongue switch. I can also make a cable for a blow switch If you're interested please PM to me BlueS! Laszlo

The shallow DOF can really work IMO...

Thanks again Spot!

Thank you so much for the valuable info as always! You saved me some time from reading through a bunch of usless google results... :) I'm exited to use the HC3 with one of these external recorders. I'll decide at B&H wheter I get BMD or Ninja. I like the LCD monitor on the Ninja, the BMD seems to have few more options for less money...
-
Back to using older cameras again... :) Does the good old HC3 output uncompressed 4:2:2? Even if it's interlaced... How about CX100? The HC3 still seems to me better from the sensor aspect right? It would be great to use these older cameras in some low budget aerial projects with higher quality unitizing the BMD or the Ninja...

Thank you for the info Spot!

any experience with Canon C500, Sony F5 or maybe even the Sony F55? Size and weigh is definitely "jumpable" :)

There was a picture in Parachutist many years ago of Norman jumping an IMAX camera mounted on his belly.

It depends of your budget... Without a good lens doesn't make sense to have a good camerabody. Matter the fact is a 450D is a better optinon with a Canon L series lens than a 7D with a cheaper lens. The Canon 16-35 II L f2.8 is a very good choice but it's $1400 at least. The Canon 17-40 L f4 is a descent lens too for skydiving, and it's significantly cheaper.

Thank you Spot! I'll check it out. I'm sure it's excellent and valuable as always... Laszlo

Wow! The 13 f stop dynamic range is amazing. How about sound recording? Same old DSLR separate audio recording or does this little thing capable to have descent sound with external microphones?
-
..so 8K is kinda good for digital IMAX instead of 70mm film right?
-
"Where is the end?" Trying to be futuristic here... I guess eventually we won't have displays at all. Experinces (images, emotions, sounds, smells, and etc all together) will be recorded and trasmitted directly into the brain. It will be some kind of virtual reality, kinda like an acid dream :)

The crazy things is people still don't have the demand to receive their tandem videos in HD . I have the capability to make and deliver HD since early 2008 (1080 in many possible formats). On Saturday one of my tandem video costumer was a film student here in NY. She asked me for the raw footage so she could edit it by her self. When I asked her what resolution and format (SD, AVCHD, MOV and etc...) she was clueless. Similar situations occur once or twice a month... And as I said no regular costumer ever came and asked if they could have their tandem video in high definition. Now the question is we gonna have these nice 4K and even 8K cameras, but how about displays, delivery and demand?

I'm beyond "sensitive" about issues like premature deployment. That's why I choose Mirage... My oldest Mirage rig was made in Jan 2002 and has 2500+ jumps. The bridle/pin protection is still perfect. The stifinner in the main pin cover had to be replaced once, and the leg straps were repleced after 2300 jumps (they started to get fuzzy on the edges from the friction adpters...) I'm not using that rig right now, but I'm plannning to set it up as a once out of the blue needed 3rd rig. They're well built rigs. Mirage was pioneering freefly safety in the late 90s

Mirage is the best for camera work
