How did you're first Hop & Pop go?
Zarkon replied to Sletzer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I saved mine until later in the coach jumps because my exits were sometimes sketchy. Before I did them I went up on a couple solos to practice my exit and get comfortable. H&P went fine, but I did get the whole "holy sh*t the ground looks close!" and the "OMG this opening sequence is taking too long!!"...All-in-all the jump demonstrated exactly what it was supposed to and I'm still here -
Are you in an area where its cold in the winter? Ask them to leave their jacket in a closet or something, probably help a lot.

People with tart burners etc at their desk can also bug people, just another joy of working in an office. I used to have a cube across from someone who would spray a citrus fragrance all the time because she didn't like the smell of the building, made it smell like we worked in a damn grapefruit plantation. I'm a smoker who has quit a couple times, and when I do I can't stand the smell either, so I can sympathize with both sides. I'd suggest looking into a mild more neutral smell, like some dried eucalyptus to set on your desk. You can always approach them on it but chances are if he/she is already going outside to smoke there is nothing they can do short of leaving their jacket somewhere else and washing their hands. Damn all this smoke talk makes me need a cigarette

I know, was just giving him shit If you make a typo it's usually best just to take the flack, otherwise it gets confusing when someone posts about it and the typo is gone

Usually preceded by, if I flip you off and pull it's probably time for you to pull. "At 100 jumps YOU don't pie your INSTRUCTOR"

Wow harsh crowd, you know what I mean damnit Correction: softer openings
-
I bought a Spectre 230 earlier this season and have been wondering about the openings myself. After I had it attached and jumped it the first time it took ~1200ft to open. This was packed by the rigger, who likes softer landings, but I didn't like the fact that I had enough time to sit there and curse at the canopy before it was fully open. Spectre is a very popular canopy at my home DZ so I've heard probably every variation of the packing method imaginable, and I'm still not sure what I should be trying. Right now I push the nose in and pull it back out about 75% of the way and my openings are at ~800-900ft. Is this a good distance or should I try not tucking the nose at all?

Listening To Music While Skydiving!
Zarkon replied to Skyhighbird's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My first couple jumps(tandem) I thought this was a great idea also, until I entered AFF and learned that there is a lot more to pay attention to than I first thought. And yes I did receive plenty of instruction with my tandem jumps... So as much as having a soundtrack to my own death sounds appealing, first coming to mind Bodies by Drowning Pool, it's probably not a wise decision. Besides it's probably hard to head bang in freefall, and I don't think trying to start formation moshing would appeal to others. On a serious note... I've had many problems with my ears caused by skydiving, and have considered wearing ear plugs. I've also listened to almost all of the SDR episodes, but don't recall this ever coming up. Can someone provide me with the show # so I can refresh my memory? -
What goes through your mind when you get injured?
Zarkon replied to jigneshsoni's topic in Safety and Training
Last Saturday after my AFF6 I landed without full flaring(more like half breaks). The moment I felt the ground touch my feet I thought 'Oh shit this is a bit fast'. I'm not sure why I wasn't able to PLF, but when I came to a stop my left leg was bent around to my side. I have never broken a bone before, so I looked at it and thought 'so this is what a broken ankle feels like? Not too painful after all'. Like most other posts here, I moved my leg and found it wasn't broken and hobbled off. Walked around testing it for a couple hours to decide whether or not I could do my last AFF jump that day, but found that it was getting worse as time passed so I went home. The next day I woke up and my whole foot was swollen and black and blue, so I gave in and went to the ER. Results were it was a nasty sprain, got an air cast and crutches. Now I'm just icing it and taking a lot of Ibproffin praying that I'll be able to jump tomorrow or Sunday. Never once did I reconsider participating in the spot, but was/am concerned about getting the 'bowling speech' after all my shitty landings. Hopefully I've learned my lesson, and wont do that again! -
another unethical dz website
Zarkon replied to happythoughts's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
He does have a point though, that if the web sites designer spoke openly in this forum that it would just become a flame fest...but he has taken action on our feedback and it sounds like the code was removed. If this is the case I don't think there's any reason to continue to beat him up over it. Just my .02 -
another unethical dz website
Zarkon replied to happythoughts's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
From a web development standpoint I would agree that it's unethical to manipulate the search criteria like this, but I'd leave it at unethical advertising or at most business practices. I wouldn't consider the DZ 'unsafe' because they want to trick consumers into hitting their site first. There's a lot of web consultants out there whose only job is to increase the web traffic on a site by manipulating search criteria, it's possible the DZ didn't intend to be deceptive...and if so I doubt they sit around the bonfire at night cooking up evil plots. Looks like they also disabled rlick and highlight on their main page now, but it can still be seen by ctrl-a ctrl-c ...well whatever works for them I guess -
Haha I work and play in front of a computer...Guess I've let myself become too squishy, but I'm working on it.

On my AFF3 a couple weeks ago I flared several times at high alt to get my slider to come down the rest of the way, and had no problems. When it came time to flare for real my left arm stopped half way and my right continued, causing a slight turn. I didn't know what was going on so I threw more weight into the left toggle so I could land evenly, ever since I have had pains in my shoulder Still waiting for an apt with the Orth....I'm kind of skitish about jumping until I'm confident in my arm. But anyway more on topic, I have been having a hard time with the toggles on my student gear also, and was told push-ups and working on my tricepts would be a big help.

Drove down from Buffalo, NY last weekend and split an hr with 2 friends. For our first time in a tunnel we all agreed the staff and facility were great. Was well worth the 7-8 hr drive.

I'm going through the AFF course at Frontier right now myself, and have to say I've been having a great time.
