  9. and then at the end of the thread they say it IS REAL! "The pic is real. It is from the September 2005 issue of Africa Geographic (http://www.africageographic.com ). Unfortunately it seems you need to have a magazine subscription to see the article online (which I don't have - I have the magazine though). In short it is an article by Michael C. Scholl (founder of the White Shark Trust) & Thomas P. Peschak who have been doing Great White shark research around Dyer Island and Shark bay off the Western Cape coast of South Africa. The link to the actual article is http://http://www.africa-geographic....icleID=A130801 Apparently they took to the kayak as they couldn't get into the shallow water with the motor boat. Also they found that the noise and vibration produced by the engine was disrupting the natural behavoiur of the sharks by repeatedly attracting or repelling the sharks from the boat. They did test the sharks' reactions using an empty kayak before they put anyone in it. If that were me in the photo, I think the paddles would be a blur - that's how fast I would be going to get out of there" So not BS after all! x Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  10. Please bear in mind that I am a RAPs student, with only 20 jumps and have never jumped elsewhere, so this is written entirely form an inexperienced students point of view. I have found this to be a really friendly and encouraging place to jump and train at, all the instructors and staff have time to chat to you and there is a nice vibe about the place with pretty much everyone very friendly. The planes are good on busy days and during the week when there have been no tandems and no one else wanting to jump then they have put the Cherokee (sp?) up for 3 of us. The facilities are good, a nice bunkhouse with heating and TVs and there are warm showers. There is free wireless Internet in the bar area. The café does adequate food, sandwiches, baked potato as well as the always-welcome bacon sarnies and full fry ups. I can’t comment on the services as I don’t know enough about what is on offer and quality to make any kind of judgment. It very easy to get to off the motorway. The only point that could be perceived as bad for some people is that they are very strict on refresh dates for students, if you are over 2 month without a refresh and it is quite expensive. But this hasn’t affected me, you can’t keep me away! The weather is not great either, – but where in the UK is!? All in all, I really enjoy jumping here and found this a very welcoming place to get an introduction into the sport.
  11. Kids are way more likely to see ghosts because they have a beter imagination that a lot of adults - and that is what ghosts are, in your mind. Don't get me wrong, you can have a creepy experience, a room or something feel odd, but if you went back with lots of lights on and a few friends the 'ghostly atmosphere' would be gone! x Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  12. :3:0 then it started to snow a little bit so put on weather hold, but not too bad tor the UK winter I guess! x Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  13. There is no way the DZ that you are doing your training with will let you use your own stuff untill you are off student status, even if it did have a cypress. x Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  14. Isn't that a bit of a gereralisation? That doesn't seem to be the ethos with the club I jump with. Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  15. I know i am REALLY new, but I feel rusty if I havn't jumped for 3 or 4 weeks - and that is despite practicing EPs and counts at home (please dont tell my non skydiving friends...) Do you have any friends who will let you jump their rig? Then you could jump enough to stay 'in the groove' and not waste money on hiring kit. Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  16. ..on the playground is where i spent most of my days..... Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  17. I have never seen anyone wear one, am I being blind or is this more of a US thing? Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  18. I had 2 plates taken out of my arm - but beware, that operation was way worse than the one to put them in. Something about muscle growing around them or something? x Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  19. Yes, I am with Leeds. You don't need to think about equipment yet, it is included in the jump ticket price for student jumps and you have to wear the lovely green jumpsuits and orange helmets anyway. Talk to me on msn if you want to know who to contact to see about jumping with us. Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  20. And on the temperature: I was jumping yesterday from 5500 - 6000 ft and it was a bit colder than on the ground (5deg) but with some wind chill - wear thermals under thick clothes and gloves and it is fine. The experienced guys jumping from 15000 ft said it was about -20 up there! Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  21. Hi. I am progressing with RAPS and am on 15 sec delays. I did 10 mins tunnel time while I was still on dummy pulls and I think it would have been better to wait until after my first free fall. This is because being in the tunnel and free fall are quite different Numbers of jumps in a day: I have managed to get 4 jumps in on a few days, and 3 on the rest, but weather is the limiting factor, I have been to the DZ nearly every weekend since my first jumps and have only jumped on 5 occasions. 4 Jumps in a day is very tirering, some people can handel more, some less. Jump tickets for £20: Are you talking about jumping with Leeds at Hibaldstow? Leeds University Skydiving Club www.skydiveleeds.co.uk
  22. Whats the rush with AFF? Spread the cost with RAPs, if you do AFF will you be able to afford to jump once you get your licence? Also if you are planning on going down to a DZ and stay while you do AFF then your budget could easily be mucked up by bad weather, you could loose days to cloud / wind ect.
