It really is a shame that the most that some can come up w/ is that "we" who own guns and who defend our rights to own guns are "paranoid. As if that is the ONLY possible explanation for this scenario with which we are faced. It shows a clear lack of understanding, closed-mindedness, myopia, whatever you wish to call it. The arguments for gun ownership/possession are compelling and easily found, but it's obviously a waste of breath on the likes of some who are posting here. Perhaps a little history lesson is in order... in this case RECENT history... there are now at least 38 if not 40 states that are decidedly PRO-GUN as evidenced by their passage of concealed carry laws, effectively allowing law-abiding citizens to carry handguns. Also, there has has been defeat after defeat after defeat of the anti-gun lobby in their attempts to pass gun-restricting legislation of late. Oh, and remember the assault weapons ban? Me neither. This Memorial Day takes on spcial signficance for me. As some of you know, my family and I now live outside a very small town in rural Illinois. A couple of weeks ago, Bravo Company of the Effingham IL National Guard returned from Iraq and there was a huge parade for them. Weeks later, the streets are still lined w/ yellow ribbons, flags, and signs welcoming them home. However, it was not all roses. On the very day of their return, a local high school graduate, Chris Donaldson, was killed when his Chinook helicopter crashed in Afghanistan. He was the very first casualty that this rural county suffered. About a week or so after the festive homecoming, there was a much more somber gathering on the streets of Effingham. Morners lined the streets of the town, holding candles and flags, to greet the funeral procession which consisted of cars from the funeral home, family members, at least a hundred motorcycle riders (I forget what they are called, this group), fire trucks from every nearby county (at least 20 trucks!!), police cars, and National Guard vehicles. Since this is a small town, everyone knew who this young man was and the streets were again filled with people. It was an incredibly moving sight. Not being a native of the area, I didn't know him, but it didn't seem to matter. I couldn't help but cry anyway. I was witnessing an incredibly moving event and it changed me -and hopefully the lives of my children- forever. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...
