Overseas canopy regulations and travelling
strop45 replied to ianmdrennan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No problems for New Zealand with the wingloading. BTW All jumpers regardless of jump numbers/license level need to have AAD to jump in NZ. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
Are you sure its in degrees F. Sounds more like degrees C? The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Good job. If it had of been me, then I would have unstowed the brakes and given them 3 large flares to try and clear the lineover. Assuming that the lineover was a brake line, then releasing them will reduce the distortion of the canopy. The other point to remember is that 2100' under an almost normal canopy is quite different to being at terminal velocity at 2100'. It is important that you remain altitude aware, but IMO you can cutaway lower than you could while at terminal velocity and still be under a functioning reserve at a higher altitude. Other more experienced skydivers may have a different opinion? Note, students, I am NOT advocating lowering your hard deck, talk to your instructors and stick to your plan. Could you explain your theory a little more? How is the twisting strain produced? When I pack, the canopy ends up the same way round for both pro-pack and psycho-packs, its just one is rolled up and the other is folded. The lines exit the d-bag in the same place and are the same way around. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Try psycho packing it. I've got about 200 jumps on a safire 2 and generally get nice on heading openings with a psycho pack. Just watch the pack job is symmetrical when it is lying on the floor (i.e. before you roll it up). blue skies The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

What side mount/handicam camera to get that is currently available.
strop45 replied to rhys's topic in Photography and Video
Hi Rhys Sadly, it seems no such beast exists. The HC38 is a little wider than the HC30/HC40 series but cookie do make a sidemount box for it, although as mentioned by another poster no LANC port. Best options appear to be either buy secondhand (ebay etc..) or go topmount and use HC3/HC5/HC7 etc.. AFAIK, the NTSC/PAL doesn't matter unless you intend to play directly from the handycam to a television or use the A/V output. If you are using firewire to transfer video, then no problem using an NTSC camera and making PAL DVDs. regards Wayne The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
So who or what is forcing you to read or post here..I've learnt something from this thread and the other you refer to and will continue to read. Learning isn't about finding people who agree with you, its about finding new information, thinking about alternative points of view, and making your own mind up. Blue skies. Agreed, although the higher the closing speed, then the less time for either pilot to avoid a collision. Slower canopies moving at similar speeds and flying the same pattern will have more time to alter course, while canopies flying different patterns or with different speeds will have less time. This is just common sense isn't it? The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

whats so difficult about 3 * 5.5 = 16.5L. For me, its easier to multiply by 3 than divide by 25. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
If the opening started with you in a sit, was perfectly on heading but just very fast, I agree with you 100%. If on the other hand, you start from a belly to earth position and then doesn't leverage come into play? Just as more weight is harder on your neck, then more leverage is also. Of course the twisting moment might be harder on your neck than the in-line whip-lash, but I'm not so sure. Note I'm not really disagreeing with you, just trying to get a better understanding... And does everyone use your standard pattern ? Here's at least one variation.... From Australian Parachute Federation B license Manual EXERCISE 10. LANDING: The novice plans a landing approach from around 2000’ to simulate a normal jump using the “J” approach method as the target is always in view. The approach is commenced at an altitude of approx. 500 feet, upwind of the target and parallel to the wind line. A turn onto the “base” leg should be made around 350 feet, by performing a 90-degree turn across the wind, downwind of the target. A further 90-degree turn onto the final approach into wind is made at about 150 feet. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Yip, and I'm generally the same. I think the reason that the minimum setpoint is 300' is to do with accuracy. If the optima's error is say 50' then at 300' setting thats 250-350'. With a 100' minimum thats 50' to 150'. I hear the 300' beep, have a look at the ground, where I am, where I want to land and then fly on to my final turn. The advantage of the optima is that I can spend my time looking around for other canopies, looking at the ground, estimating height by eye, working out wind speed etc and not looking at my wrist mount. Back to the original thread title, I haven't replaced the batteries or turned it off in the last year, although I did spend some time one day searching my car to see what was beeping (cellphone, low fuel alarm??? what is it???) as I drove over a 2000' hill. Well the discussion may not be 'healthly' but it has been interesting. IMO expecting skydivers to actually listen and understand each other is going a bit far... One other aspect is that being an 'easy' student doesn't necessarily make you safe, nor does being a more 'difficult' student automatically make you a danger to yourself and those around you. I think that key is self-awareness and understanding your limitations. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Actually not too difficult. Rotate your arms so that your hands are palm up. This allows you to look back at your alti and also tends to roll your shoulders down helping you de-arch and track better. Talk to your instructors. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

It took me quite a few jumps before I could judge altitude by just looking (even with instructors being tough on CoAs). On the other hand, even on the first jump I could count and at 5 seconds for 1000', it isn't too tricky to work out where you are, especially starting from a known break-off height. RMW may not be such a good choice.. From their website -------------------------------------------- NOTE: Due to unforeseen circumstances RMW is temporarily not accepting jumpsuit orders. If you currently have an order with us it will be delivered as scheduled. We will accept warranty repairs (less than 12 month old) only. The embroidery service is still available. Physics of Skydiving Question
strop45 replied to UnusualAttitude's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
an object increases its speed when it has unequal force acting on it. For a skydiver, gravity provides one force and drag an opposing force. When the force due to drag is equal to the force due to gravity the objects speed remains constant, i.e. it is at terminal velocity. In the absence of air and therefore drag, a feather fails at the same rate as a brick. Add some air and the story is different. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
Agreed. Most of us don't need either a reserve or an AAD on most jumps. The problem is that one jump when you do need one and haven't got one....... The same arguments can be made for any safety device or safety rules. There are always exceptions or circumstances in which they pose a hazard. Where the argument gains more traction is where the risks that the safety device deals with are less than the additional risks imposed by having it. Using your example, if every jump you were going to be open at 1200 feet, then having an AAD on your reserve might be higher risk than not. Similarly if you swoop every jump, then the risk of a misfire killing you might be higher then the risk of a no pull. Everyone needs to understand and accept the risks they are taking. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein
-
This and popsjumper being more aware of safety with his non-aad equipped rig could equally be arguments for NOT having reserves.....Would improve everyones safety awareness, cure the two out problem and increase the injury/death rate.... Notice of Proposed Rulemaking 180 day inspection cycle
strop45 replied to councilman24's topic in Gear and Rigging
What are the 'risks' associated with lengthening the repack cycle? In NZ we have 6 months, in parts of Europe its currently 12 months? Looking through this forum there appears to a considerable number of reserve packing concerns raised by riggers looking at the work of other riggers. Might it not be better to have a longer repack cycle, but require two riggers to sign off on the work - one doing it and one just watching and making sure its 100%? Hi Doug I have used one on every jump. For AFF jumps and most of the next 100, it was set to 3000' and so generally I was pulling before it went off. If I'm trying something new or its a bigger group I set it higher. If left at 5000', I have found that I do start using it in preference to the visual altimeter. When I feel this is happening, I now set all alarms to 2000'. I figure that in the event of a malfunction (none yet), this will refocus my altitude awareness if necessary. Blue skies Wayne. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

No but you might if at 10 years the manufacturer said that's it, its now junk, especially if it had been sitting in your garage the whole time. There's nothing magic about 12 years, its simply an arbitrary figure, albeit based on knowledge of the modes/risks of failure, experience and detailed knowledge of the technology. The Cypres in the rig which is doing 1500 jumps per annum times out at the same time as the Cypres in the weekend jumper rig who is doing 50 jumps a year. Since thermal cycling is a significant factor in electronic faults/failures, at best the 12 years is a compromise value, based on the expected failure modes. At the end of the day if you buy a Cypres, you know that you are buying 12 years of use, so its no use bitching about afterwards. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Its hard to see any good reason why the user can't request that a maintenance is bought forward, i.e. the 8 year maintenance is done early and therefore the total useful life of the AAD is reduced. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein
