  1. A friend of mine just finished his 1st full in Louisville. ~15 hrs, he had a flat and then lost his rear derailleur so only had two gears. It was cool that we could follow him online watching the live splits throughout the day; it really drove home how much work it is to do it. Good luck! 2. I am on my 3rd Sabre 2, a 135 loaded now at almost 1.5. I have about 60 jumps on it, and I notice that it does something that my other Sabre 2's didn't do. If I start a rear riser turn with the brakes stowed, or the canopy opens in a turn, it will continue to turn until I correct it with the other riser. It only happens with a sustained turn like 90 degrees or so, not with small or gentle inputs. I am not a fan of this behavior, and would like to stop it if I could. I want to know: 1. Is this normal for Sabre 2s at this wingloading? 2. Is this normal for all semi-elliptical or elliptical wings at this or higher wingloading? 3. I noticed that I do have some line shrinkage, there is now about 3" between the inside and outside A lines when I have it over my shoulder. Could this contribute to this twitchiness? 3. I loved his books back in the day, up to and including the Alvin Maker series. Pisses me off the man has turned into bat-shit crazy crackpot. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  4. Of course that is true, but in fact the USPA has a great deal to threaten a manufacturer with, up to "you can build and sell that gear, but we can make it very difficult to find a place in the USA where your buyer can use it". Once something gets into the BSRs, it can be binding on the many DZs that have agreed to follow the BSRs in their airport lease agreements. In effect the BSRs do have some force of law, even if just contract law. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  5. Yes, Greg, let's talk about shooting the messenger. I for one am on principle against it, but in your case I would be willing to make an exception. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  6. Sounds like I basically agree with you. I just want to emphasize that the best "true flat" turn does not start from prolonged braked flight, one that is long enough to settle the canopy in a steady state. 7. Yup. Pretty much the last word on the maneuver. In that post, Bill refers to a "true flat turn" as a special case of a braked turn, and that is what I should have said in my post above when trying to distinguish between the two. 8. I was taught a distinction between a "flat turn" and a "braked turn". Bill von Novak in his downsizing checklist describes what I consider a flat turn: A flat turn as Bill teaches it echos the APF, first pull a toggle down, then pull opposite toggle to limit the dive, and release both toggles as the turn ends to resume full flight. What I consider a "braked turn" is a turn that starts and ends in brakes (1/2 - 3/4 etc). This turn is easier to execute and teach, but is not as quick as a flat turn and leaves the pilot with less forward speed to use for landing. Andy is teaching a braked turn. 9. Wow. I'd have the same power to weight ratio as my STi (180lb driver gives a little over 10lb/hp.). And with the ability to pull that many G's, I would bet it could beat my car around a twisty track pretty easily. I bet it IS a beast to drive; I have heard ppl have cracked ribs. 10. It would be a good idea to send an email to USPA HQ and have them update the manual to add a "*" to the D license requirement. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  11. From the lack of an asterisk by the D requirement in the governance manual that JP posted, I take it the D-licence requirement is non-waiverable, hence there is no loophole. Seth It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  12. I don't know what you meant, but this is what google told me: Intestinal Bile Acid-Binding Protein It kind of makes sense. "In Before Ad Block Plus" Just assuming someone soon would mention ad blockers; I run ABP on Chrome and Firefox, so my internet surfing is largely ad free. I don't feel bad about it; in the 10+ years of internet browsing before I ran ad blockers, I may have clicked on 1 or 2 ads. 14. Quien sabe? It does not appear that your calculations take into account the fact that as the jackpot increases, more people play, so the odds of multiple winners increase. This reduces the probability x payout value. But yes at some point, playing for large jackpots makes sense. 15. In sundevil's defense, you didn't read the /his first post in the thread. Paraphrasing, he says, "I know that the statistics numbers are against me, and I don't recommend any newbs following my lead. In fact, I realize that I may have increased my odds of death in skydiving by removing my RSL, but I am doing it anyway." I have to respect that, he is not being hubristic, "it won't happen to me." argument. He is basically saying "I would rather die from my own failings than some freak gear error". 16. Or to make it more clear, something like, "Skydiving is like sex: they are both an act you can do by yourself, but are much more fun with a friend." To the OP, you won't want to jump by yourself much after you start jumping with others. Like Glideangle said, you won't have a problem safely jumping a few weekends a month with small groups or solo. I have Lamsonsharp knives, made in USA. http://www.lamsonsharp.com/ I bought them here (10 years ago): http://www.knifemerchant.com/ It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  18. It was probably mentioned up-thread, but one obvious non-equality for HD AAD activations is the AAD won't be in a burble, so it will fire higher, IIRC 250+ ft. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  19. Obviously Dave is perfectly capable of defending himself, but I will add that I find the whole "shut up and jump" attack to be weak sauce. Most of us have lots of free time during the week, and we choose to spend/waste it different ways. I would much rather Dave spend some of it here than watching Family Guy reruns or SportsCenter. I like Dave's long replies. He has strong opinions, but unlike other experienced jumpers with such opinions, he backs his up with some reasoning. You may disagree with it, but at least you have points to debate. In contrast, I find one-liner posts like "You're an idiot", or "Can I be on your ash dive" or "Let me know where you jump so I will never go there" to be less constructive. If you are going to shit on someone's life choices, at least be like Dave and give them some detailed/well reasoned thoughts on why. 20. Of course not. I would affix it to my forearm in some way, and only play around with it on a high pull. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  21. I have had the idea before that if you had an android app, you could estimate windspeed and direction by flying in a slow circle. Like this: 1. push button on app to start 2. pull down 1 toggle to start slow turn 3. app waits a few sec logs heading and position 4. app monitors heading, detecting that it changes 180 then changes 180 back (a full circle) 5. app logs new position takes delta time to old position to come up with wind velocity vector. Or it could be a box: 1. push button on app to start 2. Fly at straight full flight until app says turn 3. turn about 90 deg 4. fly straight at full flight until app says turn 5 repeat 2x more 6 app uses differences between measured velocities on each leg to calculate wind velocity and canopy full flight airspeed at the same time. 23. My wife watched "Forks over Knives" 13 months ago and has not had any meat since. I refuse to watch it, cause I like meat too much to give it up completely, but I like the fact that since the primary cook is now vegetarian, I eat a lot less meat than I used to. 25. Thanks Yuri, I never considered that. Even though Chris is shitting on your model, it makes sense. It was counter-intuitive until I thought about it, looked at your chart, and realized that even after an HD flyer has hit terminal, her body would still be along way from vertical, as the relative wind would still contain a strong horizontal component. Indeed, for the case in the chart, the body would never be completely vertical and only get "close" after about 1200m or so.
