  2. Yeah, I see the wolf and I gave sort of opposite advice, so as you mentioned, the correct answer is YMMV. If your bank is like his, then yes get money exchanged there. Also check to see if your bank charges for foreign currency ATM withdrawals (mine does not). 3. In my experience, using an ATM in Europe to get Euros gets you the best rate. In my experience some ATMs will charge fees or give you a rate that effectively includes a surcharge, but many do not. I was just in Belgium in Feb, and for example I got money out of two different ATMs (Fortis and Arg) on Feb 25 and Feb 26. Looking at my own bank statement, I got an net rate of $1.106 and $1.109. This is very close to the rate for the day of $1.104. When a friend of mine got Euros for his trip to Europe from his local US bank, IIRC he paid a ~%20 premium. 4. Yeah I am not too worried about Trump's chances for the presidency. 1. If he does not get a clear majority of delegates, I think he is out at the convention. Tomorrow could settle that. 2. He is going to have a hard time against Hillary. If he slides to the center, which he could easily do, he risks losing his rabid base. More people will hold their nose and vote Hillary than will hold their nose and vote Trump. However if he does get in, I worry more about foreign policy than domestic. Congress has to get on board with the president for any major domestic changes, and that will get Trump in line with standard Repub. ideology, until the mid-terms when people get fed up like seems to happen often. Then a democratic Senate will just shut things down for the next 2 years. But Trump really feels like he could start a war just to improve his poll numbers. Seriously. I know lots of presidents have been accused of doing that, but I think Trump could take it to the next level. 5. You read these forums for 10 years and still decided to join the sport? I'll raise a glass to that. I'll bet you have forgotten more skydiving trivia and bullshit than most A licence jumpers will ever know. 6. It's very easy to read the content of the link before actually following it. And once you do read the link, it could still take you to malware, just like any link you could read in the first place. Well in his defense, QR links are often cryptic and the eventual website is often different that QR embedded link name. But I guess if I got a flyer with a QR link and it was for a service I was interested in I would scan it. I think the odds of the link being to something that could damage my phone are low, because: 1. Malware creators would be unlikely to be printing and distributing flyers for specific services. I can see if I got a flyer on the Las Vegas strip with a dubious title "free secrets of how to win at poker" maybe, but not "Bill's snowplow service". 2. My phone browser is pretty well sandboxed. Malicious stuff on phones generally comes through the app store or app sideloading, not a browser. 8. That article is about older keyfob hacking (the "push the button on the remote" door unlocker/locker that we all have). But reading some of the other links that come up, it seems there are two main possibilities for hacking keyless systems. 1. Smash a window to break into the car and get access to the OBDII port and program a new blank keyless fob using a key programmer. 2. Use an special antenna and amplifier to make a car believe that a keyfob that is 100m away is actually in or near the car, allowing someone to unlock and start the car as long as the keyfob is somewhere near by. #1 sounds like it is in use (in London at least). I'm not sure if #2 has made it that far out of academia, but it is a really slick idea. It can be defeated by keeping the key in a metal or foil lined box or bag when not needed. I'm not really worried about either of these yet. I have not heard of auto theft of any kind being a problem where I live, and I have comprehensive auto insurance so a stolen vehicle would not be a devastating event, but a really annoying one. 9. I really like the keyless in my subaru. Esp in winter, it is nice not to have to dig around in pockets for the key. But I did get bit with it once: I finished a bike ride back at my car and had a base layer underneath my jersey, and I was really warm. In process of taking it off, I ended setting my phone and keyfob on the roof of the car, and then I forgot them there while fussing with the bike and storing that on the roof too. Somehow in a way I could not duplicate later, I started the car with the keyfob on the roof, and drove for about 1/2 mile that way until at about 45mph I heard a rattle as the phone and keyfob fell off the roof. I pulled over, realized what happened, kept the car running while I went out and found the phone intact and the keyfob smashed by a passing car. I was pleased that the Galaxy S6 survived just fine with just a small chunk taken out of the metal ring around the screen. I drove home another 30 miles without the key and then had to pay $250 for a new fob. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  10. Peter is right, this is basic physics of rotating bodies. If a prop blade broke while the prop was spinning at 2000 rpm, the blade would fly away in a straight line (in a vacuum) but would keep spinning about its center of mass at 2000 rpm. As a thought experiment, imagine drawing an arrow on the prop (any direction any size). Put an imaginary camera so it hovers (and does not rotate) in front of the tip of arrow. Spin the prop at say 180 rpm. The video from the camera will show the arrow rotating around its tip at 180 rpm. This is true no matter where the arrow is, because all the points on the prop are in rotation. If the prop breaks, the conservation of angular momentum will transfer the rotational energy to the center of mass of the pieces. 11. That discussion does not help. I followed this drama a little bit, and it appears to me to have changed from a "boycott because of our rights, 4th amendment / privacy / etc" or a "boycott because the organizer is an asshole". I can't tell from that thread or any others I have read what is really going on. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  13. Ha Ha! Very true. My wife went on a summer road trip with a co-worker who she has worked with for 10 years. Came back with "never again". Apparently the occasional after work happy hour was different than 4 days in a car. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  14. I have a co-worker who just finished a local (west michigan) 200 mi relay, not a ragnar but I think the same model, and he got me thinking about trying to put a team together for it. His one comment that stuck with me was "24 hours is a long time to spend in a van" this was especially true for him because he was a fill-in, and so did not know the others in the van that well. He said he would only do it again if he knew his team mates better. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  15. I have to say that reading Calvin/Matt's posts over the years his life has seemed anything but boring, and I expect even if he chose the "invest / regular adventuring" option it would still not be boring. How many remember the videos of the giant rope swing thing (can't remember the name they called it). I say go for it. I like Lee's idea of really looking for a good deal on a good boat so as to minimize the loss after selling it. Do prices vary a lot around the world? Could you buy something in one part of the world and sail it another part to sell it for a better price? 17. After some internet poking around, it appears that the freakonomics article on which the wiki entry is based is incorrect. The article has Guinness world record editor Craig Glenday saying Yasuhiro Kubo took the challenge on September 2, 2000. Apparently this is true, but Craig was incorrect in his description of the world record, it was actually parachute and skydiver exit at the same time and then a delay of 50 seconds in free fall before hookup, not 50 seconds between parachute exit and skydiver exit. 18. The article mentions the use of flywheels to keep it upright; the idea is an active balance more like a tightrope walker or gymnast on a balance beam than a tied down tower. Sounds cool, but I have no idea how practical the design is. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
  19. Dammit virg, I think, tits? Where? I turn off the ad blocker, check out the ads, and it's for a vector (already got one) and chuting star (already buy from them). If I didn't know better I would think you were part of a ploy by wings to get me to check out their tandem ads. 20. Seriously? He said he was planning on removing / permanently fastening up the leg straps. How could anyone put a rig on that was not theirs, without leg straps, without risers, without handles, and without feeling like a 20lb brick? Far more likely to get on a plane without a rig at all than a backpack that looked like a rig. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

  24. is this it? twin engine, missing a tail, near an entrance, although not the skydive entrance I guess. Has wingtip tanks. Some king airs did? 25. More votes for: 1. Getting a custom ring made. It does not even have to be a mind-blowingly original design, but you will able to say your rings are unique. 2. Buying a loose stone. I got mine through USAA, but I don't think they do that anymore (and you have to be a member anyway).
