  1. Here's a clicky for you: http://willwm.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/quotationmarks-thumb.jpg - see also http://quotation-marks.blogspot.com/ To stay on topic: * Find two squares (if not: EP) * Yank on back risers to get slider down * Collapse slider, pull over toggles * Pop toggles * Loosen breast strap * Relax a few seconds in deep brakes
  2. They're also testing a new even-higher-quality format, see http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/11/youtube-tests-o.html. FYI, most YouTube videos can be viewed in higher than normal quality by adding "&fmt=18" to the URL. Now you can also use "&fmt=22" to get 720p or something. Probably not available on many videos yet.. So to be future proof you should probably consider uploading your vids in 1280x720 at a fairly high bitrate.
  3. http://www.icaruscanopies.aero/contact.htm knows.
  4. In related news, kuro5hin has a good (for once!) article on The Credit Crisis and the Bailout in Plain English. (Although the conclusion is a bit op-ed.)
  5. I almost didn't see you there, with all that camo colored gear.
  6. > The video quality is much better in the original HD format. Can you put the original on skydivingmovies.com or something? It's kinda hopeless to judge the quality from youtube. By the way, it looks like you should have de-interlaced it before uploading it to youtube. The interlacing artifacts are quite bad.
  7. So, has anyone tried this out yet? I'd like to hear how the camera+cookie box works out for casual video, from someone who's not too biased. (I'm considering this cam for inside freefly, filming students, etc., and maaybe filming tandem at a low-tandem-volume cessna dz.)
  8. http://www.sony.co.uk/product/cam-high-definition-on-memory-stick/hdr-tg3e#pageType=TechnicalSpecs says: "SteadyShot (Image Stabilisation): Super (Electronic)".
  9. Awesome! Will you be selling the lens with the box? For us lazy bastards who think 2 shops should be enough to get a fully functioning camera setup? (=
  10. I for one never ask people to check my pins. I very much appreciate when someone comments on an open flap or anything else that looks wrong. But: 1. I trust my V3 to keep both pins in place after my own pre-flight check. 2. I don't have a colored mark on my PC kill line, so it's always white. This makes some people take "an extra good look", and a lot of extra "is it supposed to ..?" in the plane. 3. My reserve flap is sliiightly on the short side, so it can be tricky to get the bottom part of the flap under the right flaps (4 and 5) while the rig is on my back. A bit too easy to only put it back under flap #9. If anyone asks me to check their pins, I will. If anyone asks if I want them to check mine, I will say yes - expecting people who ask about it to know what they're doing. I'm willing to change my attitude if there's a recorded history of incidents happening because of missing pin-checks on similar gear, though. Until then, I don't see the "bad attitude" in not asking for 'em.
  11. When I did the canopy course I was told that you need to return to full flight for 5 seconds to return to normal speed. If the intent of a swoop is to accelerate the landing then would you not want less than 5-10 seconds? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 5-10 seconds (I learned 10) was to regain forward momentum after your last toggle input. As in, a toggle turn* will leave you with less forward momentum = less lift and shorter swoop. The only acceleration you get is downward. I wish there was a free canopy flying simulator to try this on. Hint hint, unemployed geeks. (: *: Unless you use your harness as well as the toggles, making it a coordinated turn. See Brian's article. (=
  12. Well, it's not like my definition is the authoritative one. I'm just a 290 jump newb. (:
  13. I think Brian wrote this article just for you: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/safety/detail_page.cgi?ID=696. And as for the question "what is a swoop", I'd answer "the time you fly level to the ground during your flare, no matter how long or short". You'll probably get a longer swoop by flying straight in (full glide) than doing low toggle turns. Take care. (:
  14. .. and don't use too long cables between the laptop and projector. My job set up a fancy meeting room with really expensive projectors, but the output is blurry as hell because the cables are like 15 meters. According to Wikipedia you should stick to below 4.5 meters for 1920x1080 DVI; I'd guess the same applies to VGA. Just something to remember when you spec your debrief room. (-;
  15. Thank Dog there's no big hills in Switzerland. Or Norway. (: Or - don't put all your eggs in one basket.
  16. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typosquatting#Typosquatting_and_the_law - looks like Royal's infringing Cookie's trademark because they are in competition. But IANAL. Edit: clicky.
  17. Hopefully your brain would have kicked in long before that. It has done that every time so far. I get this strange feeling at around 4000 feet, telling me to look down and/or check the visual..
  18. My Neptune regularly decides to STFU during freefall(*), so.. Don't forget to watch the ground and/or visual altimeter even if you have tons of things that go BEEP in your head. (= (*): When it shuts up it will actually beep on the last swoop alarm, at 300 feet. Hopefully my cypres would have kicked in by then.
