Blue Colored Goggle Lenses...Any Opinions ?
dragon2 replied to HoldtheIce's topic in Gear and Rigging
Often you will not be allowed to jump tinted goggles until you're off student status/have your A/ ... So ask your instructor first. BTW I hate blue, I always jump clear goggles for better contact with tandem passengers and clear, yellow or purple ones when shooting FS4 and the like. The yellow actually helps, the purple is my suit color so looks kewl and it doesn't seem to hinder me any, while jumping blue or red tinted goggles definitely bothered me a lot. YMMV. ciel bleu, Saskia -
I'd say usd 1500 MAX. ciel bleu, Saskia

Doing CRW with a Springo? You're crazy. Really. Those canopies do not handle turbulence at all well, are prone to collapsing, can't handle rear riser input (flattening of the trim) very well either. Wrong wrong choice all round. ciel bleu, Saskia

Newby Starting out...need equipment advice
dragon2 replied to HoldtheIce's topic in Gear and Rigging
There's plenty of threads about cold weather gear, I personally love my warmsuit form Rainbow (Germany) they are the best ever. Not cheap though and not on ebay Ask your instructors and also see what every one else wears. ciel bleu, Saskia -
Questionable tandem harness - how dangerous was this?
dragon2 replied to poser's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Standard joke thing. If you had interfered, you'd have either really made the student nervous (a SKYDIVER thinks this is dangerous too?) or made a lot of fun of for falling for it. Now whether this joke is appropriate or not depends on who it was played with and on who you ask, you could just ask the DZO about it but not likely you're gonna make a difference there,, esp. if you're not a TM yourself. If you continue to skydive you'll likely see more TM/student interaction like that, best is to stay out of it. ciel bleu, Saskia -
Guess I wear that 8kg of lead for 100kg TM and 100+kg passenger all for nuthin' then..... ciel bleu, Saskia

Did you notice we have a whole wingsuit forum here..? Yes you can go straight to a (beginner) wingsuit when you're ready to go wingsuit. No a tracksuit won't help you much, save your money for jumps. Unless you're wanting to BASE later on, forget the tracksuit. Jump on your belly with other people, take docks, learn how to dive and stop to a formation and track like hell at the end of every jump, go try some sitflying, work on your landing accuracy every jump. Most importantly is to GO JUMP, a lot, get those 200 jumps in in 1.5 years max then you're current so you got a better change of a wingsuit instructor giving you the go-ahead. ciel bleu, Saskia

You can't just burn a avi file to a dvd and expect a stand-alone dvd player to play it, as you found out. Take a look at a store-bought movie dvd in your pc, it's got quite the file structure, plus the files are basically mpg files not avi. So how do you get all that? That's what encore is for. In PP4, select the timeline you want to export, then go to file > adobe dynamic link > send to encore. Once the project is open in encore, you can just hit 'burn to dvd' (will give an error message that you can ignore) or do stuff like make a looping video, insert a menu, add more timelines, etc. ciel bleu, Saskia

Well yes, that's what you get for doing CRW It's funny though, the looks on people's faces sometimes, with canopy and/or risers/toggles sticking out, toggles attached to mudflaps, knives EVERYWHERE, etc. Although in my experience most people do ASK before touching, at least they ask ONCE ciel bleu, Saskia

Pin Checks and Other Manuvering with the Door Open
dragon2 replied to champu's topic in Safety and Training
Elaborate please? Where is "over here" and what are the gear check SOPs? over here is switzerland, generally europe i think! check your reserve-cable is running free,, check your PC being cocked and stowed properly, cables of three rings are where they're supposed to be. check your AAD. Don't know about that. In the UK pre-flight pinchecks BY OTHERS are mandatory AFAIK. Here in The Netherlands, while a pincheck is not mandatory for non-students/non-student gear, a lot of the FS4 teams I've jumped with or been in the plane with certainly give oneanother a pincheck (with the door still closed). As a cameraflyer, I especially think that's a good practice, as i don't fancy a canopy coming at me in freefall/in the door and I don't fancy my own stuff creeping out while on the step=near the tail. Now these are all experienced jumpers that I trust around my gear. Otherwise I'll only ask for a pincheck if I think something may have moved that shouldn't. ciel bleu, Saskia -
"Can't get it to work" means what exacly? Please describe the steps you take and what does and what does not work and if not working means an error message, computer hangs, crappy video on the dvd, what? I'm presuming you're using PP CS4 since you shoot AVCHD. That may be your problem right there, use a AVCHD project not a HDV project if that's what you're doing. You also don't say where you're from, a CX100 can be for PAL regions or for NTSC regions, which do you have? Generally once you finish your timeline, you send it to encore using dynamic link and then I think (can't check that for you right now) that encore knows the settings to use as it uses the settings from the PP project. AVCHD/HDV is widescreen by nature, i'd keep it that way, so what you're burning should end up as DV widescreen if you want to burn to a regular dvd and playback on a regular DVD player. ciel bleu, Saskia

What's the problem? If your kid wants to jump, come to The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, etc etc etc. Only problem I have with this is if said child isn't really willing but pushed by parents, had that happen once but kid was a foreigner (he's a dropzone kid but not at our DZ), didn't speak English either, and we didn't quite catch his nervousness. Don't feel good about that one, although his dad did, but usually kids are a absolute total blast to video. ciel bleu, Saskia

Bussloo The Netherlands Swooop Comp Aug 28 & 29

I wouldn't just go out and try stuff like this with a) another newbie and b) non-CRW canopies. Non-CRW canopies have cascaded A-lines, non-Dacron lines and trailing pilotchutes and bridles. I'd stick with flying close and at max bumping endcells. For more than that, get coaching for the 2 of you for sure (just make it happen, either get a CRW jumper to come to you or go out to another DZ) and jump more suitable canopies. ciel bleu, Saskia
-
That idea is called a terts/tersh/tertiary reserve (bigger than a pilotchute, much smaller than a round reserve). Been in use by CRWdawgs for a long time. System can solve problems (I know at least 2 jumpers who are alive today because of a terts) and it can CAUSE a lot of problems hence not many people jump with one. ciel bleu, Saskia

I shoot without a tripod or anything else, handheld. So now I have to open the screen and use that, instead of the viewfinder, which is harder because of the sun glare, and because the camera is further away from my body. I found it hard this way to get the same steady footage I'm used getting over the years, especially with the camera zoomed in all the way but also with panning. ciel bleu, Saskia
-
You also might want to consider a Fusion. I've jumped all these canopies, with most of my jumps on spectres and safires. Right now I own a pilot 124 and a fusion 120, the fusion is comparable to a sabre2: more HP than the pilot by far, and hence of the 2 I prefer the pilot for wingsuiting, but the fusion is a great canopy and cheaper than a sabre2 and more consistant openings too. ciel bleu, Saskia

Neither. I'd look for a cheap FS suit to start with, since if you're smart you'll be spending most of your first 100 or so jumps on your belly. If you decide you like belly, then go for a custom competition-type FS suit with all the bells and whistles if you want. If however you decide you like freefly, or CRW or swooping or whatever better, you'll still want to keep a cheap FS suit around in your closet but you can buy a good freefly suit later, or get a 2nd hand one (might be hard to find a "modern" one - slick, tight, with grips - 2nd hand though). ciel bleu, Saskia

So last weekend we had the yearly Bussloo swoop comp. I always film these, used to with a VX2100, A1, last year a HC5. So this year, my HC5 was gate-cam as I brought the box+quickrelease for that. I was filming with my CX105 (as was another Danish jumper), standing out in the water as usual. Crap, what was I thinking. No #$%^ viewfinder on the CX105! Sun on the water and sometimes even the wind making it difficult for me to keep the camera steady and the jumper where I want him in the screen, having to hold the camera away from my body and with open screen. Now one swoopcomp a year might be a small reason to hang onto my HC5, but I'm considering it Video here. ciel bleu, Saskia
