Airtec has had more cases like that. How about this: one of our very experienced camera jumpers ends up with a 2 out on a demo jump. Camera shows his alti with a high-enough pull altitude. Jumper receives a letter from Airtec saying they examined the unit, he screwed up and pulled too low, "operator error". Get this, the unit was never sent to Airtec it was still in his rig ciel bleu, Saskia

Too lazy to look it up but there's a thread about following tandems under canopy and landing with them. ciel bleu, Saskia

Using a flexible cable to close the container instead of a pin
dragon2 replied to autoset's topic in Gear and Rigging
Such a system already exists, it's called a flexpin. All our tandem rigs have it, and of course the S/L rigs. A total mal is still possible: if too much tension is applied the cable gets kinked into the grommet and may lock. ciel bleu, Saskia -

The safest and IMO best method is an integrated visor with a square on it. Next best thing is a decent ringsight, but these can be very hazardous. I've seen some really snag-prone setups here and there For newbies and for people doing inside video, why would you add a ringsight to the mix. And not all experienced videographers use a ringsite either and still shoot good video. For newbies, having a ringsight doesn't mean you can suddenly shoot good video if you couldn't before! For most people, I think the old paper a*hole is the best and certainly the safest solution. ciel bleu, Saskia

I know horseback riding is at the top of the list of sports-with-the-most-injuries, along with volleyball and basketball. The total NUMBER of injuries is much greater, but so is the number of participants, and the injuries are generally not as serious. So depending on how you want to read these stats, yeah it's more dangerous. ciel bleu, Saskia

We have the category rules here, there are numerous threads about it on dropzone.com. Nothing to do with Icarus categories, these are our national rules. According to your total jumpnumbers and currency you fall into a certain category, which then tells you which canopy types you're allowed to jump, at which sizes and at what max wingloading. I don't know which "page" you're refeering to but here's the total tring (in Dutch of course but should be fairly easy to make sense of). Much better

If you're now a cat 4 jumper, you can't go to a 150 because of the wingload Up to 1.5, you'd hit 1.6. Should've stayed with the vengeance ciel bleu, Saskia

Nope. Not safely. ciel bleu, Saskia

One of our cameraguys is selling his katana; it opens WAY too slow to stay with tandems. Also I don't like jumping my diablo for FS4 as that one opens way too slow - I end up right between the sabres. So too-slow openings are not always a good thing for a camera person. Don't know if all katana's open this slow, haven't jumped one myself yet. But it's way slower than th vengeances, spectres etc we have here. ciel bleu, Saskia

How did you rig the D50? IR I presume? ciel bleu, Saskia

Usually you jump without image stabilisation on anyway. It shows if it's on, and even worse you may get vignetting on a pc (though not on a tv) from the image stabilisation. On the ground, sure, in the air, I don't like it. Although I'm lucky enough that mine does not vignette when turned on, I hate it when people hand over footage for the end of day tape and they have the dark corners. So who gives a damn which brand has which as long as it can be turned OFF. About Canon videocameras in general, I don't know anybody who still jumps one, after problems with autofocus and just quitting. Sony is still the way to go. Like others have said, for stills, buy a stills camera. Why are you set on sidemount anyway? Topmount is better for a lot of purposes and also for your neck. And is way easier to get camera's for these days ciel bleu, Saskia

I always had success using off-brand batteries, but some of my batteries do not work on other's camera's. Some physically do not fit, some cameras simply refuse non-sony batteries. But on the whole, I stick with off-brands. ciel bleu, Saskia

Read my reply to him above. Other costs: repack+yearly check, SB for the AAD cutter location change on Atoms > 1994, just to name a few. ciel bleu, Saskia

Yup it sounds like a good price. Provided the rig fits you right and you're not too heavy (155 reserve). Who're you're shopping with? Have you checked out Eric at Skydivesupplies, Teuge yet, he has a lot of 2nd hand starter rigs. To the others, don't forget prices are way higher here, and to Vincent, it's no use trying to ask mostly Americans about European prices ciel bleu, Saskia

Funny that, a real report gets buried in an FXC thread and all the alleged incidents get lots of threads. I totally missed that one. ciel bleu, Saskia

But, my original question was, is it possible to determine distance, given focal length and size of object? ciel bleu, Saskia

Here is a hint - something about "slowing down". Hard opening or collision? Ummmm, you decide... I almost broke my back last summer after a hard opening, ended up with "just" a couple of bruised ribs. So I'm pretty nervous about hard openings. So I need to adjust how I fly and open, pronto. ciel bleu, Saskia

Yeah I realised I screwed up too, should've slowed down sooner so I could deploy at 4.5k instead of 2 secs later. And kept her in sight. Since for me she did come out of nowhere (and she was in my group) of course I screwed up. Just have no clue about how exactly this happened... Was a wake-up call for me too The whole point of this competition was for people to learn a lot, that also goes for the coaches and the camera people ciel bleu, Saskia

Any way to calculate how close this was? Besides "too close for my comfort"... At 2:30 in the video you see my canopy opening after an FS3 jump, fortunately it opened harder (if a lot wackier) than usual. I opened slightly lower than usual because I wanted to slow down a bit first. The girl came out of nowhere. Apparently she had been warned a few times the day before about tracking further but I didn't know that (this was not "my" team) otherwise I'd have kept her in view. She has a good track but likes to pull high/is nervous to pull lower. Hopefully she is now more nervous of doing this again! http://www.paracentrumteuge.nl/component/option,com_weblinks/task,view/catid,2/id,59/ For some reason I took a picture too. Original image, taken with 20mm lens on a Nikon so 30mm when compared to 35mm. Too bad it doesn't have my shadow on it... http://www.12000ft.com/images/_DSC3522.JPG Canopy: I'm guessing a 170. Video: .45 lens, slightly zoomed in to match with stills. ciel bleu, Saskia

What should i look for in a crew rig???
dragon2 replied to C.McKinley's topic in Canopy Relative Work
Don't own a lightning anymore, but used to jump a sequential trim 126. Also jumped sequential 143, rotation 126 and sequential 126 with extra links to trim it steeper. Of all these, the rotation 126 was the easiest to land, esp with 8kg of lead, but all were absolutely doable. ciel bleu, Saskia
