Started as a firefighter when I was 19 (because I was 19 and didn't have anything better to do). Became an EMT shortly thereafter. Changed careers for awhile to chase $$. Learned the hard way that money wasn't everything, and came back. Now I work as an EMT and go to Paramedic school. The hours are too long, the pay is a joke, and no one ever says "thanks". Patients are loud, smelly, and they bleed, spit, and puke on you. Here's me chiming in.... There's a silver lining to this dark cloud! Kids love ambulances (and cruisers and fire engines)! Last week, I pulled alongside a car at a stoplight and all the kids started jumping around and making the "horn gesture" with their hands. I blew the horn, then rolled the window down to say hello. A little small talk, then the big question - where are your seatbelts?! Everyone sat right down and the older kids buckled in the youngest. Mom gave an embarassed smile and wave and drove slowly away. In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
