  1. Is so out of control. It's simply shocking... We are all engines of karma
  2. Fred clearly has a well developed opinion. I read several of his articles today. While I don't agree with everything he's saying, nor do I disagree. We are all engines of karma
  3. I just read a synopsis of the Nobel winners in economics. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/business/economy/13nobel.html?hp I think it's safe to say there isn't common agreement on "economic engines" for the worlds' societies. I'd like to "find" a different system than capitalism for America, but one that still emphasizes personal responsibility, hard work, nuclear family, and other traditional American values, including patriotism. I don't know what this system is, so I'm really looking for ideas here. Having made a living in the NYC financial area for the last 15 years, I can see capitalism's warts. I am convinced that capitalism is the best system available in practice today. But, it's not a level playing field. Either through government intervention (e.g., qualified investor designation), or long term personal business relationships on the street, especially at the dealer level. Capitalism, as practiced in America, can be improved upon, IMO. But, it must come from corporate governance, not federal governance. I'd also like to start finding political candidates in America who are country first, political party second. I am not interested in discussing world leadership. I'm an American, our political leaders are sworn to uphold the Constitution, and I expect them to keep America completely sovereign. America is on the verge of facing an unprecedented financial crisis, and our political leaders must not only address this, they must solve it. Ok, long winded introduction. Anybody have ideas out there for me? We are all engines of karma
  4. Well said. I will be quoting that, for a long time to come...
  5. I was raised by an extremely religious, extraordinarily violent, mother. She liked to feel Jesus, and beating the shit out of her kids with a belt was a common way for her to do that. I've broken that cycle, as has my sister. We are all engines of karma
  6. Thanks. Both my parents, and every one in their family worked hard (i.e., my uncles and aunts). It was expected in my culture. No excuses, nor reasons, were accepted for not working hard. It was uniformly applied. We are all engines of karma
  7. Thanks for sharing this. If I can ask this, what was it about your culture that made you push yourself forward? We are all engines of karma
  8. Interesting link. Thanks for posting it. We are all engines of karma
  9. Reggie works in a town called Pleasantville. The kids he deals with are being shipped out of New York City. On an express train, that's about a 45 minute commute, excluding the taxi ride from the Pleasantville train station to the "school". My point is, Reggie doesn't know the neighborhoods/people these kids are growing up in. Nor will the kid or parents know these successful people. This is a great idea, and I've been considering your post since last night. How can Reggie find out the successful people who emerged from the multiple inner city neighborhoods he's dealing with? 11. I ordered the book for Reggie yesterday. Thanks very much for the recommendation. We are all engines of karma
  12. As long as it is taught in proper context. America was not the only country doing this. Likewise, you didn't see white cotton farmers running around in Africa rounding up slaves. It was blacks themselves that were selling other blacks into slavery. Look at what is still going on in Africa today. We are all engines of karma
  13. I think he's the top Muslim in Egypt. We are all engines of karma
  14. Good post! We are all engines of karma
  15. The kids that Reggie deals with literally do not have parent figures in their life. The only role models they have are prostitutes and drug dealers. It's a nasty cycle. For 300 years, slave owners in our country and others would deliberately sell the mother and father away from their kids. Some familial lines are still struggling with this legacy. 16. It's how Reggie described his struggle... We are all engines of karma
  17. I friend of mine works at a "school" where troubled inner city youths get sent. He's a very compassionate man, who cares a great deal about these kids. His biggest challenge is getting not only the kids themselves to value education so they can realize the options that are available to them, but even more so getting their parents to value their kids education. He finds that a constant struggle. Any one have any ideas they could share with him re: dealing with parents who have little education? Right now, the role models for most of these kids are prostitutes and drug dealers. We are all engines of karma
  18. I'm proud to be American. I'm also registered as an independent (for a very long time now). Both the Republican and Democratic party have failed our country. We are all engines of karma
  19. Just another meaningless comment from a professor at North Chicago State. That's what I expect from you, and you meet that expectation every time. We are all engines of karma

  22. Don't encourage professors from North Chicago State. They might not know what to do with themselves. We are all engines of karma
  23. 14k at the Ranch I have a masters in ChE. I can think for myself, even though the professor from North Chicago State doesn't think so. We are all engines of karma
  24. Including our elected political leaders? One of the things that drives me nuts at this point in my life is no one seems to agree on "the numbers". Which numbers do we trust? We are all engines of karma
