My brother lives in northern part of Mindanao Island. When I checked the distance (how the crow flies because you can't get into a car and actually drive between the islands) from Ormoc, Philippines to Balingasag, Philippines it is approximately 300 miles. So they definitely sustained some high winds and lots of rain, but does not appear they were close enough to get the full impact of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
