Hey TG, just what the heck are you doing in the BASE forum? Hope things are going well for ya, drop me a PM. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Really cool story! Hey Nick, can you email me at ted_biggs@yahoo.com (or PM me through DZ.com messaging)? I tried sending you an email at the address in your profile and it was bounced back. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

I'm with Kris, I'd bet money it was a stoner (or stoners). Funny coincidence though. Heh. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

You hit the nail on the head. The big difference is that we voluntarily place ourselves into a very dangerous situaion. There are two points where I really feel the "butterflies". The first point is where I actually start climbing out onto the rail. I guess it has to do with the act of placing yourself into a very vulnerable situation. Of course the second is actually initiating the jump. When you push off, you're doing everything that your mind has been trained over the years NOT to do. You're doing things which go totally against instinct. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Hey 311, you got a keeper there. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Lessee.... Ex-wife threatened me with divorce if I took up BASE (I didn't until after we were divorced, for different reasons). Parents *really* don't like it, but pretty much begrudgingly accept it. And it's not like my Dad can complain much... he races cars. Most of my friends think I'm nuts... but they're still friends. One thing I did tell my parents was that if I die BASE jumping or skydiving: a. I want an ash jump; b. There better not be any lawsuits. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

What Ann says. You do NOT want to live in Katy if you plan on working anywhere other than Katy. That is, unless you enjoy 1 hour+ commutes one-way. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Anyone have any thoughts on the usefulness of some sort of concerted lobby to Burton to let them know exactly what they are sponsoring and the dangers these people present to: 1. Themselves; 2. The BASE community; and 3. Burton's reputation (especially if they burn in). If these guys are as full of themselves as they appear to be, they probably blew a bunch of smoke to Burton, who wouldn't know any better. Seems like "educating" Burton might not be a bad idea (but I'm not always the most politically savvy person). - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Yo Tom, Is this the thread you're referring to? - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

If you hadn't prefaced that post with the background, I would have sworn that that exchange was a parody. I'm literally slack-jawed that there are people out there with attitudes like that. And unfortunately, it's people like that who are going to ruin things for the rest of us. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

This is a good question, one I've sort of been wondering myself since I'm trying my hand at videoing right now. One thing I think I can say with a fair amount of confidence is that you shouldn't show anybody's face unless they tell you it's OK. This goes hand-in-hand with the "no-naming" convention. Showing film of jumps at illegal objects is still sort of confusing to me. I see lots of dawn/day/dusk footage of A jumps where I personally am familiar with the view from above and can name it instantly. But it's hard to get A jump footage without getting at least a *little* of the surrounding area in view. Particularly the support buildings and driveways below. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Well, my folks just moved down to that area recently and I can literally see that tower's lights blinking from my bedroom window (when I visit). 460 & I tried our darndest to get hold of locals but couldn't. I didn't want to fsck up and burn it (though it sounds like that's difficult to do) so I was just extra careful & didn't mess with the 'vader or anything. I knew it's reputation so I was really hoping to hook up with some locals when I went out there to jump. To my amazement, nobody was there so I wound up doing a solo. Just have to keep trying to get hold of them. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Depends on what I'm pulling out. If I pull out my 9mm Taurus, I can usually shoot accurately about 20 yards or so. If I pull out my .243 Ruger, I can shoot accurately to around 300 yards. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

I like that! - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Wow. So many to choose from. My double-bounce after a botched hook turn (miraculously nothing broken... just a sore knee) would probably be my most memorable "oopsie". My most memorable BASE jump would have to me my solo off of a South Florida A that is named after an interstellar phenomenon. It was the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had. My most memorable skydive is probably some recent head-down big ways I did with the Gravity Rats, Levin, Paul, Kimmy, Derek Curtis & Ramon. God those were fun. Thanks guys! - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

I'll be repeatedly jumping a legal span out in the western US. Can't wait! - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Because it's fun as hell! In my very short time in the sport I've collected so many fascinating experiences. Some funny, some scary, but all treasures. Same goes for the people I've met. And, quite frankly, I've never engaged in an activity that causes one to reflect on the meaning of life and one's mortality quite like BASE. Maybe I reflect on the mortality issue a little TOO much when I get wasted... ... but there is a definite philosophical element for me. It's very personal, but very meaningful, and impossible to describe to others... even other BASE jumpers. It's something that is felt, not spoken... kinda Zen now that I think about it. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

... I got divorced. Well, it's not quite that straightforward, but that's what gave me the green light to start. When I started skydiving I watched Chronicles III. I saw the BASE clips and thought that looked like way too much fun. Unfortnatly, my ex drew the line and made me promise not to BASE jump. Welp, I still watched clips, I lurked the BASE Board on & off, and lusted to do Bridge Day (even scheming ways of "being out of town on business" during BD weekend). I'd see BASE rigs at the DZ from time to time and they always had this sort of mystical quality to them. Well, last August the promise was no longer an issue so I got hold of 460, started ground crewing and it sort of snowballed from there. My first jump was BD 2002 and I've been pretty actively jumping ever since. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

That's because once they learn a little more about the sport, you go from being a fascinating daredevil to a complete lunatic. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

This wouldn't be off Fistfull of F-111 by any chance would it? - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Those of you who have known me for a while know that my ex forbade me from BASE jumping while we were married. Now that the marriage isn't an issue anymore I have to decide what to do with my wedding ring. I've decided that it has to be on a BASE jump. I'm just not sure which one. My very first BASE jump was last year's Bridge Day.... 9 days before my divorce was final. So there's sort of that "anniversary" element going out there. On the other hand, I've been dwelling about this WAY too much. I'm wondering if ditching it this coming Memorial Day weekend might not be a good way of making the symbolic gesture while getting it behind me quicker. There's an added symbolism given the fact that it would be over the Snake River. That makes it appealing as well. So whaddaya think? Where should I ditch it? And NO I'm not gonna hock it! - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Are you jumping a pin rig? I was having consistent off-headings to the left. After a lot of experimentation & packing video-watching it turns out I was closing my pin rig in such a manner that it was distorting the pack job to favor a left-hand opening. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
