I wouldn't jump either of them... but I know people that use both and are totally happy with them. To each his own. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

I don't see that as a cop-out at all. Do we really need a bunch of no/late/high flare minor injury threads to tell people that they should flare at the appropriate time. That's kinda a given in my mind. I don't know a single person that has never dicked up a landing, so we should all be aware of what happens when you screw up and how to prevent it. Now if it was a case of a new jumper stabbing the brakes at 20 feet, then not holding the flare, failing to PLF, and face-planting into ground because the canopy dove to repressurize when they let up, I might be more inclined to post it since perhaps someone new might learn something from it, i.e. a canopy dives before returning to full flight from full brakes. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Well, not everyone who skydives bothers to post here. In the last week I have jumped at 3 different dropzones and saw or heard of: 1. A potentially fatal canopy collision near miss 2. A hyper-extended minor knee injury 3. Back injury None of which were posted here. Probably because there was no new lesson to be learned. To sum up what could have prevented each one is: 1. Don't open in a cloud without better break-off separation. 2. Don't flare too high and then reach for the ground with your foot. 3. Don't land on your butt without an adequate flare. Cheers ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Allocate a whole day of jumping to just doing H&Ps with a coach and get video. I know I still sometimes have the "did not complete the flare" problem when I land straight in. Must be because I love surfing across the grass. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Where's your first jump certificate?

Mine's stuffed in an old copy of the SIM that is somewhere in my apartment. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! -
When is the right time for buying a gear?
hookncrater replied to jigneshsoni's topic in Safety and Training
I waited until I had about 50 jumps and was down to roughly a 1:1 w/l before I bought my own gear. I went with used gear so I wouldn't care as much if I got it dirty and to save some money. If I could go back in time, I would have bought a new custom rig instead of a used one for comfort reasons and put the same used canopies/AAD in it. Not a recommendation, just my experience. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! -
Q: How do you prevent a Sabre from opening hard? A: Buy a Safire! Seriously, with all the people that have been maimed by those canopies due to hard openings, it continues to amaze me that people bother to jump them. My advice, buy a better canopy... you'll spend less time obsessing over packing, less time nursing sore muscles, and more time in the air. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Push the Envelope~Think Tank

My vote is for high-G freefly as discussed quite some time ago here. 2 or more freeflyers with straps attaching each other doing high speed orbitz and spins, kinda like the NASA multi-axis trainer on crack, but in freefall. You could call it veeflying, as in vomit. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! -
I think the chance you are going to hurt yourself just increased significantly! I'd shelve the Nitron, dump the Sabre (crap), and get another 190 like a Safire2 or a Sabre2 instead. edit: just to clarify, a Nitron 170 will fly faster and respond faster to input making it a higher performance canopy than a Sabre 190. It will have better flare since it is an elliptical and it will open better since it is a superior design to the Sabre, but at your experience level you are asking for trouble. My $0.02. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Canopy Repair – What to do in the interim?
hookncrater replied to Lostinspace's topic in Gear and Rigging
You could take the time to try a canopy other than a PD... If you like light-ellipticals like the Sabre 2 you could try: Icarus Safire 2 Precision Fusion Big Air Sportz Lotus They all have demo programs (probably with a shorter wait than PD). Do a search, Phreezone had a good thread about it some time ago. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! -
Sabre 135 w/ 25 jumps ~ 1.4 WL
hookncrater replied to Kimblair13's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's almost the exact same story of a friend of mine. He ended up becoming a pro-swooper amongst other things though. Today, even though he never got hurt, he admits it was kinda stupid at the time. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! -
I think someone will have to make a strong case for me to buy Michelin tyres again. That is just pathetic IMO esp since Michelin was previously warned to not sacrifice safety for performance. I'm going to go back to Pirelli on my motorcycles and probably Bridgestone for my sports car next time. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

I know what I'd do... travel between Elsinore, Eloy, and Deland to get the best weather possible for each season, temporarily ignore the being an instructor stuff for a bit and just become a safe, proficient, multi-disciplined skydiver, and then when you feel you are ready hit the coach, AFF-I and tandem courses as time permits. You are probably going to need more money though... you gotta factor in all the beer you have to buy + lodging & food as well. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

sounds like you need to talk to your instructors... ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

I was jumping with a single AFF-I on level 2, poised solo exit on 4, 360° turns on 5, flips on level 6, and my level 7 was basically a fun-jump with no requirements, other than to pull stable at proper altitude, since I mowed through all the levels in two days with no repeats. I credit a killer group of instructors for my success, along with their great debriefs and patience. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Like Zen said, it is usually due to being rigid, just arch and relax. I didn't do tunnel until I had like 50 jumps, most of which were dedicated RW coach jumps, so I can't relate to being a student in the tunnel, but this is very common in the air. To quote a cheesy movie, "...let the air sculpt your body position." ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Let me guess... California somwhere? I've had to do the video the signature/speech thing before in SoCal but I never had to watch the Bill Booth video except before my first tandem in another state though. I've only been to about a dozen or so DZs, but they are all a little different in my limited experience. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it! -
Ravens only have a (insert negative adjective here) flare if you overload them. I know plenty of pros that use them (within said max exit weight) and have never complained about poor performance. I have even seem them swooped farther than I can do with my main. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Never heard of that one before. What does it entail? ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!

Get a Mirage with an M5 container size if you want versatility and quick delivery. They fit most 190s without much hassle packing, can go down to a 170 no prob and maybe even an airlocked 150 with a shorter closing loop (ask your rigger first though). They fit a PD176R snug and can get a PD160R in there too. Best part, 4 week delivery time and excellent resale if/when you sell it. In fact, I know of a couple in that size range that are for sale, some in the classifieds and one a dropzone I jump at infrequently. ________________________________________________________________________________ when in doubt... hook it!
