GM pays back government loans from US, Canada
SkyDekker replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Not to the extent a completely failed system would have hurt. At some point Americans will have to face te fact that taxes will have to be raised. I pity the fool (yes I used to love the A Team), who is going to have to stand up and do that. -
And if you leave industry in charge of itself, they will do anything possible to make the largest amount of money in the shortest amount of time, with total disregard for the country or the society they do business in. So, who then should do the regulation?
-
So you don't know, but you do know for sure that it is all political and there is some sinister plot behind this?
-
yes, Canada is proof. No, but rules requiring minimum downpayments would. Rules on affordability would. Rules against financial instruments nobody understands and are almost completely unregulated....would. There are three rules that would have prevented an immense amount of difficulty. (and quite frankly the first two would have largely prevented the need for the third in this case). I would love to see how those people think the failure of AIG would have played out.
-
Wouldn't those be good things? Great way to instantly find out if people are so completely different from me that I would likely not enjoy their company. Would save a lot of time and trouble.
-
Except that those very light hands almost completely destroyed you. Almost all those industries have shown that if left to their own regulation would be detrimental to a very large part of the population. Or would actually completely destroy the country.
-
CYA isn't specific to politics, it is every day life and certainly very pervasive in business and military life as well. Who asked for the charges? (And since one has now been acquitted, doesn't that mean the system works perfectly?)
-
I maintain the same. Since they did a piss poor job making rules, the financial system was brought to ruin. Private industry just did what it always does....make as much money as quickly as possible.
-
That's an interesting way to phrase the concept.... it's not illegal if you don't get caught
-
I don't see that. Which other industries are being taken over? The lack of good regulation in the financial system brought the US to near total collapse. I am convinced that without intervention, the US would have been ruined (and with it many other nations). I think it is pretty understandable there is a drive to better regulate. Since basic human nature would swing the pendulum to the other extreme, you will have to deal with over-regulation for a while. Like when your mom catches you with your hand in the cookie jar.....then you have to live without cookies for a while.
-
Have you ever thought there might be a difference between more and better? Better regulation made a huge difference in Canada. (and that is true even if it isn't on youtube)

Maybe there was subliminal seal messaging in Gore's movie........

I don't think people can fathom what a completely wiped out financial system would mean. I certainly can't, but I do know it would mean the end of pretty much all foreign investment in the US. The greenback would be completely worthless, plus with the financial system gone, almost every body's savings and wealth would have evaporated. Without access to capital, industry in the US would have ground to a halt. Without access to money, the military machine would have come to a halt. Plus, how many soldiers would continue fighting when pay cheques stopped coming, or when supplies can no longer be flown to areas of operation? The list goes on and on..... -
Much stricter oversight and regulation in the Canadian financial system made a drastic difference in the severity of the current financial crisis. Specifically the stricter rules on mortgages. Do you have a youtube for that explanation too?
-
Don't agree, those people had other options than the investments they made. There are no guarantees.
-
I think people overthink this way too much. I think it really is much simpler. The financial crisis was due to a lack of regulation and oversight. So when shit hit the fan, the pendulum swung to the other side, which is where it is now. Nothing sinister, just basic human nature. The same thing parents do with their kids. They give them more and more freedom, then when they realized they fucked up, they curtail all their kids' freedom.

What's the benefit of carrying concealed as opposed to open carry?
-
I'm sorry, but if you feel so strongly about that, maybe invading Iraq under false pretense would not have been the smartest course of action? Don't you think that action incensed slightly more people than this trial?
-
So exactly which organization or political person/entity orchestrated this in your opinion? Who was it that told the detainee to complain, then told the superior to give them what amounts to a written warning, and then convinced the SEALS to ask to be courts martial? That's a lot of strings and the cooperation of people exactly opposed to the political agenda of whatever group or person orchestrated this. Any publicity that came from this is due to the fact the SEALS asked to be courts martial. If they had not taken that action, there would have been absolutely no media attention to this situation. Hence, if in this case the process is being abused to make political points, it can only have come from the right wing.

Stupidity may come in to play with regards to the inability to differentiate between singular and plural. -

I think the dog piling of a person who stands up for a friend and otherwise has nothing to do with the OP's issues is stupid. -
If you look at the sentence I quoted, you will see I was not talking about gun registration. In the quoted section you stated you only need laws that take effect after you hurt some one etc. I mentioned that there are many laws that are aimed solely at prevention and as such do not fall under the laws you brought forward as the only ones necessary. hence, I asked if you thought that those laws, aimed at prevention, needed to be taken off the books as well. Do you think you can answer now?
-
Why are you asking me? You wrote the sentence....go read your own post if you can't remember what you wrote, it's all right there. It's like arguing with a meth head.......
-
Then what about building codes? Health and Saftey laws? There are tons of laws aimed purely at prevention of pain and suffering. Do you believe all those laws should be taken off the books?
