    FEAR? No Fear!

I have a couple local friends who are also saying I should be able to handle a F3. Tomorrow I'm going to head out and sit on a couple, just get a feel to see if I'm comfortable with the weight of the bike. If it's something I think I can muscle around at low speeds I'll probably pick one up. When I was 17 I dropped a Harley(was on it maybe 10 mins) that was just more than I could handle, not so much power, just too damn heavy to control. But a friend at work assures me that a F3 is much much lighter than an average Harley.

    FEAR? No Fear!

Heh, a 200+ pound man on a 380 pound bike is just going to make a loud "splat" against a 2 ton car. What? A 600cc monster that'll do 0-60 in 3 seconds and max out at 160 wasn't enough speed for ya?

    FEAR? No Fear!

Damn Merrick, that's a mean Gixxer to have as your first bike. I was initially going to get a F3, then read up a bit and felt that a 500cc would be less likely to get away from me. I don't want to have to worry about having too much power underneath me for my skills. I just wanna know I can open her up and let it fly. Might still get an F3 if I can't find a decent EX500 though. They're a sweet looking bike and the Ft Lauderdale shops have about 20 used ones for sale. Edited by MarkM on 3/15/01 01:02 PM.

    FEAR? No Fear!

Hey wingnut, nice wheels. I'm looking at buying a EX500 for my first ride in a couple of weeks, although I might go 250 if I can't find a 500 at a decent price. Yeah, a little Ninja that can top out over 100mph and accelerate to 60 faster than most sports cars is nothing to laugh at. Personally I prefer the scared shitless shirts over the no fear ones. I think they more accurately portray the sport.
  6. I had a brother that died when I was 16 that I had always looked up to(he was 28). Well about a year back when I was 29 I remembered him saying how he always wanted to try skydiving. He never had a chance so I guess I went for him. That and I was at a bored time in my life
  7. I'm with Cacophony. I've done "cut away and pull" so many times, in practice, it'd be damn hard to change that habit at a hundred and change and a half mile up. Yeah, it might take me a half second longer. Yeah, it might have a .01% higher risk of an entanglement. But I know I can pull off that little trick no matter what kind of stress I'm in, and that's worth something.
  8. Don't forget about the good old SL method: Tie a student to a rope, throw them from the plane and if they live, pass em.

    Cost of a DZ

Get a decent 182. Find some little grass runway out in the middle of nowhere you can launch/land the plane from(store the plane there, or store it somewhere else and just run it there). Get a pilot. SL training is probably a cheaper student program to get going than AFF, especially with 182's.
  11. Well said. And there are a class of people who are drawn to the sport exactly for that reason, just because you might not see the validity of performing hook turns yourself doesn't invalidate them. And if you don't ever want to see someone "burn in", leave the sport now. We all like to sit around and talk about how safe this sport is, but in truth it's extremely hazardous. Within a couple months of jumping I saw a man dislocate his leg and watched my instructor barely deploy reserve through a wrap with a student. Stay with the sport long enough and you'll see people hurt and odds are you'll lose friends.

    Tax season...

I have zero idea what "moves" PLF was ragging on, but I couldn't care how you fly. You don't know shit at 18 jumps and anything other than just focusing on getting down in one piece would be pretty stupid IMHO. And that's just an OPINION, we all got em, and they ain't worth a crap.
  13. The above is an attitude that really annoys the hell out of me. It cracks me up that people will throw themselves out of airplanes, but then get all upset when another person hooks in a landing. Yeah, those people really don't need to "push it" and do hook turns. But then you really don't need to jump out of airplanes in the first place, do you? Look in the mirror a little before you get all judgemental on people who do hook turns or maybe don't choose to wear an AAD or even an altimeter.
  14. Just don't ever say to them "Yeah, last weekend I did a four way with a couple guys. It was awesome!"
  15. I think half the "turn" fatalities are accidental, flyers trying to avoid something or get back into the wind. One thing I like to remember is that verticle speed kills, not horizontal. I can hit the ground with the wind doing 70mph lateral and PLF out of it with just some bruising. But it's pretty much impossible to take a 20mph verticle hit and bleed that energy off anywhere outside of my body.

Jesus people, put the egos to REST and go cool off for awhile. You're all reading way more into these posts than are there.

I'm with Dove, was self employed for most of last year. So... Not only will I owe taxes for 2000, but I'm still paying off my taxes from 1999

    GOING to FL!!!

The Origional Skydive America (whatever that means) is pretty close to Naples, I think. There's an airport 5 mins north of me in Pompano Beach I'd love to steal some Cessna hours from and use as a DZ for the locals during the week, but it's in the middle of urban sprawl and most DZs seem to be remote as hell. I know everyone is into these twin otter mega-machines, AC'd hangers, local Gods to drool over, etc... but I'd kill for a little Cessna to take me to altitude that was only a few mins from home. I miss my old Indiana DZ that was a single engine plane, a small hanger, and 50 yards of grass to take off and land on. It was a 20 min drive from home. And the really sad thing is that that's the ONLY thing I miss from Indiana.

    GOING to FL!!!

Hey dog, I live in Ft Lauderdale. Your local DZ options are Skydive Miami in Homestead and Skydive America in Pahokee. Skydive Miami might be physically closer, but you have to take '95 down through the Miami area to get there, which is a bitch. I can make Skydive America in a little over an hour by taking 95 south to 595/75 over to 27 north. 75 and 27 both have little traffic so you can really make good time.

    Great Quote

Naw, the bird-man suit guys are judged like skipping stones. It's how many times they bounce and the distance covered from the first bounce to final splat. Putting in a lot of spins really wows the judges too.

Haha, don't sweat it. After they meet me they run straight to Brazil. You're not the only one with the personality of Jerry Lewis in a badly scripted comedy.
