Most of us are pretty sure OJ Simpson is not innocent, even though he was found not guilty in court. (I don't know if Crosby is innocent or guilty of rape, I do know that from the way he is handling this he is guilty of at least being a douche bag.) If one carefully and dispassionately examines all facets of the position he's in, he really has no other practical choice but to stay silent.

    That's the way it ought to be in a truly free society. You're free to be an absolute A$$hat, as long as you don't steal. Freedom of speech requires that you sometimes endure what you find truly offensive. That's one of the prices we pay. This.

    Technical correction here; he was warning the citizens of England. By "us" I was referring to all of modern humanity, who I presume he presumed would be his ultimate audience in the longer term.

    Yours is certainly the right sentiment. And I agree with you that the best fights are perpetual. (Insert apt analogies here>____.) But as I noted above, I've been around long enough to have seen the history, and it's made me cynical... or at least realistic. So yes, we must keep fighting... just don't let the idealism and naivete of those who are younger and newer at it than we are turn it into complacency.

    I'm shocked that any of you guys are shocked. Orwell warned us about this before most of us were born. We've had pervasive government techno-surveillance capacity world-wide for 50 years. The US govt has been doing it domestically since the 1960s to spy on civil rights leaders Vietnam war protestors. And then there's post-9/11; and it's all been tricklin'-down to all the LEOs. What about this surprises anyone? And surprise aside (so we don't just focus on that): do you think we can make it stop? Well, we can't. I remember the push back by the Church Committee and the Carter Administration against the government surveillance mentality and abuses that pervaded the Nixon Administration. The measures were weak, mostly just theater, and short-lived. They certainly died post-9/11. It's a genie, and it's never going back into the bottle.

    Yes, mixed with Karo (corn-sugar) syrup. Helps keep it fresh longer. And ditto re: cutting off the base of the stump. I also cut extra slots in the sides of the stump to help take up the liquid.

That right is granted in the constitution. you're such a strict constructionalist - such a conservative I'd've thought you'd side more with the constitution is a 'living breathing document' crowd. you never know when a true fanatical right winger will come out of the closet.... DOH!! Busted... Actually I am shocked by people suggesting americans should just get deported. Why? Knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal xenophobia against migrants and their pestilent spawn has been part of the human experience, pretty much world-wide, since like forever.

    For a West Wing staff that never really rose to a particularly high level of competence, this is actually a neat little score of political gamesmanship. Of course the Repubs have to object to it (reflexively, and predictably, they already have), and they'll look like dicks for doing so.
