  1. Every generation bitches about how comparatively spoiled the younger generation of kids are, and how overly-permissive the current crop of parents are. It's cliche', and it pre-dates our own lifetimes literally by millenia. I notice you didn't answer the direct question. That's ok. Threads like this about rotten kids and permissive parents are pretty common in this forum. My own observation is that the vast, vast majority of posters who do the most sanctimonious breast-beating about parenting, and whose observations about parenting I find to be the most full of shit, have never been parents themselves. A couple have, but by far most have not. It's anecdotal, but it's good enough for me.
  2. I think your attitude greatly misapprehends what people are trying to say. They're really not saying, or even implying, that kids should be spoiled; nor is spoiling the unintended result. It's more a recognition that a child is vulnerable and should be protected from harm where necessary; that the old "seen and not heard" way of dealing with kids is obsolete; that corporal punishment of children too physically weak to fight back against adults is a last resort and not a presumptively first resort; and that a child's formative years are so special that they are to be cherished and nurtured, and not screwed up. That's how we raised our kids, and today they're the greatest, most responsible young adults I've ever met. So: Please explain what philosophy you have followed in raising your own children?
  3. I'm trying to think of any reason why what somebody does behind closed doors with another consenting adult is anybody else's business. Nope. Can't. I am fine with this if they keep it there As it should be for eveyone But, they would rather stick it in your face Would you rather have a gun stuck in your face or a dick stuck in your face? Careful, it's a trick question. Momma I just killed a man Put a gun against his head Pulled my trigger Now he's dead.
  4. Well, Congress could try, but that would implicate the Constitution, which technically trumps Congress's power to legislate. So it would still be fought over in the courts and decided by judges. The saving constant, of course, is plenty of work for the sharks.
  5. Well, you kind of need at least two federal district judicial findings to disagree with each other, in order to set up standing for the SCOTUS. Absent that, there's no reason for SCOTUS to hear the issue. That's now essentially the case - 2 basically-competing federal trial-court rulings. In any event, federal trial court rulings are generally appealed first to the regional Circuit Court of Appeals. So now we get to see how 2 different Circuit Courts of Appeals deal with this.
  6. The psychology of promoting that any segment of society is special will never groom them to be better in any way; it merely promotes specialness. OK, serious answer. Kids are placed first because evolution of almost all species selects for it.

  8. Chris, Chris, I'm trying to help you here. Look at your post #1. Now look at your post #8. "Communication" might be defined as something more than an ephemeral one-liner that nobody understands, and less than a 3-page treatise that nobody will bother to read. Balance in all things, Grasshopper.
  9. Really? How many jumps on the canopy, and how many jumps on the lineset?
  10. http://www.skydivenrg.com/ weird, huh ? What's weird is they have an opossum that creaks.
  11. Kids are eaten first because they're the most juicy and tender. You're a croc. I'd have thought you'd know this.

  13. Without context, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.
  14. You seem like you're probably an interesting person, but your spinning-up what people say, and the "do you still beat your wife" approach is a real conversation-stopper. Pity.
  15. Yes, because the ghost of Emmett Till implores it to be. That's the short version. As a society, we either get it or we don't. I've lost patience with repeating the long version.
  16. It wasn't programmed for the Alpha prototype.
  17. Marc, I agree with you but, may I add, I think it deals more with action-reaction argument and rational expectation. Did Robertson expect a reaction to his action? Did Disney expect a reaction to their action? If the answers are yes then, yes it is manufactured and each side got what they expected to get. If the answers are no then, each side was blindsided by the reaction and did not expect the fallout. I suspect that each side expected the reaction that came out from their actions therefore, this was all manufactured. Hell, just look at the ratings and the money that is being gained. It is a win-win on both sides. Completely agree on all points
  18. "Many fans asked for my thoughts on the "Duck Dynasty" controversy. They pressed and pressed, but I refused to quack. But I can't duck this issue forever. I don't really care feather someone on a reality show said something about gays that didn't fit the bill. He's entitled to his opinion, even if it's for the birds. But the network also is worried about flocking with its base, so if it feels it should drake him over the coals for making his fowl comments, so be it. So that's migrate opinion." - George Takei George is awesome. And a silly goose.
  19. I then twiddled around with it a couple of times, adjusting a few things that fall into "grey areas" for me. Still quite accurate.
  20. My earlier point being: I doubt most people could possibly care less what either Terry Bradshaw OR Charlie Sheen think about this. Now, if Larry The Cable Guy were to weigh-in on this, him I'd listen to.
  21. People who say they have no grievances. Hey, you know what? - shut up. And move out of my lane.
  22. Bullseye - mostly from where I grew up (especially pronunciation), combined with a couple of terms from where I've spent most of my adult life, and a little bit influenced by my parents, who grew up still elsewhere.
  23. Yeah, that totally turns the debate on its ear.
  24. Not quite. I thing you have to agree it is only the right of mentally competent individuals. I am not sure a 3 year old is mentally competent to bear arms, yet alone a newborn. A birthright by definition is a right you are born with, not grow into. [Joe Philosopher] Everyone is born with the right to defend himself. If a rugrat is sentient enough to grab his rattle and bop the dog in the head when it tries to eat the oatmeal out of the kid's bowl, there you go. [/Joe Philosopher]
