fruce, I picked up the same habit from a rigger that is also a tandem instructor...I was on jump run once (at about 25 jumps) and he did that to me...andI can truthfully say, it changed the skydive...set me at ease and made me feel like someone was there that cared...So yeah, I picked up on it and even if it doesn't set someone else at ease, it helps me...does this count as a superstition?? Hey Zennie, Not to shake ya' up or anything but something ya' might want to consider...Can it be seen from the air?? If ya' have to chop and a pilot can see it, it might make it easier to spot and ya' don't have to go searching too far...if it has a lot of nuetral colors, it may be hard to find...just my $.02...
