  1. I recommend wide risers and big rings. The small stuff looks cool, but few people are going to find any real, non cosmetic benefit from choosing it. It may be easier to pull the slider down over the mini risers, but it is definitely not impossible with the wide risers. For Great Deals on Gear
  2. My first reserve ride was under a Security 26' Lo-Po. weighing (with gear) about 160 lbs, it was not a drastically hard landing by round standards, ending in a reasonably well executed PLF. Nonetheless, to steal a phrase from Tom Clancy, I landed with "a lung emptying thump." I found a square reserve soon after that. Yes, modern gear is definitely easier on the body when used repeatedly. I just can't picture many 4 way teams cranking out 75 loads a week and landing under rounds every jump. For Great Deals on Gear
  3. Or maybe he made his jumps back when 3000 jumps was a lot. You know, back when most every jump ended in a round landing. You haven't skydived until you've landed a round. Anyone who is willing to take that beating 2611 times, well, they've earned some respect from us newbies. For Great Deals on Gear
  4. And one of my all time favorite movies...I wasn't trying to knock it.
  5. I bunch of mistakes and errors in that movie: In the first training dogfight at Mirimar, Jester never actually called "No Joy." When the airboss gets a tray spilled on his shirt outside Viper's office, the top side of the tray clearly says Pepsi. Kelly McGillis has reddish hair in the elevator scene and the "sex" scene (they were filmed later). The wine bottle spins before wine is poured at the dinner date scene. Did you know the original instructor at the real TOPGUN is Charlies older date at the bar?
  6. belly and back. Imagine a being in a T that is front/back sliding so badly you are near horzontal, and tracking accros the sky. Except the arms are more above the head than extended outwards.
  7. Put an ad in the DZ.com classifieds, and you should soon here from several skydivers from Nigeria, or perhaps from there agents here in the US.
  8. I tend to try VLC before anything else, and with most CODECs it works great. Plus it is free for PC or Mac.
  9. I saw video from at least a hundred training jumps when Jimmy and The Freedom of flight were training for nationals. He could go feet first flatter than most can headfirst. It was pretty impressive. For Great Deals on Gear
  10. I completely agree that we cannot have too much information about our gear. But don't you think there is a difference between someone knowing that it can be done, and knowing that they can do it?
  11. There I go again writing without clarity. What I meant is that they should jump a canopy like their reserve (same make/model), not their actual reserve canopy. While I am not certain of Precision's demo policy, I am certain that PD will let you demo reserves in much same way they allow main canopy demos, and I'm pretty sure Aerodyne will let customers try out a particular sized reserve as a main before buying one to be used exclusively as a reserve. While I have demoed canopies from Precision in the past, none of them were reserves. Is this something that Precision offers in their demo program? For Great Deals on Gear
  12. I used to have a Galant that was not supposed to allow the driers door to be locked when it was openand there was a key in the ignition. It worked well, but the switch was so sensitive, shutting the door would sometimes lock the door without even touching the button. Now I just carry two key rings, so that one is always in my pocket. The downside is I have to keep closer track of my keys, because it would be quite easy to leave them somewhere and not notice till quite a bit later.
  13. Uh, Beezy, better get your eyes checked-- that is a picture of two cows. You must be getting old. For Great Deals on Gear
  14. First, standing up your landing is not the best characteristic to define success. A soft landing that ends in a butt slide is a better landing than one on which you land hard on your feet, IMO. Remember, the goal is to avoid injury, not to just look cool. It sounds like you might need to have some of your landings videoed by a good canopy coach to work on your fundamentals. It is really tough to diagnose problems sight unseen. Kudos to you for recognizing there is room for improvement, and actually seeking help. For Great Deals on Gear
  15. I agree that not all reserves are created equal, despite possible being certified under the same TSO standards. But if a jumper overloads his canopy, that jumper should take the time to, at the very least, jump the canopy as a main a few times so there is at least some sense of familiarity with the canopy so any potential performance problems can be anticipated when it is landed as a reserve. If a canopy's performance envelope is wider than advertised, great, but that fact should be verified, and not just assumed. For Great Deals on Gear
  16. That's an unusual cause and effect relationship. For Great Deals on Gear
  17. I liked it overall. The resolution could stand to be better, it loses too much in the compression. I was able to play the Video with VLC instead of WMP, which is a good thing. For Great Deals on Gear
  18. True, but I didn't get the impression that he had been denied access verbally, either. Could be that just didn't show up in the article (or I missed it).
  19. I can even automatically relay a Wi-Fi signal with my laptop, if I choose. Fortunately, this case has not gone to trial. Hopefully the guy will not be found guilty if he was never denied access by the network administrator. It doesn't seem any different from someone being charged with trespassing on land that is not posted.
  20. Okay. Now we're just being paranoid! It's perfectly acceptable to let students pick their own canopy colors without the assistance of an instructor! For Great Deals on Gear
  21. Wow. You actually drive all the way from Texas to Skydive Chicago just to jump? Impressive. As much as I would like to tell you to call me to place an order, more responsible advice would be to wait until you get through student status, and a little beyond before buying your own gear. You and your instructors will have amuch better idea what canopies you are ready for. Agressiveness is an attribute of a pilot, not a parachute. You can fly a "boat" agressively. I'm not recommending you fly agressively, mind you. But if that is your choice, you do not need a special canopy. In fact, a big one is better for new agressive pilots, because, when you screw up (make no mistake, sooner or later you'll blow a landing.) it will hurt a whole lot less. For Great Deals on Gear
