  1. Evading the question? Give a specific example of this "judicial activism" which you and a certain current president seem to believe happens all the time.
  2. What statute would that be? The US Supreme Court decision I remember happened along party lines, not unanimously.
  3. Nate, You do realize that no one is stating otherwise, right?
  4. Not that it changes the meaning of my statement any, but okay.
  5. He appoints them; He is reponsible for their actions. If they were voted in, that would be different, but they are appointed by the President, and remain a part of his branch of government. So if they nscrew up, he is fully responsible.
  6. That is what I said, interpretation is not the same as activism. Unfortunately, GW would like you to believe otherwise. Notice he can 't provide specific examples of judges rewriting laws, either.
  7. That is because ultimately, those were/are Americans in need of help, and so the federal government rightfully should accept most of the reponsibility for the failings in the aftermath. The state and local governments were unable to operate at full efficiency immediately following such a huge storm.
  8. The problem with that logic is that Mississippi residents had to wait far to long for assistance as well. The only way we would not be having this conversation is if none of the three levels of government screwed up, instead of all three.
  9. Who has said anything like that? Could you link the post, please? I can't find a single one. No one said the local and state officials are without responsibility.
  10. Except it happens during most any major natural disaster in the world, which leads me to believe it is natural. I'm sure you have evidence to the contrary, right? Or just empty words?
  11. IMO, no matter who the President is, they are responsible for the actions of their appointees. That responsibility comes with the power to appoint. DHS is a part of the Executive Branch, and as such, the President is responsible for their (lack of) actions. This has nothing to do with who is President.
  12. You are aware that it is the Judicial Branch's job to interpret the law, right? It is not judicial activism; it is what they are supposed to do. It is not wrong, regardless of whether or not the President likes it. It is an important part of the "checks and balances" system.
  13. Not sure, but on Thursday and Friday, as I was driving halfway across the country, listening to various newsstgations, the single common thread was that civilians were still in danger. The head of FEMA repeatedly told an NPR reporter that there were no confirmation of people in need of help at the NO Convention Center, despite the fact there was a live feed from the CC soundly confirming that very fact. Mississippi citizens were wondering when the might receive badly needed assistance. Troop count on the ground was very low still, at that point, several days after Katrina. The governor of LA may have wasted 24 hours, but FEMA wasted far more time than that. That doesn't justify the LA governor's delay. But it was a huge mistake on FEMA's part.
  14. Yes. They still screwed up. Well over 24 hrs (LA governor's delay) there was still a need for much more federal help in LA and Mississppi. Again, no one has said FEMA is exclusively to blame. But they dropped the ball.
  15. So as long as lip service is paid then it's okay? Don't forget, skydivers that can spot without GPS are the exception these days. The USPA has done a whole lot to change that. If lip service is enough, as you imply, the city officials did enough by merely calling for the citizens to evacuate. I didagree, but that is consistent with your metaphor. Here we agree. I would go one step further and say that the federal goverment is even less innocent.
  16. Reread his post. He didn't say FEMA was exclusively to blame, as you imply he did.
  17. Ahh. Sometimes it is hard to notice sarcasm in print. Crozby: If that's the case, I apologize.
  18. Hey cvupcake- Quick economics lesson. Poor gas mileage equals increased demand. Increased demand equals higher prices. It is logical to conclude that gas guzzling SUVs that are not held to the same fuel efficiency standards are, in fact, contributing to higher gas prices.
  19. I doubt you could link to a single post claiming local and state gov'ts handled everything properly. But you can post rhetoric blindly supporting the federal government in spite of their obvious failures in this situation. Don't get me wrong, I fully support your right to free speech. But it would be nice if your attacks on the left were even remotely justified.
  20. That is one of the most racist posts of seen, even in SC. Do you really believe people are poor by choice? Or that they choose the color of their skin? Hell even the idea of equal opportunity to escape poverty is laughable at best.
  21. Don't you understand? That way the would not die in the flooding. Advice like he gave is almost certainly from someone who has never had to utilize their LPCs as their primary means of transportation. Most people like that would be crying in pain like a little baby from the blisters and stress fractures if they ever had to take their own advice. They merely expect the poor to be tough enough to do it.
  22. city, parish and state Gov'ts The city and the parish and the state are closest and responsible for first response. It's like complaining about the uspa not doing anything about bad spots and a off student status skydiver getting killed for a off landing and finding out the gps was turned off. If the USPA had a systemin place, funded by skydivers, dessigned specifically to deal with bad spots, your metaphor would fit. As it is, it doesn't come close. Even though local gov'ts have (in some cases) dropped the ball, that is not justification for FEMA to screw up as badly as they did. I'm not quite sure why so many Bush supporters feel the hurricane/flood victims that were unable to get out are second class citizens unworthy of the same help that anyone else would get.
