[thinks] do people ever ask paragliders why they jump off perfectly good mountains? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Interesting way to judge a landing Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

somehow this answer appeals to me, I'm gonna use it from now on!!!! btw at first I used to use the "no such thing as..." response, but after the first incident report i saw of a crashed jump plane taking out people on board it didn't seem like such a good answer anymore. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

It was taken as levity.. but the point it led to is a serious one. I'm sure most people you meet will be professional, but there is always a "but"... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Not to be facetious but... just students, or anyone who has injured themselves? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Ah, now there's a good piece of advice. You may also want to read Tom Aiello's "Boyfriends and BASE" in the BASE forum, much of which is applicable to skydiving too. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

....no... i didn't read through all of the old posts just a couple ...there were very many of them from some years before i arrived here Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

[bump] So this guy put something on "General" a coupla weeks ago about his first jump being booked for April and a comment from an older DZ.commer made me do a search, so he's being saying this here since like 2000... and still hasn't jumped, apparently. then i forget about it. then today i'm surfing BASE sites and come across this little gem... just looking down makes me freak out. all of ya must have to be high to do this.if i tried this i would puke. clinton radloff ipswich, australia - Sunday, June 18, 2000 at 21:59:08 (EDT) (his email was on there but I thought I had better edit it here)... ok, ok, ok, my "bunny-hugging" attitude towards canopies is obviously in the minority here! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

but what a waste of a parachute!! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

yeah, "senseless" sounds like a better description than "funny" to me. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Newbie question: is night blindness a major issue with night jumps? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

In about a year on the forums I think I've been able to sift who to listen to and who to ignore. Your input will be missed, and it sounds like a lot of people who know you will miss you in the sport. Have fun with your chosen path. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I didn't. Didn't read a thing other than the stuff on the website of the DZ I trained at... A friend of mine said "you wanna skydive?" I said "sure" and about a week later we were at a FJC (SL jumps). (Then again it was only meant to be a one-time jump...) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
-
Presumably this is also why SL training teaches you that if you don't have a good canopy over your head by 5000 (on the count) you need to do something about it...iow the "window" of your reaction time is in the training. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Clarification, please? WTF you on about? I can't answer for Kelpdiver but what I think he means is what prompted me to post in the first place - we know any fatality is bad for the sport and surely there should be a natural leaning to wanting to help protect students - after all that's why we don't put them out on solo freefalls on their first jump. Re the answer above about gear, sure if you've been around a few but if you're a first time jumper... I don't know if there IS an answer. How do they know what's "normal"? And not every FTJ has managed to find dz.com before they go jump. Thanks to those who have tried to provide constructive input. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I did think of that. However the scarce details gave no indication as to whether the reserve ripcord had been pulled or not. I also had to wonder, if the gear was in that condition, about the training....? Anyway - that wasn't the question, the question was how a student can determine whether or not the DZ they have chosen follows all the required safety procedures... Fatality listed under incidents (no thread) in Chile, student with 3 jumps: "Student failed to open the main spring loaded pilot chute due to it being traped The ripcord was made out of yellow cutaway cable and not stiff black cable. Student was unable to clear this hard pull. The FXC 12000 AAD did not work properly ,as it was out of its maintenance date by five years." Another thread a girl was asking about Mexico and was warned to keep a lookout for some DZs having poor gear for economy reasons. My question is, how does a student really know what to look for especially if they have nothing else to compare it to? I mean, you pitch up at a DZ and they tell you it's all been done right, you're gonna accept that... And you can have old gear that is well maintained and safe to jump. This is probably not going to evoke many answers. I was just horrified at the Chile report and needed to get it off my chest. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I know of a broken ankle which was apparently linked to a student not understanding the instructor properly (English second language for the student) - not sure how the best way to go about it is but you do need to ensure that you have an instructor you can understand! Safety should be priority and I think this should be construed as a reasonable request - assuming they do have English speaking instructors. Part of the course will be about things that don't go as planned and how to respond to them. I understand it's normal for instructors to introduce themselves by telling you their traing and experience. I'm sure you can ask any questions that aren't answered. If you stick around, eventually Sensory overload is normal on the first jump... maybe you should have done a bit more on that 2nd jump, but you wouldn't be the first student to do that. Not sure how much training you had before your second tandem, but AFF ground school will be a lot more intense and the dives and emergency procedures will be drilled. (But if you keep on not getting it right, you'll get a speech about bowling.) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

So your husband doesn't really know her even though she is a good friend of yours, because he never joins you? Why "isn't he interested"? .... ya know, I would probably also feel a bit hurt with this situation if I was your friend. Not sure what "etiquette" is but I do kinda feel many women look at their wedding day as something that should be perfect. If she really is a good friend and it means that much to her, I think you should twist his arm to go. It's only a few hours out of his life after all. & what do you mean by "worse" than bored??? Technically, this is not tree landing technique, but tree escape technique... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Well, I get what you're saying even if the others don't To the OP: rather than whooping etc I tend to see deep breathing on jump run as well as whatever hand touches are used at that DZ. Often some smiles and a "have fun!". It was interesting btw watching one of the extras on the Good Stuff video - I think it was the making of "catchng the plane" where one of the jumpers was clearly doing the breathing thing in the door, and certainly in my own experience I have seen experienced jumpers doing this as well. Another thought for the day: The record companies would have us believe that the money made by CD pirates goes to fund the drug industry. But the money rock stars make from legal sales ends up in exactly the same place. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Did You Ever Second Guess Yourself?
Orange1 replied to MagicGuy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You're talking to skydivers. You're going to get biased responses As with others, there were a good few times I'd go up and sit in the plane thinking "why am I doing this?... ok I'm here, I'll jump, but this will be the last one"... of course it never was. You will learn about steering in FJC but it may be an idea to take another tandem but explain to the TI your concerns and ask him if you can steer a bit... you'll see it's really not that difficult to get back to the DZ, while having the reassurance he will take over if necessary. btw it's not the end of the world if you don't make it back to the DZ either, you'll be briefed on outlandings in FJC too.
