Making my first jump this summer. Question.
Orange1 replied to niolosoiale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
just to put a spanner in the works, i've done both and see advantages to both. AFF gets you there faster in terms of freefall skills, but some people prefer SL because its one-step-at-a-time approach is less overwhelming. Do a search, there are quite a few threads on this subject... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
What altitude would that jump have been made at? I am constantly amazed at the stuff the "oldies" had to go through to get us to where we are today (and grateful for it). I can't even imagine trying to manouevre in freefall with all that gear and those boots!!! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

High altitude records - no, not the "usual" question
Orange1 replied to Orange1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hope this question isn't too dumb. (I never did any tandems so haven't been involved in any jumps using a drogue): I thought the primary reason for using a drogue was to slow freefall speeds, rather than for stability? Also does anyone know if it's true that Kittinger only had 30 jumps or so when he did the "big" one? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
It is an interesting concept, especially for students that need more work on canopy control. And, as Erroll implies, to circumvent the often-seen AFF fear of hop'n'pops. Would be interesting to know what course of action these students end up following to get off student status.. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

what a cool photo - that smile!!! that gear looks heavy!!! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

The first response seems to make sense, if FAI then followed similar procedures to now wrt records Also I never quite understood the drogue argument. Do tandem pax never freefall then?? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -

High altitude records - no, not the "usual" question

Guys, I've tried a search but it hasn't answered this question. So Kittinger set the record, which he apparently still holds; apparently Piantanida (sp?) broke it but didn't get the record (because of what happened to him?) but according to the FAI website a Russian holds the record for a high altitide jump at 24500m. What are the different criteria that are decided on who gets what record? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
I know it should be a "hobby"... but that word makes me think of stuff like stamp collecting, I just can't call skydiving a "hobby"... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Bill, do I read this right - that even skydivers who realise they are hypoxic jump anyway figuring out they will be OK by 15K or so?? Apart from the South Pole jump, are there are any bad incidents that have been linked to hypoxia? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Do everything right ... still die?
Orange1 replied to Praetorian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
yeah... i'd already read the guidelines for camera flyers a while ago so was "aware" of the added risks but it's somehow different seeing a list of fatalities with that as a factor... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -

There are also a few incidents here which may not have been the skydiver's fault, but were human error on someone else's part (rigger, other skydiver etc). As an aside this thread has also made me seriously wonder if I ever want a camera on my helmet Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
from one newbie to another... do you visualise? a lot of people seem to spend a lot of time dirt-diving and otherwise practising or visualising their freefall but not much else. something i learnt early on was to visualise the entire skydive, right from climbout and exit, freefall, opening, canopy exercises, then the landing pattern and finally... flaring and landing. and before each jump i go look at the DZ and look at where i expect to set up and land. i found all this helped... just 2c to think about maybe? a bit of help with a presentation please
Orange1 replied to Fallosophy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
THere's a picture in the Skydiver's Handbook of a plane seriously damaged by a premature deployment, people are generally amazed by how much damage a piece of fabric can do to a plane. Re the landing question, might be nice to mention landing patterns - that it's not (supposed to be) a free-for-all of mad skydivers all converging willy-nilly on the same spot of land. just sounded contradictory to be working and studying both full time... over here we call night classes "part time" Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

??? how does that work? & why is this thread in gear and rigging...? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

hmmm.. just a question, startingout: what have YOU been trained to do if you find yourself with a bad spot? Would that training have led you to make the same mistake as this girl, or to land safely (possibly off the DZ)? If it is the training you are concerned about, this seems an appropriate question to ask... I doubt there is any DZ anywhere that has never seen an accident. Seeing one early in your career can be a bit spooky. It doesn't seem to me to be a big issue that no-one from the DZ went with her...and maybe they phoned her b/f/husband/parents/whoever is listed to call in emergency to meet her at the hospital? If you have so much doubt about your gear why don't you play golf instead? Gee, another one of your constructive comments. Have you never heard of things going wrong with reserves? That is not the same as "doubting gear", or categorically stating things that might not be fact. Wasn't it you that incorrectly said the PD dual square report said to fly on risers? [/end of rant] Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Oh, you get them here, don't worry, you'll learn to ignore certain posters. btw I thought your original post was great I also went through the stages of really low confidence as a student and isn't it wonderful to get through those and reap such a great reward? Here's to a long, safe and fun skydiving career for you Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Are you sure about that? I've never had a reserve ride but I have heard of an instance of hesitation with a reserve. To the OP, just turn your head, it will clear the burble. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
