we've been shopping for a new washer and dryer to replace our old set. we had settled on one of two sets the were on the floor of lowes. both washers were $999 and one dryer was $899 and the other was $999. we're waiting to purchase until april 16, the day that florida's rebate program kicks in to give us a %20 rebate on the washer plus $75 for recycling our old washer. today we were in lowes for something else and saw that one of the sets was no longer there, and the other has a new price of $1199 each. this very well could be an isolated incident, or they could have conveniently jacked up prices the weekend before the rebate kicks in. fuck them. good news! a couple had previously put in an offer and we had a few rounds of negotiations. they ended the process before we even came close to an agreement. their best offer was far undere what we were willing to sell the house for, so we didn't feel like let a sale slip away. two nights ago they sent us a verbal offer. it sounded good so we said to write it up and make it official. last night we signed it and sent it back so now we are under contract. the good news is that with this offer, i looks as if we'll be writing a check for less than $1000 when its all said and done, but we have almost $1000 in our escrow so it may end up being a wash. this will be great. they also want to close before our next mortgage payment, even better. look at high school graduation rates as a starting point, then rates of criminal convictions. i went to boot camp in orlando in july and august. half my company was female so at night the guys had to go to another company's compartment to sleep while that's company's women came to our compartment. fucking asshole company commanders where we slept didn't believe in having the a/c on. that sucked. i had originally planned on being in upstate new york for most of august, but the school board here decided to start school on august 5th. i am in and out of the house all day. for at least a little while this will be an advantage. i get up really early so i can open up doors and windows to make the house cold in the morning and then close them again when it gets warmer outside than in. once the nights stop being cool this will no longer work. hopefully i can get used to the heat as it gets warmer and be comfortable at a higher temp. my family is generally comfortable in much warmer temps than i am. in a 75-80 degree house i will never stop dripping sweat and that's kind of gross, especially after bedtime. my poor doggie is already uncomfortable, pants much of the day, and sucks down the water. golden retrievers just weren't meant to be in florida. i'm going to have to shave her this week i think. you're tough! i'm not quite so tough. after our first bill of almost $300, i set the a/c on 80 hoping to reduce the bill. i was uncomfortable and sweating profusely and my next bill was still $300. i figured that since my electric bill in the summer was going to hurt like hell no matter what, we might as well be comfortable. to date, our lowest bill has been $134. i'm hoping our next one beats that. we're also getting a new washer and dryer so i'm hoping that cuts it down as well. one of the biggest kicks to the nuts i got when i moved to florida was energy costs. not only does electricity cost twice as much as in idaho, i use twice as much in a smaller house. i was looking forward to the winter, but then when it finally came i found out that the money i saved on electricity by not using the air conditioner got eaten up and then some paying for gas to heat the house. right now the weather has been nice. we are now on day 11 of having the heater/airconditioner turned off. last night it did get hot upstairs. i almost turned on the a/c, but i opened windows and turned fans on high. by bedtime it was comfortable enough to sleep, but it was a little humid. the ten day forcast shows mild weather continuing. i'm going to try to keep this going for as long as i can. we'll still probably have a high bill though, our dryer runs for at least 2 hours a day. i do have to acknowledge that skymama was right. in a thread about air conditioner setting a while back (i can't find it, but i remember it) she predicted that i would have a huge electric bill when i got down here. i'm ready to move back north and preferably west. the woman does have to pay. raising a child is expensive. you can bet that whoever a child is living with is spending a significant amount of money to raise the child. having a child increases the cost of living in many, many aspects from the type of house/apartment you live in, utility bills, childcare, they type of job you can have, etc. i understand your sentiments reguarding the rights of the father in reguards to adoption decisions. it may be frustrating and seem unfair that as men we don't have much in the way of reproductive rights, but that's the way it is. its best to just come to peace with it. i think the state medical licensing board has better things to do than worry about a guy who put up a sign. i'm unsure of the scope of their authority, but i doubt it extends this far into how a doctor runs his business. they can "frown" on it all they want, but that really means nothing. btw, doctors can and do "fire" their patients at will. their "feduciary duty", as you put it, extends so far as to refer their patients to another doctor of similar ability and that's it. you also heve mentioned several times lawsuits. what are the damages? correct me if i'm wrong here, but doesn't someone have to have been hurt in some way (financially or physically) to have a successful lawsuit? how has someone been hurt here? how many lawyers do you think would take on this case pro bono? yes, i do think it was unprofessional, but in the pantheon of unprofessional acts, this is pretty minor. also, the area he practices in is pretty solidly conservative. i wouldn't be surprised if it actually attracted more patients than it turned away. why do you keep mentioning the AMA? they have absolutely zero authority. given that less than a third (most of the figures i could find range from 17%-22%) of doctors even belong to the AMA, odds are that he doesn't even belong to the organization. given the AMA's stance on obamacare, i would bet that he is not a member.
