hasnt been an issue yet. I always tell them to let go and I let go a split second later. One thing you need to watch is that neither of you hit your hands on the step. Hasnt happened to me yet But I noticed my hand close one time. I kind of lean a little to the right now when i drop, just to give myself a little more clearance. Its easy to do just let go with left hand first you will naturally swing right. It wouldnt hurt to have the student put hands in. Or you can grab their wrist when they let go and control their hands. Whatever floats your boat. Its fun to do but I only do it every now and then because of the obvious extra work and dirtdiving. i'll huff and I'll puff and I'll burn your packing tent down

yea I've been jammed like that too. Never bent a reserve pin, but i've heard of that happening. I have found a way to explain it to them on the ground and dirt dive it to cut the chances of that happening. A bent reserve pin from that is a rare result but YES its one of the "what if's" And being aware of that possibility is good knowledge to have. It allows an instructor to make educated decisions. This is one of those cases where I only do it with certain tandems and when there is time to dirt dive it. Its also more time and movement outside the plane. which leads to some other "what ifs" that need to be considered as well. Just as you would with every other exit, consider the "what ifs" and be wary of them. just goes to show that if it can happen it will happen at some point. There is a possible negative and positive to every argument on procedure for conducting tandems. Every instructor will have their own views on thing and for that particular instructor it his particular viewpoint might work well for him. With all experienced instructors, behavior and jump safety is based off previous experiences and what they have "seen" happen. If some factor of the jump creates an "issue" then you are going to take steps to "fix" it in the future. Unfortunately by avoiding some scenarios you open yourself to others. It is unavoidable and is part of the territory with all skydiving. It can never be perfectly safe. Stringent regulation will only tie the hands of instructors to operate within thier comfort level whether its percieved comfort or not. A confident, comfortable instructor WILL BE SAFER than one that feels like he has been forced to do what he sees as "stupid" or "sensless" things. Thats the instructor that develops a bad attitude about what he is doin. It leads to resentment and frustration. Then you have a grumpy no fun instructor. Lets see how many people want to start skydiving after going with a grumpy instructor. We all know that most people whether they admit it or not, enjoy and start skydiving for the social side of it as much as anything else. Its the people in this sport that bring in new jumpers. If someone wants to start skydiving they are coming back. There is plenty of time for instruction later. Personally I think tandems are a introduction to the sport. They should be mostly fun with a little info thrown in. Show them a good time..do it safely...they will come back if its what they want. In the end there is only so much regulation that will actually help safety. whats safe is relative to what is happening on the jump and the personality/behavior of the student. Those things can only be judged by the instructor on the jump. At this point no rule can cover everything. Taking an instructors right to pratice his/her judgement away or adjust for the students mental state is just as dangerous as allowing people to make mistakes. And just as detrimental to introducing jumpers to the sport. Luckily with the great gear in this sport there is actually alot of room for mistakes, which quite frankly are the only way lessons are really ever learned. The important part is recognizing your mistake as a mistake. In the end I dont think there is a definitive right or wrong way. Just too many variables of situations. john i am merely an instructor that works at the DZ. It is not "my organization" as you call it. This is the problem here. you guys think we all make business decisions or have some ownership in the DZ or skyride??? You think we all run around with cary driving fast cars and partying??? damn well said! skyride is skyride and yes they have done some questionable shit in the past. But the DZ in Tn is its own entity. And it does everything it can to give its customers a good experience. we cant help weather and wind and last minute airplane maintnance needs. You guys think that you do a good thing by fueling these stories but the truth is you only hurt the sport. Skyride is not a problem in TN. It might be in other states. But not in TN. lets not forget to mention that there has been fraudulent BBB complaints made in the names of our own instructors. I wonder which one of you made those complaints?? Do you think thats honest behavior? We have countless satisfied customers and a very dedicated staff. I challenge anyone to come out and visit for themselves...then make an opinion of how we operate. If you have never been to the dropzone, just as this reporter never has, then you dont have any right making these negative assumptions. that reporter didnt say anything about windy days or clouds that might make it impossible to jump. its sad seeing skydivers not supporting skydiving. All the photo taking and video....typical hypocritical mudslinging. some people blinded by their own petty agenda dont care who they hurt or how they do it. Airport access is the future of this sport.(even though this is a odd case of private property) Any skydiver that tries to shut down a safe DZ by using these tactics should lose all respect in the community. If its a matter of rival DZ's then shut them down by finding creative ways to out compete them. Thats the only respectable way for a skydiver to shut down a DZ. My best wishes go out to the DZ that is fighting this. This is a sad state of affairs. I would not dare venture to say CQ is the devil. Perhaps he isnt a saint, but far from the devil. I can think of scores of more evil beings than that. My paychecks are signed for doing hard honest work that I have committed myself too. I do everything in my power to give people a good time, a good experience, and at the same time make some money to put food on the table and keep a roof over head. As far as shameful behavior goes..... I dont think CQ is alone on that front. There are many big names in this sport, including DZO's that have done horrible, wrong, or illegal things. I do not judge for that. It is not my role to judge ones righteousness. I can only support skydiving as a whole and as a sport, and as a source of income. I support ALL dz's and any place that is serving as an outlet to this great sport. This sport should be a BROTHERHOOD. NOt a bunch of mudslinging babies. I support all DZO's and DZ's regardless of past or present activities. VIVA LA SKYDIVING!!!!! If you have coworkers or people in your life that are creating stress for you ask jesus for help. Since I found Jesus my skydiving has improved and I've been able to ignore those that are malicious towards me. I use to want to stab these people in the throat with a chainsaw. Now I take comfort in knowing that im the better person. Love life and love jesus! shortly after i found jesus one of my "enemies" was diagnosed with cancer.
