  2. By "wingsuit spot" he may be referring to the pilot flying further up wind of the LZ after the last non-WS jumper exits. I had one pilot offer to do it for me on a day when the uppers were strong (thanks). I agreed, and it was fun because I could fly a longer downwind leg with some serious ground speed (for me at least
  3. Last year they were doing $15 to 15k for certain Holidays, this year they advertised 15k instead of the normal 13k for a normal jump ticket price. I'm not sure if they discounted the H&P's or not. It was on their email mailing list. 4. You can't go wrong with Perris. I haven't jumped at Elsinore or Pacific Coast Skydiving. Skydive San Diego is a cool place but I haven't jumped there since the ownership change. They also have a big lake there and some 3,000 foot mountains you'll want to avoid. Driving distance is also a factor since if you're going to finish AFF and go on to get licensed at one DZ, you're going to make a lot of trips back and forth. It's best to stay at one DZ until you get an A license. As for doing a tandem before starting AFF, some dropzone's require it, you can call ahead about that or just ask once you show up. I've yet to do a tandem, just because I wanted to go solo from the start. It might be a good idea just as a good low-pressure introduction to the sport. Have fun, good luck. 5. How about a place to list how many unclearable malfunctions, cutaways, and/or reserve rides? Also, how about increasing the number of disciplines to 3, 4, or 5? I'm starting to have a hard time only choosing 2. Finally how about a field to list how many major skydiving injures (hospital/doctors visits). 6. Thanks, the money helped sooth the pain, and pay for some grad school. I think the most painful part was how close I was to winning around $50,000. I was one letter and let a few eaisily solvable puzzles slip away. By not finishing them, I basically handed the game to the woman that went after me. Some relatives of mine were on the Family Fued as well back in the 80's or something. As I remember, most of them did well, but one family member came up with some ridiculus answers that basically ruined their chances of winning. A friend of mine's brother was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, I think he walked away with some decent money. 7. I was actually on Wheel of Fortune Friday, 2/4/2000. We filmed it on Friday 12/10/1999. I've been told they show reruns of it every now and then. I screwed up pretty bad a few times, but managed to walk away with $5,500 and second place. I think I focused a little too much on spinning the wheel and not on solving the puzzles. Back in 1998 the Wheel Mobile showed up at U.C. Santa Cruz for a contestant search and I stumbled down there hungover to try out. I managed by dumb luck to get my name drawn out of a barrel first out of about 700 people and ran on to the stage screaming and jumping around. I sucked in the mock game we did but still got invited to the next round of about 50 people that were trying out for the show in Carmel. After a few hours of mock games and a quiz of partially finished puzzles, I was chosen to actually go on the show. I lost my first invite for the taping when I moved but managed to fly down to Culver City in between finals and a ski trip 18 months later. It's a little painful to watch now and I usually need to drink heavily to get through it, but I did make some money and had some fun doing it. Vanna still looked really good and was pretty nice but Pat is short and aging. Of the 25 people and alternates that showed up for the taping, they drew us at random together and randomly chose who was up next each time. So I managed to get on the last show of the 5 they filmed that day. I think we started at around 8am and I didn't leave until around 8pm. Once the taping started it moved pretty quickly in real time. One interesting thing was the girl I was competing against said an 'M' and Pat thought she said 'N', and they stopped the taping, threw out the puzzle and started a new one. They also gave the 3 of us $100 for the mistake. That worked out well for me because I won the next puzzle and wasn't doing well on the previous one. I've always been more of a Jeopardy fan and I managed to sneak onto the inactive set next door at the Sony studios when I wasn't pigging out on the free food. 8. Did anyone else see this? They had a category called "Parachuting with the Golden Knights". A girl in the "Clue Crew" went on a tandem with them and videoed a few answers for the game. As far as I remember they went something like: A. This is when a person goes skydiving strapped to another person. Q. What is tandem? A. The fabric parachutes are made out of. Q. What is nylon? A. The military uses two methods to train students, static line and this, similar to a Tom Petty song. Q. What is freefall? A. In order to turn and slow the parachute for landing, a skydiver uses these, attached to the steering lines and also found on a car. Q. What are brakes? A. This organization oversees the packing of all reserve parachutes. Q. What is the FAA? I got them all right except for I was thinking toggles and couldn't come up with brakes in time. I guess most cars don't have toggles though. The contestants didn't get most of the questions and avoided picking the category until the very end. They also showed some short sequences about the golden knights and the "Clue Crew" girl's tandem. 10. If you're in TJ, there's Skydive San Diego in Jamul not too far away. Although the management has recently changed so I don't know what it's like now, but it was a cool place before. 11. In Byron, Davis, and Lodi there is a landing area near the hangar and runway. In Lompoc (Skydive Santa Barbara), you land fairly close to the runway in a clearing, or the students land in a larger open dried out creek bed. There is a van but it's a short
  12. Never use both the audible alarms and backlight in the Neptune. It seems like the menu should warn you of this. Neptune night jump info: http://www.alti-2.com/Neptune_Owners_Pages/night_jump.htm I had the same think happen to me on my first night jump. The audible will still sound, but the backlight will turn off when the audible is sounding. 13. Cool place. If you're anywhere near Vegas, it's the only dz that treats fun jumpers well. They seem much busier in the winter. Give them a call, they'll treat you right. 14. Sounds like you could've been preventing yourself from breathing by covering your mouth/nose with your hands. Try it on the ground, it makes things more difficult. 16. If you go to Hollister, she may get talked into driving the van for $5 a trip
  17. Skydance flies the PAC to 13k. Prices are $19 for individual jumps or less for blocks http://www.skydance.net/sd/discpkg.htm When there's a tandem going to 18k, they'll let you tag along for something like $5 extra if there's room. 18. Johnny Utah's packing DVD is great, he covers everything in a lot of detail and shows it to you. Asylum has a packing VHS that is pretty good. Look under Accessories. http://www.crmojo.com/ http://www.asylumbase.com/ I haven't seen Apex's yet, you can find it under price list or parts & accessories. http://www.apexbase.com/ A BASE rig packing class would be a good idea, it's usually a big part of the first jump course, and a lot is covered that goes beyond whats in the videos. I was also glad I had the video and practiced packing a few times before the FJC. 19. Wingsuit ski-BASE! Sounds like fun. You could cut away the skis shortly after launch and then fly the wingsuit, then deploy a parachute. OR you could fly both the skis and the wingsuit similar to a ski jumper with wings, and then either try to land the skis (assuming you're using something like a prodigy) or deploy a parachute. 20. There's supposed to be a DZ opening up at the airport in South Lake Tahoe, but as far as I know, they're not in full operation yet. Email laketahoeskydivingcenter@gmail.com or call 1-530-544-9SKY and see what they say. That's really close (a few minutes) to Heavenly. There also used to be Skydive Lake Tahoe in Beckworth, CA. They shut down, and that's on the other side of the lake (a few hours at least), but last I heard if you get a group of guys together you might try and call Mike Vail and he'll fly a few loads in his Cessna 207 for you. Other than that the closest would probably be to drive down to Lodi (a few hours). 21. I think Greg is now the full owner. They did a 50-50 ownership for a little while. BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  22. SkyDance is great. The weather is somewhat unpredictable this time of year, although it is normally pretty good there. BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  23. I found this on the dz locator at http://www.dropzone.com/dropzone/Detailed/132.shtml http://www.skydivecentraloregon.com/ Skydive Oregon in Molalla is a cool place. 24. The weather is pretty good there in April. They're usually shut down on Mondays and Tuesdays I think. Wednesdays and Thursdays depend on how many jumpers are there on whether or not they run the PAC or the 182, although they mostly use the PAC recently. Most weekends are pretty busy, I'm guessing around 20+ loads at that time of year. Best to contact manifest to see what they say. It's a fun place, and Guano is great.
