I believe that is a question that would be best suited for the S & TA at your DZ. I know for Strong you just need the approval of the tandem instructor but at my DZ in order to shoot tandem video you have to qualify for the tandem rating (meaning 3 years in sport and 500 skydives) but you also have to have quite a few video jumps before they let you pratice near tandems. STRONG vs SIGMA vs VECTOR vs ECLIPSE TANDEM RIGS
TALONSKY replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
Just a hint, you may want to turn your caplock off. It is considered YELLING when done in capitals. Kirk -
Sounds like a plan if we have altitude for it.

I only have heard about two canopies that due to their openning charteristics would not be great for wingsuit flying. A Vengence and a Velocity both do to the canopy hunting for a heading on deployment. Kirk
-
When starting wingsuit flying it is best to start with a non elliptical canopy. Initial deployments can be kind of interesting. Kirk
-
While you can use pretty much any canopy, ones that fly good in line twist are probably the best. I have flown Crossfire 1 with great luck. I also have flown a Crossfire 2 with great luck however, I had it line twist on me three times and all three times it started diving toward the ground (I was always able to kick out of the line twist but did not care for how it dove toward the ground). My current canopy a VX 109 works fine but over the last 10 flights I have ended with line twist 5 times. So far my VX has flown straight and level with the line twist. So obviously it is best to have a less elliptical canopy but it all depends on what you want to deal with if things go wrong. Sabre 2 is really a great wingsuit canopy. Kirk

I think after looking at the video it should be noted that the pond he is swooping on and near is 200 feet long. There are a few of those swoops that are near if not over 200 feet long. Damn that is incredible for a Sabre 2, not just a canopy for the intermediate skydiver. Kirk

That is great love the photos

why can't you fall straight down? Well you can do that without a wingsuit, so why spend the money for a wingsuit to fall straight down. If you collapse all your wings long enough you will fall straight down but that would not be much fun. Kirk
-
My VX open's fairly nice most of the time. Your bag leaves at about a 45° angle so that is why they suggest having the corners on most containers modified for wingsuit flying. Kirk
-
You are only thinking 1 dimensionally. While you can get into the 30's and 40's vertical speed you are still doing around 80-100 MPH horizontally. Kirk

Most first time tandem students are scared. It is the tandem instructors job to help them through being scared and get them into the air safely. I do not personally use the term skydiving is safer than " " but I do let them know it is safe. I also let them know in my 917 skydives I have never use my reserve and have always landed safely. If the student is more calm at exit it makes for an overall easier skydive Kirk

Saw video of a guy jumping w/o rig!!

What you do not see it the harness that he has under is shirt so his arm strenth is not as much of a factor. To land he flips himself up and puts the rig on normally and lands it normally. -
EXIT TO THROWING THE DROGUE OUT INSTABILITY PROBLEMS
TALONSKY replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
I am going to start something here, and some of you are going to have a problem with it. If you need a baggy suit to take someone comfortably, you need to rethink your chosen preofession. When someone comes and pays the kinda money that we are charging to do a tandem, we need to work as a team to make it happen. that means the camera person and the tandem master need to work together. If you need to wear a baggy suit to be comfortable (especially with someone under 150 lbs.), you just put a much bigger load on the other half of the team. If you can't hold the drogue a little to help when you have a 100 lb passenger, you aren't helping your partner at all. It all goes along with little things such as facing the sun. Wearing clothes that doesn't put undue strees on the camera flyer (we need to dress for the success of the product). It takes a team to produce a excellent product, be a team player. I am not saying we need to take added risks, what I am saying is that if you aren't good enough to do this simple little things, maybe you should being doing something else. I understand where your coming from on this subject. My course director told me and I agree that one looks much more professional in a suit rather than sorts and a tee shirt. I do like the extra control I have wearing my freefly suit but I do not need to wear it. I wear it to present a myself as a professional if I am taking up a light student with vid. I will ditch the jacket or just suck all limbs in to help my video guy. Kirk -
EXIT TO THROWING THE DROGUE OUT INSTABILITY PROBLEMS
TALONSKY replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
We do include in our ground teaching something about if you feel us move you do not fight it just try and stay where we move you to. In my experience that has never worked if I have had a need to ankle lock a student they will start kicking at my leg to get out. I do not understand it, I just think their body is reacting without any true thought process to it. That is why I just kind of gave up on it and now just out fly them. I find it interesting but now after I exit I truely feel myself totally relax and I just react to keep us flying on heading. Kirk -
EXIT TO THROWING THE DROGUE OUT INSTABILITY PROBLEMS
TALONSKY replied to foreverfree's topic in Instructors
In my limited experiance(160 tandems) I would totally agree. I spent my first 100 tandems trying to ankle lock the students and fighting for control. Now I just get out into the relative wind pull the drogue and fly around what ever the student is doing. Kirk -
I stripped out the threads on my Camcorder, how do I fix it?
TALONSKY replied to TALONSKY's topic in Photography and Video
Thanks for the replies. I need to use the camera tomorrow morning at 5:45 AM for a balloon jump so I thought my best first option would be to tap the location hole in front of the threaded hole( there are no threads left in the original threaded hole. I made sure the bolt I used was only .020 from bottoming out in the hole). To my amazment and I think they may have thought this out ahead of time that location hole is the right size to tap 1/4-20 so it worked out great. Kirk -
I stripped out the threads on my Camcorder, how do I fix it?
TALONSKY replied to TALONSKY's topic in Photography and Video
OK, maybe I am the only gorilla that does not know how to snug a screw down. I stripped out my PC 105 mounting thread on the bottom of the camcorder. Now my initial thought would be to either ream and retap to the next bigger size or to ream and tap the locating hole in front of the mounting thread hole. My only hesitation come from not knowing how thick this area is, I do not want to ream and tap to find out I went through the thin wall and screwed something else up. So has anyone else had to mess with this, and if so how did you fix it? Kirk -
So far my personal best is 2 minutes 28 seconds from 13200 AGL and deploying @ 2800 AGL. I have a Skyflyer 3. Kirk
-
Oh, wait that's right you do not swoop for distance as you have stated quite a few times in past threads. So, what does all this have to do with JC setting a new world record distance swoop?
-
It is interesting that after doing a search on your post, a lot of them are to discredit others while shining a light on you. Hmmm, are we trying to make up for a lack of something? I think, that whether it is with a slight downwind or not to break over 400 feet is quite a feat and should not be discredited unless the person discrediting it can do better.
-
600 feet for double fronts is way high, but it is always best to start out too high and slowly dial it down. To give you an idea of the heights I use for my VX loaded 1.97 to 1, I do a harness 180° approach from 550 feet. With my Xaos 98 loaded 2.19 to 1, I do a harness with front riser input 180° from 650 feet. Once again always start out too high and dial it down slowly. Kirk
-
You know this thread is getting way off track. It is about JC setting a new distance record not who can land a canopy at 4 to 1 wingloading. Kirk
-
Triple risers ? I thought most people went away from them due to, by pull your rear risers out when flaring you gain a marginal increase on efficientcy(do to the wing profile being flatter). Kirk
