The actual data tell a pretty one sided story. It is only in non-scientific newspapers and periodicals where there is any debate about what the data mean, usually by people not qualified to have an informed opinion on the topic (due to not actually being familiar with the data, analyses, or climatology in general). The US data is not excluded from the world data, and the world data still reveals temperatures to be warmer than average. No one said any such thing. The only reason any business ever declares bankruptcy is because it is the most profitable option, even if that only means the smallest loss. Actually, it can be done. Berkshire Hathaway often invests in businesses when the market price of the stock is less than the company is worth if liquidated. The past few days have undoubtedly increased the value of the Twinkie name. Bankruptcy proceeding will require all interested parties to bid against one another in a now or never purchase opportunity, driving the price higher than what the names & recipes would bring if prospective buyers were courted individually. Rich people spend a smaller proportion of their total income than poor people spend. Increasing taxes on the poor and middle class will remove more money from the economy (unless government spending is also increased, defeating the purpose of raising taxes to reduce the deficit) than increasing taxes on the rich to raise the same revenue. First past the post plurality voting systems, such as the US uses, tend towards an entrenched two party system. Unfortunately, that means a vote for a third party is a wasted vote. If we want third (or 4th, 5th, etc.) party candidates to have a legitimate chance, we must change the voting system. Interesting. Personally, I vote for what is best for my country, regardless of how it affects me personally. I guess I took Aristotle's advice to heart. No, I don't vote to take money out of my neighbors pocket if I am not having to pay it out of mine. Vote a 20 mil increase in property tax to pay for some library we don't need? Hmmm..... let's see. Do I own property? No. Do I pay the tax increase? NO. Do I vote on the issue? NO. If the property owners want to vote to pay it, that's up to them. You apparently don't have a problem voting for the same. As a citizen, I have the right and responsibility to have a say in such matters. Even if my neighbor makes more money than me, my share in this country, including this country's revenue, is equal to his. If it is my country's (or state's, county's, or city's, depending on the scope of the election) best interest to raise my neighbor's taxes without raising mine (or raising mine while lowering his), I'm going to vote to make it happen. I would be remiss in my responsibility as a citizen if I didn't. One need not actually own property in order to pay property taxes. That you appear to not understand what is meant by the term state. you do understand that some words have different meanings right? I like the "condition of being" definition of "state" for this discussion. as in a "free state" would imply a "state of being free". Perhaps you hadn't considered alternate meanings of the word. Here's a few easy examples, most of which are pretty painless: Don't drive a large car/SUV when a subcompact will do the job. Don't drive any motor vehicle when your feet or a bicycle will do the job. Combine trips. Buy locally grown food whenever possible. Eat less meat. When possible, use a toaster oven instead of a full size oven. Keep your tires inflated. Use rechargeable batteries. Use LED lighting whenever practical. Turn off lights when leaving a room. Turn off appliances when not in use. Whenever practical, plug electronics into surge protector with power switch, and switch the whole thing off instead of allowing the electronics to go on standby. Turn the thermostat down a couple degrees in the winter and up a couple of degrees in the summer. If you look back to the debate of the issue, you'll see that President Obama was extremely reluctant to extend the tax cuts on the rich, as he knew that doing so would only slow down the recovery.
