  1. True, but non-participation can be largely accounted for with survey methodology. That's exactly what it does. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. I understand. You feel that gun owners are inherently dishonest. You're entitled to that opinion. Still, the surveys provide the best data regarding ownership rates that I know of. The NICS data simply don't provide enough information to tell us about ownership rates. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  3. One of the gun law reforms I would like to see is some codification of gun owner responsibilities. I know many gun owners. Sadly, I know fewer responsible gun owners. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  4. No one claimed they are conclusive. That does not, however, mean that they aren't highly probably correct. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. True but I haven't seen any valid reasons why the data from the (independently performed) surveys should be dismissed. (That they were obtained from surveys is NOT a valid reason.) Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  6. To be fair, knowing the laws and how they apply is practical training for LEOs. But I get how such training should supplement, not replace, hands on training. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. Survey results describe the data collected for the survey. If there is no data, then there is no survey. Or, equivalently, if there is a survey, there is data. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  8. True, they could be. It is FAR more likely, however, that they're pretty accurate, especially since there has been no data presented that contradicts them. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  9. Again that is your opinion and mine differs. I won't repeat myself again. That was not an opinion; that was mathematics. No, it's your opinion that surveys and polls are enough to draw conclusions from. I disagree. It's not a mathematical certainty. You should probably read up on the maximum likelihood principle before making such foolish statements. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  12. I've already considered such things. Add the fact that gun registration is not universally required, and we quickly find that surveys are likely to be the best source of information regarding ownership rates. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. The maximum likelihood principle tells us it is more likely that ownership rate is decreasing while sales are increasing. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  15. Agreed. Gun purchases, however, are not a good metric for measuring the rate of gun ownership. It is entirely possible and plausible that the former can increase while the latter decreases. Both Gallup polling and the General Social Survey suggest ownership is declining in the long term. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  16. Pity, since only first time NICS checks would be relevant to our discussion. We aren't interested in repeat buyers. If we can't separate the two groups via NICS checks, then those checks aren't a good metric for measuring gun ownership. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  17. Did you notice that the Forbes article fails to provide the number of first time background checks? Did you notice that the Forbes author likens using the NICS data to an exit poll? Did you notice that the Forbes article only refers back as far as 1998, while we're discussing a longer term trend? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  18. Yes, we do. Just because you don't like surveys does not invalidate them. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  19. That doesn't mean that they aren't a valid method for obtaining an accurate estimation of the population being examined. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. Combine that with the long term decline of gun ownership, and the most plausible explanation is that repeat buyers make up the bulk of the purchases. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. That depends on how you define "someone who should not have a gun." Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  22. That's what I said. It's not reasonable to assume they would without data, as you keep trying to do. They are more reliable than you seem willing to admit. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  23. Properly conducted polls and surveys are quite credible, actually. We already covered that, though. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  24. Sure it does. It gives us an idea of the number of gun sales. You are assuming they are all repeat buyers or that people are getting rid of their guns as new gun buyers are buying gun. An assumption. No, I'm not assuming anything. I'm simply going by what we know. Increased gun sales do not imply increased gun ownership. You are assuming, without supporting evidence, that they do. Considering how many people I know who used to own a gun or two and now own small arsenals, I don't see any reason to disbelieve that gun ownership can decline while gun sales increase. While my own observations are not data, they also don't contradict data. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  25. Actually, it isn't remotely as good, as sources go. They quoted NICS numbers. Verify them if you think they are wrong. It doesn't matter if the article is right or wrong. It doesn't address the right question to support your claim, even if it is right. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
