  1. why not, since public schools are modeled after the proposal in the OP - private pilots subsidizing the industry how do you miss that? Quite the opposite, actually. You are wanting to subsidize private schools at the expense of public schools. How do you miss that? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. I think Obama has the best plan, with Clinton's being a very close second, and McCain's a distant third. All three have significant problems. Obama and Clinton place too much emphasis on immediately redeploying troops back home. McCain's plan places too much emphasis on use of hard power. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 4. Maybe the private schools could be modeled after the airlines. The childless couple benefits from living in an educated society. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. Every child has the opportunity to go to public school. Parents who choose to send their kids to private schools should not receive public fund to do so. It is all children. Nowhere have I advocated not offering the opportunity to go to public school to anyone. At the expense of those that remain in public schools. Sorry, that's not benefiting all children. If you decide that traffic is too heavy on public roads, should you receive public funds to have your own roads built? Public funds should go to public schools, where taxpayers have a say in the curriculum and the standards. Let's not, since I don't have any trouble acknowledging the obvious set of truths. Sorry I don't buy into your "Vouchers are the way to be fair to the children" fantasy; I prefer reality. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  6. His detractors are going to use anything they disagree with to claim he lacks integrity, just as Clinton's do. That's different from knowingly risking alienating liberals and conservatives. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. We can use twisted logic to draw any conclusion we want. In the example I cited, he risked alienation both sides of the issue in order to say what he actually believed. He didn't pander to anyone. That's not behavior that I see with any of the remaining three candidates. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  8. Vouchers would allow parents to receive tax monies to apply to enrolling their kids in a non-public school system. How is that not a tax credit? All kids do deserve an education, and the current system provides that opportunity. Taking money away from public education is saying, "the hell with the kids with parents cannot afford to pay the difference between the voucher value and tuition prices." Yes, it should and it does. Vouchers would not benefit "all the children." They would only benefit some of the children, to the detriment of the other children. Tax credits are often received in separate transactions. There's nothing unusual about that. Agreed. Public education does this. If parents want to send their kids to private schools, that is their prerogative. However, they should not receive public funds to do so. I want the funds to benefit all kids. You want the funds to benefit those that can pay the difference between voucher value and private tuition price. It's as simple as that. Very nice mischaracterization of my argument. 9. Mike Gravel, talking to a liberal crowd, when asked whether he supported gun control by someone who was pro-gun control, he acknowledged to being a handgun owner and to not keeping the handgun locked up. Then he said, in no uncertain terms, that he didn't have an answer on that issue, and that it wasn't as simple as either the pro-gun or the pro-gun control crowds would have people believe. He lost a lot of potential support from that crowd with that answer, but he had the integrity to say what he believed anyway. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  10. Good example. Reagan was able to act presidential, despite being a poor President. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  11. Would you care to provide examples? Let me start. If you fix yourself a glass of ice water and let it sit in a 70º room, the ice will melt. Without exception? That's not true. The Second Law of Thermodynamics is very precise regarding where it applies. You realize that black holes have an extremely high level (some say maximum level) of entropy, right? And you know that black holes are likely the most analogous phenomena to the singularity of the known universe, right? Your conclusion is not logical. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 12. You are certainly free to disagree. I'm just saying I haven't seen any of them display integrity. That would be campaign suicide in our primary system of candidate selection. What Obama has going for him is charisma, not character. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. I believe that's true of Clinton, McCain, and Obama. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. But they get the money back, conditional upon their kids enrollment in a non-public school. Since the vouchers are (presumably) based on the number of kids the parent is sending to non-public schools, it is effectively a tax credit. You are trying to artificially separate the two. The kid can't get educated of the educator does not have sufficient resources to do so. You simply want the money to go to a different system. Since that isn't my argument, I wouldn't expect my posts to convince you of such. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  15. No thanks. Too technical for a non-scientist like me. How about a dictionary (American Heritage)? ENTROPY NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. en·tro·pies 1. Symbol S For a closed thermodynamic system, a quantitative measure of the amount of thermal energy not available to do work. 2. A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system. 3. A measure of the loss of information in a transmitted message. 4. The tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert uniformity. 5. Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society. Didn't you just accuse me of selectively using definitions to support my argument? It appears you are projecting. Choosing to use a dictionary meaning of the word entropy instead of an actual explanation of the concept of entropy is an indicator that you really do not understand what entropy is. Here is a less technical explanation for a non-scientists. The explanation is not as precise or technical as the one to which JackC linked to, but more precise than your dictionary definition. 16. No, it wasn't. You make the assumption that the universe could not have caused its own singularity, which it may well have done. You are still confusing the known universe with the universe. The former is a subset of the latter. Again, just because Einstein, et al, found the known universe to have emerged from a singularity does not indicate that the singularity formed spontaneously or was created supernaturally. If it did imply such a thing it would have very likely given cause for Einstein to abandon his non-belief in a personal god. Science doesn't have all the pieces, nor has anyone claimed they do. However, there is more evidence suggesting the possibility of a cyclic or oscillating universe than one created by a supernatural deity (for which there is zero evidence). Have a look here and here. 17. Even if we use "no beginning and no end," the logic still applies. BTW, I'm not an atheist. I simply don't believe in supernatural, intervening deities. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  18. Actually, cosmologists use observation and mathematics. They are aware that they don't have all the pieces yet. That's why there are competing theories explaining the observed phenomena they do have. Besides, who claimed the universe was mindless? I'm a part of the universe, as are you and everybody else. I'm not mindless, are you? We are part of a self-aware universe. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  19. The voucher is a tax funded subsidy. Those who receive them will essentially be getting a reduction in their taxes, a tax credit for pulling their kids out of public school and enrolling them in a private or parochial school. So, basically, it is a tax credit available only to those wealthy enough to pay the difference between the voucher value and the tuition price. Vouchers aren't about teaching kids, their about subsidizing private education at the expense of public education. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. Not at all. They have access to the same education that the majority of the kids in the district have. If so many parents are that concerned, then some of them need to get involved by running for the school board, attending school board meetings, etc. If a service can be provided for 100 kids for $10,000, that does not imply the same service can be provided for 90 kids for only $9000. Fixed costs versus variable costs, as well as quantity discounts need to be considered. True, they're not fair. Why should those parent get a break on their school taxes when taxpayers without kids in school don't get a break on theirs. Schools don't operate on magic fairy dust. They operate on money. School systems require funding to provide educations to kids. Does our public education system need reform? Yes. That doesn't mean that we should reduce their funding. If anything, there should be more funding. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. Please present said logic. I've given it; you rejected it. Why do you insist on arguing about it? I rejected it because you did not reach a logical conclusion. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  22. "Prove it." Eternal means to exist independently of time. Time exists within the universe, not the other way around. The universe is eternal. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  23. They don't. Those kids are free to use the public schools and are, in fact, required to if they do not choose other options. If we use tax dollars to subsidize private schools, parochial schools, etc; then the government should have control over the curriculum at those schools, as well as ensure a clear separation of church and state for the students. That seems counter-productive to the parents who are looking for an alternative to public schools. No, I think implementing school vouchers is saying, "to hell with the kids." I don't want to undermine funding for public education so that a minority of kids can attend a private school. It wouldn't be fair to the kids, and it wouldn't be fair for America's future. 25. No to the first, yes to the second (I don't think he handled the Wright non-issue very well). I agree with Obama on the fuel tax holiday. I think it's a bad idea. In fact, in terms of quantity, I agree with Obama on more issues. In terms of issues most important to me that the two differ on (e.g. healthcare), I find Clinton's proposals more agreeable. Of course, I don't really care for either one of them, and think better candidates were eliminated in the primaries. They both pander to their audiences. Of the two, I believe Obama is the worse, albeit preferable to McCain. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
