  1. NOW HERE is a none political opinion that should be regarded as gospel By the way, what I quote and pasted was as far as anybody should go And if that is as far as anyone reads, they will remain ignorant of the facts of the matter. 2. That doesn't really seem to be the case. The operatives seem to generally be on the non-effective side of the argument, as has been demonstrated in numerous other threads on the topic. Here is a good thread to read for more in depth info. Be sure to follow the links contained within. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  4. Why would you advocate using torture in such a situation when other interrogation methods have proven to be more effective? [nerdgirl] has previously posted on the subject of a ticking time bomb here: Under the notional scenario you posited, I would want the most effective interrogation method used, i.e., *not* torture. Traditional interrogation methods have been shown to work under extreme circumstances,
  5. In high school, my best friend had a '67 GTO with the dual gate shifter. His dad restored '67 goats. He actually strayed once and restored a '66. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  6. The upfront premium of building a home to be energy efficient offers a tax free return on investment. For example, if superior insulation, solar panels, etc. save a home owner $100 per month on their utilities, they do not pay taxes on an extra $1200 each year. If I were a builder, I would focus on technologies that reduce operating costs, since those are features that can be justified to potential buyers regardless of their ideology w/r/t the environment. 7. There's no evidence that that torture is in the interest of our national defense. Quoting a passage from an apparently obscure historical document: This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. There is actually more to the Constitution than the right to keep and bear arms, despite what Dick Cheney or Rush Limbaugh would have people believe. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 8. Interesting. I did not realize one was required to give their DOB. I've been under the impression that name and address were the only info one had to provide to LE if asked. Is that something that varies from state to state, or is it pretty standard across the nation? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  9. Since driving is a privilege, not a right, I don't mind being asked for my license and proof of insurance when stopped. Trying to search my vehicle for no good reason, on the other hand, is something I do have a problem with. driving being a privilage and not a right has nothing to do with it. if i'm speeding and get pulled over, i have no problem showing the police my license and proof of insurance. the part i have a problem with is getting stopped when i haven't broken the law have them just check to see if i'm legal. If the courts decide that checkpoints are illegal, then your argument has merit. Without such a judicial interpretation, however, the police seem to be acting within their power. If you don't like it, don't drive through checkpoints. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  10. International law and legal precedent makes it clear that the "enhanced interrogation techniques" in question fit the legal definition of torture. We are either a country of laws or we're not. We can't claim the high ground while only obeying laws when it is convenient. Besides, it is decidedly inconvenient to deal with the backlash caused by using torture during interrogations when we know that torture is ineffective. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 11. Just to clarify, are you saying that you don't agree with obeying international law and, by extension, the US Constitution? As far as "what needs to be done" goes, the experts are generally in agreement that torture does not result in reliable information, so it is very difficult to support the assertion that torture "needs to be done." The "Kool-Aid crowd" appears to be those who support the use of torture in violation of international law despite evidence that it is an ineffective interrogation method outside of Hollywood. 14. Have you considered the possibility that it might actually have something to do with torture violating international law. Or, are you implying that you believe politicians should be above the law and not held accountable for their actions? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  16. It looks like President Obama is not going to interfere with investigations and possible prosecutions of those who authorized torture of prisoners. From the Reuters article: President Barack Obama opened the door on Tuesday to possible prosecutions of U.S. officials who laid the legal groundwork for harsh interrogation of terrorism suspects during the Bush administration. Obama also said he would not necessarily oppose an effort to pursue a "further accounting" or investigation into the Bush-era interrogation program that included waterboarding, sleep deprivation, forced nudity, shoving people into walls and other methods. 18. Why is that not reasonable? Because we're making more laws (or decisions) to suppress the police and enable the criminal. I don't see it like that at all. I see it as the SCOTUS clarifying and reiterating law already in existence. Let's imagine that I am the prime suspect in the theft of a Gus Szamboti pool cue (that I didn't actually steal and don't possess), and the police obtain a search warrant to search my home for that pool cue. Let's also imagine that I have a 3"x3"x2" box filled with cocaine on my desk, closed. The search warrant would not authorize police to look inside that box, because a pool cue, the item for which the warrant authorizes them to search my home, would not fit in such a small container. They would need a separate warrant to look inside that box. Should they look inside that box while executing the search warrant for the Szamboti, the contents would be inadmissible in court as evidence to prosecute me on drug charges. The protections offered by the 4th Amendment are among the better things America has to offer her citizens. The goal is not and should not be to make the police's job easier. (For the record, I've never possessed a Szamboti cue or a 3x3x2 box filled with coke.) Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
