Well for starters: Rodeo - Legal Dog fighting - Illegal And in rodeo there are standards for animal care... Dog fighting they die in the fight, or are put down if hurt badly. He went to jail for more than that.... -
Popular 'Batkid' caper costs San Francisco $105K

A good portion of this cost would not have been spent without the event. It was crowd control and PA systems. I have a hard time saying it was wasted for several reasons. -

Will the GOP reverse the "Nuclear Option" when it gets a majority?
DaVinci replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
I think it is a terrible idea and didn't support it when the R's talked about doing it. But now that it is done, while I wish it would be undone, I think the R's will use it if they ever get back into power and the D's will cry about it. -
Yep... idiots.

Mandatory minimum sentences for child sex crimes
DaVinci replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Speakers Corner
Well I ask (not that I disagree) but if violent criminals are wired to be that way.... then maybe they should never see daylight again. Same with sexual predators. The trick is the details. I don't want to see another Alexander situation where a woman makes a bad choice, hurts no one and gets 20 years in jail. On the other hand the guy that was arrested in Chicago for gun violence and it was his SECOND offense clearly needs to never walk a free man again, and I have doubt he should of gotten a second chance. -

Id rather pay for testing people than just dole out payments to them. It would depend on their job. When I was in the Military I would have been fired and thrown in jail. Now I would just get fired. Maybe politicians should get fired and banned from public office. Maybe welfare people should be forced to either go to counseling or lose benefits. -
so now that the government can mandate that we buy something . . .

And yet the far majority already had coverage in one shape or form. In fact, less than 16% DIDN'T have coverage. And before you credit the ACA: "But Obamacare, as the act is known, did not have a major impact on insurance coverage in 2012, Census officials and experts said. They don't expect to see any significant impact until 2015, when the 2014 figures are reported." http://money.cnn.com/2013/09/17/news/economy/health-insurance-census/ And the ACA does not fix that.... According to the CBO an estimated 29 million will remain uninsured in 2019. http://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/cbofiles/attachments/43472-07-24-2012-CoverageEstimates.pdf And less than 2% of the HC spending was at Emergency rooms already http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2013/oct/28/nick-gillespie/does-emergency-care-account-just-2-percent-all-hea/ So this was a law that affected all of the US to try and provide coverage to -

Way to ignore the rest of the post. You are free to give 100% of your money to anyone you want. You are not free to spend my money at all. I am also free to spend my money as I see fit and NOT allowed to spend your money. So if you want, you may create an organization to take care of breast cancer in men if you like. -
Well, he was not told "not to", he was told, "we don't need you to do that". Facts are important. I am not the one claiming OJ or Zimmerman was guilty. You are.

Do you feel criminals are hard wired to be criminals? Say violent criminals? -
but the list was for places to visit, not live. And Shanghai definitely is a place to visit. Perhaps a more interesting destination than Beijing. True, but he is implying that Chicago is a great place. I can't agree with it being on that list or #6. I have spent time in Chiacgo - By force, not choice and each time it is a great day when I leave. Well, I'll be honest. I had a good trip there once when I was a kid. But once the blinders of youth came off, I saw it for what it really was. And I have fun each time I am there... But because of the company, not the location. The bean didn't impress me, not a fan of baseball or American Football. And the museums were OK, but I have been to better in places like DC and NY.

I am not ignorant for using mammograms on men as an example. 1. The RATE of breast cancer for men is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1:1,000 2. Mammograms are NOT suggested for men. There is a significant difference between knowing and using statistics and not knowing them and ignoring them. -

You die. But I actually have 250K. So I would decide if spending my investments to fight survive cancer or spending my investments to travel the world and have a blast is the course I want to take. My Dad had the choice to fight cancer or live the rest of his days as best he could. We found out his cancer had returned during the autopsy. These are extreme examples. But the point is if you try to compare the ACA to seatbelts, you are being dishonest. The better analogy is saying the ACA is like forcing you to buy a car or pay a fee. And that car must have certain features even if you don't want them and will never use them... Like 4X4. -
Why does capitalism bring out the best and the worst?
DaVinci replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
That is why I said, "I think almost any economic model in application will do the same. Some people want more and are willing to work, honestly or not, to get it. " It does not matter the system. From Capitalism to Communism you have those in power with more. If I had to choose, I think Capitalism provides better opportunity to move up. -

How about we drug test every person who gets a check from the Govt... Soldier, President, Representative, Local cop, city attorneys, and the people on welfare? I'd support that. I was drug tested when I served, didn't bother me. -
Mandatory minimum sentences for child sex crimes
DaVinci replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Speakers Corner
Not a fan of mandatory sentences in most cases. You get cases like Marissa Alexander's where she most likely didn't use *great* judgement but did not deserve 20 years. And when you factor in cases like a 17 year old had sex with a willing 16 year old. Or how a guy on the side of the road peeing getting labeled as "Sex offenders". You can see why I don't like them. On the flip side you see a guy like one of the people arrested in Chicago for the firefight at the park.... And you read he had ALREADY been arrested for using a firearm in the commission of a crime. you wonder how in the hell did that guy ever get out of prison? The problem is that judges do not seem willing to do their jobs. So legislation steps in and Govt rarely makes things better, IMO. -
How much longer can the president keep endorsing this?

My favorite most likely fake quote about the Government is an old Indian saying, "Before the white man came, we were roamed about chasing deer and elk, and buffalo. We lived by streams out in nature. We wore animal skins..... Only a white man could have thought he could improve on that." -

Me deciding I do not want maternal care and selecting a plan that does not include it is not me having anything stolen from me. That is why your comment makes no sense. Me saying that the Government is saying I must get HC is like saying the Government is saying I must buy a car is accurate. Trying to compare the Government mandating airbags to the ACA is dishonest. The ACA is like the Government saying each person must buy a car or pay a fine. In addition, each car must have certain features even if you do not want them... Some of those features might be good - Airbags and seatbelts for example. Some of those features might be great for some people and crap for others - For example I don't need a 4X4 or mammograms covered for me. But the ACA is not only saying I have to buy a car, but saying I must have 4X4. But giving me the option to select the features I want and discard the ones I don't.... Is in no way 'stealing' from me. -
Why does capitalism bring out the best and the worst?
DaVinci replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
It is a great question..... But ask yourself this first. Is it your job to make sure I do not act stupidly? That is a major question in itself. If you think a true free market economy then it is caveat emptor. And the crooks will get run out of the town on rails, or they will shut down because people will not buy their products. Yes, some will get taken in the process. But making mistakes is one of the best ways to learn. If you think that "someone" be it govt, your parents, your buddy... Whomever should be responsible for your choices.... At what point does that stop? If I give you power of attorney over my investments, at what point do you quit getting to say what I do? If we leave that power to the govt, at what point do they go too far? Imagine a world where the Govt decides the only "fair" way to make sure no one gets taken advantage of is to take over the whole thing and run your investments for you. Yes, there is a middle ground. But given the choice between the two I'll take #1. Correct me if I am wrong, but I'd bet you would as well. I'd say that most times the difference is in the customer. I'd venture that you have not fallen prey to any pyramid schemes to sell things. So the solution? Education. And yes, sometimes that education is costly. And not just for the people making the choices. Until very recently I had to help support my parents because of their terrible money habits. But education on how to handle money will go a long way. I'd rather see some money spent in schools to make sure people understand basic finance than money spent regulating adults. And to answer your question.... "Why does capitalism bring out the best and the worst?" I think almost any economic model in application will do the same. Some people want more and are willing to work, honestly or not, to get it. -
Check out #6.... I doubt very many people would consider Shanghai a great place to live. And # 2... If you have money it is pretty nice. But a severe case of the haves and have nots.

Police did not find a gun the first time they were called about Zimmerman "waving a gun". So far, they have not found a gun here as far as I have read. It is pretty common in domestic abuse cases for one side to lie about what the other did. I had a buddy have the police called on him by his GF and she told the police that he 'hit her with a gun'.... The problem is that he has NEVER owned a gun in his life. They also didn't find a gun anywhere in his house and days later she admitted she made it up.
-
False, I don't make it a habit to attack people and try to bash their head in. The EVIDENCE pointed to Martin on top of Zimmerman and hitting him in the head while bashing his head into the ground. Again, you might want to read up on Zimmerman being found *NOT GUILTY*. You may not like it, but it happened.
-
You might want to remember that lots of people are found not guilty. His past is his past. Unless you think both Clinton and Obama smoking pot should be held against them now. In the end, a jury found Zimmerman not guilty. You may not like the fact, but it is a fact.
