Went up yesterday afternoon for a fun jump. On the load was a tandem load with cameraflyer. I was seated next to the tandem passenger. This guy was a little odd to begin with, but once the wheels went up he really went into high mode. He kept asking me about crop circles, whether I believed in aliens, whether God really existed and whether L. Ron Hubbard and the scientology crowd was actually just a front for the devil etc... this went on for the whole ride to altitude. Even acting like I was sleeping didn't deter this guy. This made me think - for those of you tandem instructors etc... what wierd stories do you have from tandem passengers? OK - I've been following this thread this afternoon and have a question just for my own education. I am low time - less than 100 jumps. I am 170 out the door - loaded 1.06 on a Triathlon 160. I am working on the various checklist with a coach and the S&TA. I'm quite happy where I am with my nice square forgiving canopy. I'm conservative and not looking to progress too fast etc... I progressed from the 200+ sq ft student canopies to a 190 to a 160. I have a long time to go to think about this but..... Question: Where would you experienced jumpers suggest I go next when I am eventually ready to downsize and get into more advanced canpopy piloting? I would like to hear canopy and size opinons. I tried to travel to Colorado a cpl of summers ago with my full rack. I had cams, nuts, tri-cams, quick draws etc... the full package. I was told it would have to be boxed and checked through or shipped separately. They would not allow me to carry on my climbing gear. VSG - A really good friend of mine, a fellow jumper, is currently living in China. This is his second year living there and he's very knowledgable about the capital and surrounding areas. I herniated the cervical discs between C6 and C7 two years ago working out. Not sure how it happened but it resulted in the nerve roots to my left arm being pinched off causing serious nerve pain, numbness and loss of tricep strength in that arm. I did medical malpractice defense litigation work at the time and was treated by one of my clients, a neurosurgeon, with a history of conservative treatment. He scheduled me for surgery on the very first visit - so I guess I was pretty bad off. He told me the longer I left it - the less likely I would be to get the strength back etc... Had a distectomy performed using posterior approach (from the back of the neck) because I didn't want to lose any more range of motion than I absolutely had to. Dr. gave me the option to have the anterior approach done with a fusion, but I was borderline and chose the posterior. He couldn't provide me with any evidence that the anterior method would provide me with any better result or protection 10 yrs down the road. But did tell me I had a better chance of retaining range of motion doing it my way. 100% recovery. No pain, all strength back and only occasional stiffness and pain. One hard opening did leave me stiff and sore for a couple of weeks, but other than that I hardly think about it. Its very possible. I dated a dancer (i.e. ballet - not stripper) in college. She was gorgeous from head to..well....ankles - lol.
