  1. Is it just me or does he look like he has hair plugs in that shot?
  2. Where do I get my hunting permit and what does manatee taste like ? http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/06/08/florida.manatee.reut/index.html
  3. You're right, Kallend. However, how many civilians were saved by the death of him and three civilians? US Troops were apparently 5 minutes away. And the house was under US surveillance. Why not at least attempt to take him alive? Callous indifference to civilians never used to be the American way. And it still isn't.. It would have been callous indifference to the civilians he'd have killed had he gotten away if the U.S. had risked his escape. Fortunately the right decision was made. Monday morning quarterbacks will bitch and whine about any decision and outcome. After incidents like Torra Bora and other close calls catching these assholes this was the right call.
  4. Anyone out there got one recently? Mine's late due to a backlog and I'm wondering if this is what others are experiencing. Thanks.
  5. Or here too if you don't like ogrish, it's also Flash based. http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=20960_Candygram_for_Zarqawi&only
  6. Final version. Fixed it for you, no need to thank me.

    Aim high!

In the Army you're expected to aim high. http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htweap/articles/20060607.aspx
  9. Get yourself a video camera and use it. If they try to take it from you then it's time for the dogs & guns.
  10. But if you're a camera jumper or some other business entity you can deduct the VAT you paid from the VAT due at the other end and it's all perfectly legal. (P.S. i.e. keep the VAT of anything you charge for up to the limit of the VAT you paid of purchases at which point you start sending it to the tax man)
  11. Well now at least we're agreeing a chain reaction would happen. You certainly could get a runaway chain reaction. It would be a fizzle yes but it would be a fucking mess with all sorts of undesirable effects including a potentially huge release of energy. The likely cause of the "premature disassembly" in a deformation scenario that went critical would be the energy released by nuclear chain reaction. Ask the folks at Chernobyl if you need a spherical implosion to start a runaway chain reaction, then consider the prospect of little balls of happiness flying overhead with a boron chain between you and disaster. I only mentioned this because of the Strangelovian joy of the image it invokes not to get into an exchange over nit-picks, my original post stands.
  12. I know the story, Teller denies it and his name is on the patent with Ulam's (much to Teller's chagrin). Honestly I almost called it Ulam's design :-). I thought it was the fission "spark plug" going critical in the middle of the implosion that he'd come up with, not the whole focused X-ray - sheath expansion. Anyhoo, the point is it was fucking clever and we might not have had H-bombs for years if ever without it.
  13. I strongly disagree on the first point, I'm thinking about x-Ray driven implosion and more significantly the Teller-Ulam "spark plug" fission trigger not just stuffing a few exotic isotopes in an A-bomb. It's not enough that the knowledge of fusion was there, the temperatures & pressures required were off the charts for practical purposes and it was thought to be impossible to get there. On the second you're flat wrong. The devices I mentioned were spherical implosion devices with many times the minimum critical mass. If the sphere deformed it could easily go supercritical without a neutron absorber. They did make these devices insane as it sounds today, it was the only known way at the time to significantly increase yield after you'd added your fissionable tamper.
  14. That's the first thing I thought when I saw it
  15. Ah I missed that post, looked like gear to me :-)
  16. The A-bomb was inevitable yes but the H-bomb might have eluded us for longer if it weren't for some imaginative invention. Before the H-bombs were developed the large A-bombs had the potential to go supercritical in a crash there was so much material in them. So they filled them with chains incorporating neutron absorbing boron. To arm the bombs you'd yank out the boron chains... then fly really carefully .

  18. Exactly, English thugs should be recognized as such and this should not be allowed to tarnish the good name of Scottish thugs e.t.c. http://www.glasgowsurvival.co.uk/toys/glaNedagotchi.html

  20. I suspect it'd be the other way around in much the same way that melanin protects the skin the dye may protect the fabric but that's a guess. It's the UV that causes most damage although I've heard of wings being destroyed after geting baked in cars. A rule of thumb for paragliders (and AFAIK the ZP nylon is similar in both), is a lifetime of 300 hours of sunlight UV exposure. So yep, pack in the shade etc. I wouldn't worry about selecting my favorite canopy color.
  21. He's lucky he didn't "flare" higher, it looked like he was going to for a while. That would have been a certain downplane. Luckily he limped away but he almost demonstrated the worst possible thing to do with a side by side.
  22. You guys live in a fantasy world. A fortune has been spent on HIV prevention, treatmant and finding a cure. Moreover the contamination of the CDC with political activists as a result of the AIDS debacle has caused all sorts of problems in honestly tackling other infectious diseases. There have been extended periods where far from admitting HIV is predominantly a disease caused by risky practices like unprotected anal sex (and you can go figure out who practices that)there's a massive effort to avoid mentioning this because of all the political bullshit in America. There's has been a systematic effort to lie about the risks of HIV infection bacause if you scare people into wearing a rubber or abstaining "where's the harm". How about you can the political bullshit and just level with people about the risks they take instead of worrying about what they might think, who you might upset and attempting to manipulate behavior through half truths.
  23. What about the HAHO PARIS gear, it's light on details. Anyone know about the PARIS deployment system, can it be taken to terminal? What's the rapid descent device? (I'm guessing B risers hooked to speed bar like setup?)
  24. Not enough evidence, maybe nothing, like the nothing before I was born, or something wonderful but nothing we understand or have a good handle on in this life. I don't know, whatever gives you comfort and helps you deal with the inevitable.
