He never used his C# in my log book. In 1969 he was using D-2006, in Conroe, TX., jumping with the Rice Univ. SPC. -

Typical Dallas jumpers--they never could spot worth a darn! On of my longest walks was when Dowdy tried to spot a load in Conroe from 9-5! And that was after tracking to the spot for 30 seconds!!!!!!!!!! -

Do you remember how long it took Doc to switch from a Para-Comander to a Pig-let? -
Of Interest to OLD OLD OLD Spaceland Jumpers
drjump replied to efs4ever's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Spaceland didn't start until about '73 or so. I made my first jump at Doc's place in League City in '71, jumpmastered by Jesse Hall. When I first came to Texas in Sept. of 1969 I jumped with the Galveston Skydivers in Dickenson, Tx. Before Dickenson Doc A., Ed Fitch, and several other "old Timers" had operated parachute clubs around the Houston area. One dz was located in Cut-n-Shoot, Tx. Doc moved from Dickenson to Hitchcock in June of 1974. Dave Boatman and Jessie Hall opened a DZ at Spaceland Air Park, League City, Tx. with a Cessna and a D-18 twin beech. My first Twin Otter (300 Series) jump at Spaceland was logged on May 4, 1975. Often times after heavy rains when the Galveston Skydivers sod runway was under water Doc would move his operation to Spaceland for a weekend. There were several other DZ's in the area during the 70's. Cleveland, Angleton, Weiser, and then those Cajun's in Beaumont. -

New Paracommander owner!...What do you think?
drjump replied to steve1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
During the 70's I owned and operated 'Houston Parachute Service', in LaPorte, TX. Everytime that I ordered a new para-commander, for my own use, I would short line it 36 to 44 inches before the first jump on it. They performed so well that jumpers would buy them off of my back at the DZ. I was going through a new canopy a month, for a while! But, then again, that was thirty years and 30 pounds ago. Good luck with the modification. Let me know how it works out.-Doc-D-2785 -

drjump replied to steve1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
If you intend to jump the 'comp' model at 180 pounds-make good friends with a orthopedic doctor! Save that canopy for history as it is, don't modify it. Find a Mk1 to jump.-Doc -
As a Rigger during a reserve repack do you re-pack the main?
drjump replied to fugozzie's topic in Gear and Rigging
The original question that started this thread was only talking about re-packs! It did not question about complying with SB's. Of course, if a SB mandated the opening of the main container ( to be complied with) it would be opened. That should go without saying.-Doc -

drjump replied to fugozzie's topic in Gear and Rigging
I leave the main alone. That might mean a little more work in closing the reserve, but it came out with the main packed, it will go back in! -

drjump replied to fugozzie's topic in Gear and Rigging
I have been a master rigger for the last 30 years and have never touched a main canopy unless asked to do so by the owner. A thorough inspection of the containers, harness, and reserve canopy, along with the repack is what I am required to do by the FAA, and this is what the owner is paying for. If he wants the main inspected and repacked the price goes up. D-2785 -

Just going through negatives. Year 1982

Great photos, but when was Larry ever that skinny? -
The term 'Rag" probalbly originated with the fact that the military surplus canopies (cheapo) were often full of masking tape patches! Later on rip stop tape arrived to save the day. These patches were required due to the many holes, the old round canopies received from 'off' airport landings. Trees, fences, broken bottles, etc. Early modifications were made with a sharp knife or scissors and masking tape. This tape would only last for a few jumps and then the edges would start fraying= a rag looking appearance. Rags vs Cheapos? They were both military surplus that could be bought inexpensively.

The Skydiver's Handbook by Dan Poynter and Mike Turoff is a good start. Filled with all kinds of history. The go to The Parachute Manual (A technical Treatise on Aerodynamic Decelarators) by Dan Poynter. Or just find some old farts with four digit D-license numbers at the drop zone and listen to the stories we tell. Doc D-2785

It will be interesting to see how many opinions my question generates! I've got over a 1m round jumps and always (on my own canopy) used a retainer line the length of the canopy or longer. Yes, that cut down on the forward drive slightly. But, it was better than having the sleeve and pilot chute wrapped around a turn line inside the canopy! Sometimes old farts are smelly! Blue Skies
-
Quote Question for discussion--Which was the better method for preventing the sleve and pilot chute from ending up in a turn window? Long retainer line or short retainer line? Old farts were tough.
-
I'll go along with usedtojumpalot--The new USPA was just using up all of it's 'old' paper stock.

Pat--Attached is the patch you spoke of--The one and only--Galveston Sky Divers. Doc

That trophy looks very famillar. But, I'm not sure about it being the "Old Texas State Champion Skydiver" one.

The title of the forum is: Events & Places to Jump. If I posted the opening of a new Cessna Drop zone in Stephenville, TX. would that be considered advertising?--Doc

Can anyone post a picture of that trophy? Who has it now? Doc
