Low pull + CYPRES fire + near miss with tree.
NWFlyer replied to labrys's topic in Safety and Training
Thanks for sharing this - good reminder that sometimes that little voice in your head that says "stay on the ground" is right. Glad you came out of it only a little roughed up. This video is a nice argument for lightly-loaded reserves ... you didn't have any really good options, but a non-aggressive WL made that landing much less nasty. Hanging with friends at their house. Chill evening ... exactly the way I like it. But for those of you who don't have plans yet, may I suggest the attached? There's a pic (circa mid-90s, if I had to guess) at SkyDance of one in the 65-person range. I'm sure it's not the biggest, but I still get a kick out of it every time I see it. I could do CPR if I needed to, but every time I've been on a DZ during an incident (unfortunately, multiple times at multiple DZs), there have been several trained first responders on site that have been able to add much more value than I can. I have, therefore, kept my assistance to things like calling 911 or bringing in the gear that was left behind when the trained first responders dropped it and ran. But mostly I just stay the hell out of the way and let the pros do what they can do, unless someone asks me to help out. Still, good reminder to do some refresher training since it's been a while, and there may yet be a time when I'm the only one around.

Skydive Chicago has held a Rookie Fest event the past couple of years. The other thing to keep in mind is that you can go to USPA Nationals pretty early in your skydiving career, and it's an absolute blast (even if you don't have a "serious" team you can still have a ton of fun). Here's the eligibility requirements from the Skydivers Competition Manual. As you can see, you can compete in almost all events with just 100 jumps and a B license: "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. what is the best gear for a beginner to the sport?
NWFlyer replied to jerrid_atwood's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you're brand new and haven't even started jumping, the best thing you can do right now is start saving your money for gear. Student-appropriate gear will be included in the cost of your student jumps; after that, your instructors will be able to advise you on appropriate canopy sizes/types and you can begin to thinking about putting together your own gear. Of course. That was obvious once I saw the Galapagos reference. Lovely photo, too. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

*golfclap* ... mission definitely accomplished because I opened this thread just to answer the eternal question: "Why the hell is kallend posting about boobies?" Hippie was one of the many folks who made my six month work assignment in Atlanta in 2006 much more fun. As cranky and tired as I often was from constant cross-country travel and a project from hell, Hippie would always be there offering to pick me up from my hotel to go out to trivia or Neighbors or some other fun activity. Heck, my very first week in town on the project he even invited me along to a Braves game in his company's corporate seats. Hippie traveled a lot for work, too, so I think he got that sometimes the best thing when you're on the road is to be surrounded by friends and fun so you can get out of the drudgery of hotel rooms and work stress. That meant a lot to me. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

I'd prefer a K-Car (a nice reliant automobile). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

Personalized anything for me was a HUGE deal as a child, since nothing ever came with my name on it. So when I received those that year, I was pretty darn sure that Santa was for real since he knew my name and how to spell it! C'mon, we've all got them somewhere in our vault - that photo with Santa from years ago (or maybe you even have one from last week ... we won't judge!). The attached photo is me and my brother in 1974 - just after our 4th and 7th birthdays, when Santa paid a visit to our house and a photo op was born. He even brought us personalized pencils! She probably doesn't hate you, but she's clearly taking her time to adjust. I recommend bribery in the form of tuna. Preferably "tuna for cats" from Trader Joe's (it's extra stinky). So you're suggesting Andrea should bring her stunningly beautiful free flying girlfriend to PR? But that'll leave you home all alone. I just recently had to make a similar decision - got a $500 gift card from work as a spot bonus. I spent it on a chest freezer (something I'd been wanting to get for a long time), and a cat door that fits into my sliding glass door (something that cat had been wanting me to get for a long time - only he didn't know how to tell me). There was a little left over after that. I'd say spend it on things that you want but haven't been able to fit into the budget yet (or haven't wanted to prioritize yet). About the best you can do (of the national chains, anyway) is Chipotle. They're not perfect, but they do make a strong effort. http://www.chipotle.com/en-US/fwi/fwi.aspx "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. It's taken me a while, making gradual changes, but, as noted in my post earlier on this thread, I've made a lot of progress. I already noted the changes as of last year, this year's been all about the meat - a couple months ago I finally bought a freezer (it's stuck in the corner of my dining room, so it's not like you have to have space if you're willing to make space!). Just this morning, in fact, I picked up a 1/2 of a pig, directly from a source I'd researched carefully. So now, there's 76 lbs of well-raised, humanely treated pork in my freezer. I can't wait to try the sausage for breakfast tomorrow! Also in the freezer is a 1/4 cow, that I bought directly from a friend's small family farm. Finding that was a stroke of random luck - I'd mentioned that I was considering getting a freezer so I could start buying high quality meat in bulk, and my friend mentioned that they had a 1/4 they'd been looking to sell (to help cover their costs of raising/processing). Win/win, and it is some seriously delicious beef. I mean, even the ground beef is good enough that I will cook a burger up, and eat it with nothing on it just so I can enjoy the taste of the meat. It took a small initial investment ($200) for a 7 CF freezer, and I figure the extra electricity costs me a few bucks a month, but I'm saving a huge amount on the meat relative to buying the meat piece by piece, so it'll pay for itself very quickly (and since I bought the freezer with a gift card I got through work as a spot bonus, it was kind of "found money" anyway). So while I'm paying more per pound than I'd pay for most cuts in the supermarket, by buying in bulk, I'm getting even the expensive cuts at a lower per pound price than I'd pay for the cheapest cuts at the farmer's market or the local butcher. You don't have to go vegetarian. But if you're willing to spend more time and money and "vote with your wallet" you can get better quality stuff. It tastes better, and it's better (by a long shot) for your health. That alone, for me, is worth it, even if the environmental/ethical impacts weren't there. Add that on, and it's a big win for me. The true "cost" of supermarket meat is hidden. I'd rather pay it up front for better stuff. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Are you concerned about the illegal activity at the gym? Then report it to the police (though you might want to start with the gym management to give them a chance to respond first). Are you concerned about the atmosphere it's creating at the gym? Then talk to the gym management about why you think it creates a negative atmosphere at the gym, especially if it's something you would cancel your membership over - that's important information for them to have. They may choose to ignore it, but at least they know why they lost one member. IMHO, anything beyond that is making their problem your problem. Why bother? I love the beer panel at the end ... looks remarkably like my boyfriend did last weekend carrying in the four 12-packs that the two of us owed for our brand-new rigs. (So no, the fines never end, they just get a little less frequent!). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
