Threepeat! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

Looks like later this month for general availability on SP1: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2192557,00.asp I think I'm one of the few people (knock wood) who've had relatively hassle-free Vista experiences. I even have my ancient HP LaserJet 4L happily working (with a parallel-to-USB converter) with Vista! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Fitness Peoples...Post for February 29th-March 6th
NWFlyer replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in The Bonfire
I came to a major forehead-slapping realization yesterday ... when I'm bored (like, oh, say, when I'm laid off and have a lot less to do with my days... it's a lot easier to overeat. I snowboard, I'm scuba certified but haven't gone in a few years (need to fix that ... must plan for Boogie in Belize next year, I think), I've been on softball teams in the past, I've been known to bowl from time to time, and everything else is more along the exercise route ... rollerblading, walking, hiking, general working out (elliptical, weight lifting, etc.). I thought this video sounded familiar - there was a Discovery Channel show a couple years ago (discussed here) where they recreated the incident and tried to figure out if the pilot had other viable options than the one taken (which, IIRC, involved landing as softly, and slowly, as possible onto very soft ground). Z-Hills Easter Boogie March 15-23, 2008
NWFlyer replied to NWFlyer's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Anyone besides the wingsuit geeks going to be there? And me? I just found a ticket for $240 from Seattle, so how could I not go? Might as well take advantage of my slacker time while I can. I'll be out a few days early (March 12) and staying through March 17. I need some more sun! So who's going to be at this boogie? Star Wars, according to a 3-year old. (slightly different version with clips edited in). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

Clearly. I was trying to figure out a way to blame Bush since it took place in Texas and as we know, Bush once was Governor of that great state. But the daughter (the errant youth in question) is 16, which means she was likely born in 1992... also the year that Clinton was first elected. Coincidence? I think not. Mantas are typically used as student canopies, so yes, they do land soft, and you'd find the canopy ride quite leisurely! You may find it a good choice for some number of jumps to come back after your injury, but perhaps not for the long term. I suppose you ask what your options are. If you are a full-time employee now, are you worried they'd cut you back to part time just for having the conversation? I would ask if there is room for seasonal flexibility, and if there isn't, then you need to think through whether this is the right full-time job for you financially, I guess. You're not going to know whether you ask whether there's any room for flexibility, but be prepared for there not to be any flexibility ... then I guess you need to think through whether you can make this full-time job work for you financially along with part time work that is able to be scheduled around a full-time job that doesn't have a set schedule. But, but, but, this is Speakers' Corner, I could just as easily take that article and rail against Christianity ... after all, the family friend quoted in the article said "they were good Christian people." Therefore, of course, I can make the argument that this is how Christians solve their problems. Clearly then, the title of the thread should be "WTF is wrong with today's Christians?" At least, I think that's how the discourse is s'posed to go in here. Let me know if I'm supposed to actually, like, make cogent arguments or something. And again, it obviously WASN'T made clear to him. And that's scary. Yup. But not all of us "new kids" are getting scary instruction. Just some of 'em. I mentioned the hard pull instruction to indicate that it was made quite clear to me that I could use my reserve without any problems with my main still "tucked away." The reason for going to the reserve first (hard pull, low altitude exit, whatever), wasn't the point, although now that we're on that topic, that was also very clearly covered in my FJC in the aircraft emergencies section; altitudes at which you stay with the plane, altitudes at which you would go straight to the reserve, and altitudes at which you would exit and deploy your main normally. Again, in all that instruction, it was also made clear that deploying the reserve without first deploying the main was something that one could do. I try not to think too much. It's easier that way. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

No, but you do owe . Well, you will if you tell us what Parachutes is. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

You know, one of the things that no one mentioned in all of the threads griping about the signal to noise ratio in the Bonfire, but that I think is a big contributing factor is ... reposts. Anti-depressants of little use to all but the most severely depressed
NWFlyer replied to SpeedRacer's topic in The Bonfire
Yep, and I'd never be one to tell anyone "this is the right option for you." I'm a firm believer that for most people it's probably a combination of a bunch of things that's going to ultimately work... it's having the patience and finding the right providers who are willing to work with you to find the right combination that's the most challenging part. Anti-depressants of little use to all but the most severely depressed
NWFlyer replied to SpeedRacer's topic in The Bonfire
For me, I've found that to be the best treatment. If I keep certain things out of my body (most processed food, more specifically refined sugar and simple carbohydrates), drink moderately or not much at all, and exercise regularly, I find that my depression (generally mild-to-moderate) is kept at bay. I've tried antidepressants off and on and never really found any that do much for me. Or, if they do, the effect seems to be short-lived, and I suspect it's that placebo effect - I reach out for help, and the very act of taking action to ask for help also empowers me to take action on the other stuff I know helps me. But really, it's being able to stay consistent on clean(er) living that keeps my mind healthy. It's when I slip off that path that both my body and mind start to feel unhealthy. Can you get somewhere to try one on (gear store? dealer? borrow one from another jumper?)? I've found that helmet sizing can vary across manufacturer and across helmet styles. I'm a member of the Freakishly Large Head club, and I comfortably wear an XL in Bonehead's open face helmets but need an XXL in full face. I haven't found any other manufacturers full face helmets that fit my head at all. Since fit's going to be so critical for a camera helmet, you'll want to make sure to get it right and trying it on is probably the best way to tell whether that L will be perfectly snug or squeezing your brains out. Are you talking about dropzone.com? If so you might want to check your math because you're averaging more than 800 a year here. If I really think about it, yes, I suppose my numbers here could be considered an embarrassment. But there's nothing I've posted here that I wouldn't stand behind in person, and I've met a lot of great folks through dropzone.com - there's almost always a familiar face at a dropzone now, a lot of times because of this very site. People approach me at DZs who might not otherwise because they recognize me from DZ.com So if the price for that is occasionally cringing at my post numbers, so be it.
