  1. Guess I'd better find that seatbelt! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  2. Sorry things didn't work out as expected, but a big thanks for keeping this site going in tough times. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  3. 9 more days and we'll be at exactly 4 months. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  4. Yes. If you're job searching, it's fantastic. I used it quite often if I had a target organization but didn't know anyone there. I'd search LinkedIn, sometimes coming up with people I knew who I didn't know worked there, other times finding a connection who was one person away from me. I found the job I had before the one I have now through LinkedIn as well, and it's not a bad job search engine in itself. I find the signal-to-noise ratio of the jobs to be much better than any of the other sites. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 5. I just planted herbs & veggies on my balcony. Tomatoes, lettuce, rosemary, basil, and oregano. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  6. Got 3 RW jumps (12-, 10- and 9-way) in after the Safety Day presentations and before the front moved in at Skydance yesterday. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  7. We probably had 50-60 at Skydance today. Safety Day presentations and a pancake breakfast from 8-10:30, and jumping all day. The day turned out to be beautiful between two fronts - chilly and cloudy while we listened to the seminars, and a storm moving in by the end of the day. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  8. There goes the neighborhood. Congrats, Phil! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  9. Good news about Astoria is that you're roughly equidistant from the two biggest DZs in the PNW - Skydive Kapowsin up in Shelton, WA and Skydive Oregon in Molalla, OR. You're actually closest to Skydive Toledo in Toledo, WA. Not sure what Toledo's jumping these days but the other two have Caravans year-round and K-pow has an Otter most of the year and Oregon has theirs during the summer. 10. Which DZ did you contact? There are several dropzones within a couple of hours of San Francisco that do tandems - I'd suggest that you call and talk to each of them to see if they can accommodate your situation. http://www.skydanceskydiving.net/index.php http://www.bayareaskydiving.com/ http://www.skydivesacramento.net/ http://www.parachutecenter.com/ http://www.1800funjump.com/about.html http://www.skydivemontereybay.com/ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 11. I get those on my work cell and office phone. They've all been messages, not actual calls. Maybe it's time to add those numbers to the registry. 12. I have a natural bristle brush that I got at a shoe repair shop (recommended to me by a rigger). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  13. I think, right there, is why getting something similar going in skydiving is probably a non-starter. Insurance is based on pooling risk - the population of skydivers is probably too small to make sense. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 14. Other than babysitting, my first real job was at a chocolate store at the mall. Bad idea on many levels. I worked there about 4 months then got a job down the hall at Sam Goody. Also a bad idea (most of my paychecks went into CDs at the employee discount) but at least not as damaging to my health. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 16. Your first and only brush with diplomacy?
  17. I try to never be without one. I've never actually done it, but I like the idea that I could take off on an international trip at a moment's notice. Well, I guess I have run off to Canada a few times but that was back when you didn't need a passport. And it was convenient to have one when my former employer was looking for people to staff a Toronto project. But really, it's about personal travel - I like the fact that I'll always be ready to go somewhere if the opportunity arises. I got my first passport at age 5 - it was a diplomatic passport. 21. 1) They don't need any reason. 2) They charge the price the market will bear. 3) If the market won't bear that price, there will be empty seats and they'll use them to reward their most frequent customers, the ones who buy tickets every single week and not always at deeply discounted prices. 22. Rubber ducky, you're the one. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  23. Last photo. The cat is not included in the $40. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  24. On a cross-country trip last weekend I spent most of the flights watching the in-seat entertainment units and switching between HGTV and the Food Network. Home porn and food porn! The home porn inspired me - when I got back home I looked at my stark white bathroom and said "Fuck, this is really kind of institutional and depressing. Since it's a rental I don't really have any interest in painting, but I figured I could have some fun with it anyway. I think all of this was under $40. 25. Until you resolve those conflicting things, you're stuck with her. She doesn't give enough of a shit to make a (real) effort to take care of her own needs. From the way you've described things, she either 1) managed to blow though 10 grand in one month or 2) never had anywhere near 10 grand but fully intended to come to Australia anyway. Either way, she's not exactly a model of responsibility. You're enabling that, and don't be surprised if she's not out of there in a year (or she's asking you for money for a return ticket so she doesn't get kicked out of the country). She's not being respectful of you or your partner, or of the friendship she has with her partner - doesn't sound to me like a friendship worth preserving.
