  1. No problem. Barr and company are working up a far better report to replace the factual one.
  2. It is if course in the nature of military forces to be aggressive. And it's no wonder that self control is not perfect. I feel that American forces are among the most disciplined in the world, but mistakes and excesses will still happen. When the command structure fails to act or acts inappropriately it becomes a leadership problem. Trump is a leadership problem. But it is not very different than the Bush administration deciding that they could do waterboarding because somehow it's not torture when God is on your side.
  3. Without accountability what is the difference?
  4. I'll betcha if that dude was black, or worse yet middle eastern looking the jury would have had his ass in stir.
  5. Wages had stronger upward pressure and were rising. As you know, the unemployment rate is strongly affected by the participation rate.
  6. And has been interpreted to mean different things. But in any case, the clever little film is still bullshit.
  7. I would call BS on that. Shortly before the 2008 crash things were looking pretty good for workers in the US.
  8. Yes, of course. Nothing can be done ever. America is special and what the rest of the world finds effective could never work there. Because no one would ever obey the law. That's the way you roll. Cold dead hands ya know. Fuck yeah!
  9. Cute little film. It makes a good point. Rules against guns in public places don't work. Clearly control of the supply of killing machines is necessary.
  10. Rep points are getting to be like candy. Have one back! It's a shame we can't easily get together for a drink. Yourself, Brent, and I!
  11. Joe, it's so inconvenient for people when you spot obvious BS and call it out. Maybe he pays $30 per log hour. Which of course would normally be less than minimum wage in real hours spent at the place of employment.
  12. Well, it's hard to see that they are in favour of the King considering the King is an American "ally". Religion, culture, and politics are all intertwined in this. It's hard to separate them from each other. Bin Laden, (actually a Yemeni) was primarily motivated against the House of Saud. As were most of the hijackers. It now appears that the shooter had friends who likely knew what he was going to do and recorded it. It will be very interesting to see how their prosecutions proceed. https://www.mprnews.org/story/2019/12/07/official-florida-base-shooter-watched-massshooting-videos-before-attack?fbclid=IwAR1-Bwd4vxzAUYSHcbAy8J7ewNWvctbdjNk8kLNZIajIrY0UFlhx1fHAc3g
  13. I would consider the statement of support for Bin Laden, who was mostly motivated by American meddling and the statement about funding and committing crimes against Muslims to be condemnations of American policy. Not religious in nature.
  14. FWIW this is part of an NYT story about possible motives The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activity, cited a Twitter account with a name matching the gunman that had posted a “will” calling the United States a “nation of evil” and criticizing its support for Israel. SITE said the account had also quoted Osama bin Laden, the former Qaeda leader, and was critical of United States foreign policy. “I’m not against you for just being American,” the posts said. “I don’t hate you because your freedoms, I hate you because every day you supporting, funding and committing crimes not only against Muslims but also humanity.” The account could not be independently verified, and law enforcement officials did not confirm that it was connected to the gunman.
  15. It isn't Rob, but a jury was convinced anyway. Juries sometimes do outrageous things. This may be one of those times.
  16. A large number of Saudis hate the west in general and America in particular. It isn't really a religious thing. It's the way the west has meddled in their affairs and supports the dictators who control them over the last century or so. I would imagine that if the tables were turned and America was governed by a King who stayed in power with support from the middle east there would be no shortage of American terrorists in the underground.
  17. It doesn't set a legal precedent. The article is skimpy on details, but it does say that a jury acquitted him. That sounds to me like a good lawyer convinced the jury to refuse to convict. Sometimes juries do that, even though it is not really right. I'd like to know what the judges instructions to them were.
  18. Wattsup with the silly talk about exploding heads? Why do so many outraged right wingers feel the need to use mocking language. And more to the point, why do they need to repeat the same tired insults of the day until they wear them out and move on? It's so tribal.
  19. 16 years is an eye blink. That's one of the problems we must deal with. The major effects of warming are down the line and easy for people to ignore in the present. You are correct about one thing, it is not an existential threat. Our main existential threat is large scale thermonuclear war. Just because the human race will almost certainly cope with a warmer climate does not mean it is wise to just continue experimenting with global warming in order to find out how bad it may or may not be. That would be foolish and in keeping with being passengers and crew on a ship of fools. We can do better without sacrificing our standard of living, and we will.
  20. In politics it is always okay to use the press as a weapon. It is the essence of politics. How well you can do it is a huge part of success in politics. For example, Trump is a master at it.
  21. The "predicted calamity" is actually a series of effects, some unknown, some more sure that will happen over the next decades. In the meantime glaciers are melting, seas are rising, and oceans are warming. These predicted and observable measurable effects are and will continue. No matter how shrill you get in denying the facts.
  22. I doubt it. I'm pretty sure China would have always preferred a reliable supplier instead of the US. An overland pipeline is always going to be more economical than LNG ocean shipping. That's why Russia also supplies Western Europe.
  23. Compared to the present day R party, yes he was.
  24. I assumed you were just finding another way of slamming any media outlet that is not sufficiently conservative.
  25. Canada is in a major political and regional battle over the new carbon tax. We're as divided as America, but our national government is far out in front of yours. But of course a lot of it is ineffective show. California is and will remain a major economic powerhouse with an outsized influence in America. Until the big one and the 500 year tsunami hits I guess.
