I can't explain very well how it works, but what it is is as PB said...the ratio of weight suspended under the canopy. For example, a skydiver weighs 150. Add 20 pounds of gear (or "kit"), (which includes everything you wear in the sky), and you have an "exit" weight. 150+20=170. If you jump a 170 canopy, you will then load it at 1:1. If you jump a 190, you will then load it at (can't find the calculator...) something like .09:1. If you jump a 150, you will then load it at something like 1.2:1 *Keep in mind my numbers are rough...use the calculator). The lighter the load, the more gently you will come in on a straight approach landing. It is commonly thought that starting low (1:1 or less) is the best way to make sure you don't break legs or backs, or not die because you did something stupid (and we all do "stupids"...the key is walking away from it having learned...not going to the hospital to learn a whole new vocabulary and experiment with the best pain reducing drugs...). Keep it lightly loaded, and you can progress really well with the proper coaching. Good luck! And remember there's no rush towards a small canopy, and that the sky will wait for you to be ready for it, but is unmerciful if you're playing outside your personal envelope. I totally understand what you meant Jim. Totally. Which is a flaw in the proposals. What would work with someone in Deland may not work with someone in Denver. If there is no understanding or education but simply a restriction, then the person in question may encounter some serious issues...and not know what to do. And yes, shit happens, despite regulations. Education provides a good response, and education with experience provides even better ones... A genuine concern of mine is that most people will not, for whatever reason, seek out a canopy control class, or get mentoring from those more experienced. With w/l BSRs in place, the person may be further lulled into a false sense of security by thinking "well, this is a "safe" canopy, I'll just wait until later to get formal education, when I'm ready to swoop... That indeed would be important factors to get. In my original report, I "sanitized" it - deliberately leaving out the DZ information. Why? Because the argument is about W/L, not what would be good at Denver for a 60 jump wonder as opposed to Otay with a 101 jump wonder. That sort of restriction would increase the unwieldy-ness (is that even a word??) which is already there in the proposals, and would strengthen the fight the DZO's may mount in being against this - if there are any. I honestly think that there needs to be more complete reporting in simply the W/L aspect before anyone can announce, with anything resembling authority, that X means Y, and A is not equal to B. There simply isn't enough data to demonstrate what people are saying is happening. But, Bill...that comment flies directly into the face of everything you've said in the last few weeks about "safe" W/L, your BSR proposal, etc. I don't want to poke at you, Bill, but according to you in many different places, in your opinion and based on the way you've read the stats, that wing loading is dangerous. How can you say one, and in the next post, totally opposite positioning? I don't understand... I just wanted to point that out to you. CJK, what I would suggest is realize that just because you stood it up doesn't mean it was "good" (I stand up more than 1/2 of mine, and it's not "good" - there's always about 80 million things I've done wrong which need to be corrected...) If there is not a canopy control school, then find someone you have a serious rapport with, someone who will teach you the basics all over again. Do a bunch of high alti Hop and Pops, and really really really work flat, braked, and flare turns. Run scenarios through your head, and determine what you will do...for instance, you and a brand new jumper are at 75 feet up, both on final, one of you has screwed up, and you are facing each other. What will you do? How long will it take to a)decide and b)perform? How many feet will it eat to do a flat turn? A braked turn? Further, go to the Performance Designs website, and read everything there about canopy control. And then read it again, and again, and again.Performance Designs Education page And be safe. Get the education, find someone you know and trust, and let them know you want to learn. Buy them a few j/t, or some beer...and get the isntruction from someone who knows more than you about it.
