Heard this on the BBC World Service earlier, and I'm sure people will find it interesting. S/Sgt Bellavia describes his experiences, in sometimes very graphic and disturbing terms, of fighting in Fallujah. He talks of the psychological/physical/spiritual toll of battle, the allure of combat, and the experience of killing (sometimes at extreme close quarters). http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/interview/ Right-click and 'save target as' on the 'download episode' link. It'll expire in a week, just so you know.

[Sound of gears grinding] I've always been a fan of World at War myself.

Well, apparently Burma is quite rich in natural gas (hmm, just like Iran...) but it would seem that doesn't count...

What are the Differences Between McCarthyism and Political Correctness?
DZJ replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
I often wonder what a Parliamentary Committee on Un-English activites would investigate. Not using the correct fork for the fish course? Shooting grouse out-of-season? We wouldn't waste Parliamentary time on such outrages - off to the Tower with them! -

Been following events in Burma with interest the last few days. If you've not heard: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7015212.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7010202.stm A large part of me cheers and urges the people of Burma to be brave, to challenge their despotic and thuggish junta, and win for themselves the rights and freedoms of other nations. But another part of me sees neighbouring China, with its authoritarianism and vested interest in stability, and thinks that things may not change after all...

England - Should girls with implants be allowed on Page 3?

Oh, Speakers' Corner - don't ever change! -
Whatever he does do, I have it on good authority that he doesn't play dice with the universe...

I expect someone would start a pointless thread about it, somewhere on the internet.

Hehe, just what I was thinking!
-
If you've heard about it, I daresay the authorities have too.

Hooray for global warming!

Interested to hear how you made that judgement. Were you on the scene? The story in The Sun gave more details, more and better photos, and a diagram. Simple. The Sun beat the BBC on this story. While you may be trying to cast discredit upon The Sun, you haven't shown anything from their story that doesn't jive with what any other news story is saying. Just because The Sun has a reputation for some sensationalism, doesn't mean that every story they print is false. Woah there, I didn't say anything about The Sun. Your original post implied that The Sun's story was more accurate, and I don't see that that's the case. Presentation and tone differs, but they both cover the facts. And to be fair to the BBC, they had the story first - check the dates on http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/6992936.stm to http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007420857,00.html

Ultimately, yes. He broke, he bought it. The extent to which it would be Hillary's fault would depend on the circumstances in which she decided to withdraw, and what she did up to that point, but ultimate responsibility falls on the man responsible for starting the damn thing in the first place.

This is a bit old (April this year), but came across it again on YouTube and thought it might entertain a few of you (it's only 2minutes long): Mitch Benn sings 'Happy Birthday War' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8FNWB6hcKQ&NR=1

Are things chilling between east and west to start a cold war?
DZJ replied to Armour666's topic in Speakers Corner
Given that Putin makes lots of domestic political capital from gestures like this, I'd say it's just sabre rattling. I'm sure the pilots on both sides realise that too - this isn't much different from the submarine shadow-boxing that used to go on all the time. -
Speaking of Waterloo, I hear the high-speed service from Prussia somehow always arrives late...

Yes,, if that is what is take to stablize that portion of the world, YES So you consider US troops to be a stabilising force in the Middle East?
-
Would you be happy to see substantial numbers (as they would have to be) of US troops in Iraq for decades?

While this guy would appear to richly deserve the death penalty, that doesn't change my objection to capital punishment. The evidence in this case seems clear-cut, but when it is not, justice systems that allow the death penalty essentially take a massive gamble with the chance that the condemned may later be proved innocent as has happened many times. To my mind a justice system that allows such a possibility cannot be considered just. For what it's worth, I hope this man accepts his fate and spares the family the agony of the appeals process.

Yeah, I noticed - literally the same minute (listening to the 10 o'clock news?). I imagine the moderators would probably have merged/deleted the threads in due course anyway.

From the BBC: Full story at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6962071.stm Without apportioning blame, or speculating about the reasons for this tragedy, or losing sight of the fact that in war shit happens, I would nonetheless hope that in this case, US authorities will be more cooperative than they were in the case of the inquest into the death of L/Cpl Matty Hull.
