U.K schools to send letters home to parents of obese kids!!
DZJ replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not sure how much good will be done by sending Mr and Mrs Chubbybutttocks a letter telling them their darling is a wobbling little bloater, but given how many schools send constant streams of pointless 'newsletters', I suppose this might be a worthwhile exercise. -
I'm trying to leave you alone, but with your ostentatious must-have-the-last-wordery, I'm finding it quite impossible!
-
I imagine it says something about Speakers' Corner that facetiousness on such matters (guns, killing, violence in general etc) is not always readily apparent..... As for 'milquetoast' (a great word, btw, which I'd not come across before, and which I'll have to use in future) well, you're mistaken.

Following allegations of sexual misconduct? (And if the article's figure of 3,000,000 teachers is correct, that number doesn't strike me as particularly high, especially over 5 years. The article as a whole reeks of sensationalism as far as I can see) Having friends who teach, and hearing stories of people who've lost jobs as a result of giving a crying child a hug, or a congratulatory pat on the back, I wonder what the definition of abuse is.

Rather than add to the somewhat distasteful bloodthirstiness of this thread so far, I'm going to say instead that these two folks should be rewarded for their restraint and decency. I'm sure they will be a fine example to their three children.

I do love it when history meets politics. Would it be acceptable for such a declaration (or a similar one) to be used as a pawn by the right? [EDIT] For what it's worth, I agree with Kallend. A US declaration would not cause anything that the Turks weren't planning on doing anyway. To me this whole suggestion smacks of a certain prejudice - the implication is that the Turks are some wild irrational people who might spontaneously fly off into a rage and invade their neighbours on the basis of some unpalateable home truths uttered half a world away... (...which is obviously worse than the US/UK invading faraway countries in a cold and calculating manner....)

What a game! Trust England to make us wait for the last five minutes!

This bit strikes me as sufficiently dishonest to be called a lie: From http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html

Isn't that the client's prerogative?

I'm amazed no-one has said Terminator, Predator, Batman or Full Metal Jacket.

Have to say I'm very disappointed to see Fiji lose. They played with such spirit that I think they really deserved to win - and my god the semis would have been interesting with all three of the big southern teams out of the running.

I sometimes wonder if there's any real US 'policy' towards the Middle East at all, or if it just a matter of smashing up the entire region with a sledgehammer(with the notable exception of Israel).
-
Maybe, but I'd imagine that fixed dates would have similar effects, like legislation being rushed through or delayed at some points in the cycle, or other pieces of legislation being timed for tactical effect. Not sure it would make an awful lot of difference.

We are going from reading our genetic code to the ability to write it," Venter told The Guardian. "That gives us the hypothetical ability to do things never contemplated before," he said. Now that's interesting.

Election dates aren't necessarily set. They're normally every four or five years but the government of the day can call an election whenever it wants. In that case the PM requests a dissolution of Parliament from the Queen, there follows a set period of campaigning (17 days I think), an election is held and the leader of the largest party is invited by the Queen to form a government.

It's also chock full of all sorts of other facts: Emphasis added. Are firearms murders rare in the US? Also:
-
No, because (repeating myself for the third time here) their figures are sourced from the regime itself and are unverified. Would you call the junta a credible source?
-
You said Britain was the biggest investor in Burma, and you were wrong. You said Britain was the biggest western investor in Burma, and you were wrong again. Forgive me for having an interest in facts. And like I said, those numbers are unverified and sourced from the regime itself. Don't quite see where your obsession with semantics comes from - so far I've been dealing in facts. And yet British investment in Burma is less than half a million pounds a year...
-
Ok if you want to be a cry baby and play semantics I will reword it a couple of times Britain are the #1 western trading partner OR Britain are a close second to China and funnel a lot of money directly to the Burmese Junta Hilarious. You come out with a statement that is demonstrably false and when called on it you bluff about semantics. And anyway, your claims still don't stand up. The claim that Britain is second behind China is based on dubious, non-independently verified figures that come from the Burmese regime. Further, Britain's investment is less significant than that of the US's Chevron, or France's Total. British investment in Burma is negligible (sub £500k) according to the FCO.

And from the same fine publication: Supernanny kids set fire to own house after visit from TV expert http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=485195&in_page_id=177

The BBC can probably explain better than I can: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7013943.stm

Erm, BULLSHIT. Burma's biggest trading partners are its neighbours, principally China. Do try and get your facts straight.
